Abdullah Al-Jumaili, a Muslim in Ireland Who’s Kissed the Blarney Stone

I’d like to have some cheerful news from the Old Sod to report, something about the Book of Kells at Trinity College becoming the centerpiece of a son-et-lumiere exhibition in dear dirty Dublin, about a breakfast buffet that now includes verulamium-cum-plover-eggs sunnyside up at the Gresham Hotel, about the Liffey finally being cleaned up enough for Dubliners to take the plunge, or about the man from County Galway — a distant relative, on my mother’s side, of Humphrey Chimpden Earwicker — who has kindly sent me a corrected version of my list of typographical errors in Finnegans Wake. But I’m afraid the main news is all about Muslims, and how well some Irish are adjusting to their presence, convincing themselves in coué-fashion that things are for the best in this best of all possible worlds. A former GAA [Gaelic Athletic Association] Ambassador has thanked an Irish government minister for expressing support for the Irish Muslim community after protests surrounding an Eid al-Adha event at Croke Park on Saturday.

Abdullah Al Jumaili initially posted on social media about his upset at “Protests from individuals claiming that Muslims don’t belong there, that Croke Park is only for one faith, one background, one type of Irishness.“Let me say this clearly: That is not the Ireland we are building.

As someone who has worked tirelessly in the GAA to champion inclusion, dual identity and the celebration of Irish Muslim heritage, I found the rhetoric this year deeply offensive and simply wrong.”

Why do so many people always “work tirelessly”? Is there really no other adverb that will fit with the verb “to work”? How about we all agree to just drop it, and sans adverb write “as someone who has worked in the GAA….” There, that wasn’t so hard, was it?

In response to that, the Irish Minister of Finance, Paschal Donohoe messaged Mr Al Jumaili, saying:

I am pained to read of protests at your moments of religious celebration and worship.

The Irish Muslim community is very important to our country and I hope you know that this is felt by the overwhelming majority of your fellow Irish men and women. I am sorry for any upset that was caused.

Thank you for the work you do in making the case for diversity as a source of strength and pride.

Mr Al Jumaili, who is known as Abood, said he was “deeply moved” by those words from the Fine Gael TD for Dublin Central, commenting:

His words were clear, kind and powerful.. I want to express my sincere gratitude to the Minister for taking the time to reach out.

Abdullah a/k/a Amood Al-Jumaili expresses his “sincere gratitude” to Paschal Donohoe. And why not? Donohoe’s a useful idiot for the Muslims in Ireland, a man who clearly has no idea what is contained in the Qur’an and hadith. Instead, he’s content to utter pieties and platitudes. The Irish finance minister is quite convinced that Diversity is A Source of Strength and Pride, and anyone who dares to question the sheer wonderfulness of the Muslim presence in Ireland can only be a beyond-the-pale bigot.

Al-Jumaili went on to hail Donohoe’s leadership abilities: “Leadership like this sends a strong signal, especially to young Irish Muslims – that they are valued, seen and supported.” He also asserts that “there is no contradiction in being Irish and being Muslim. We are proud of both. We live it daily. We contribute, we support, we build, we serve. And we will continue to do so. To those who feel excluded by this duality, I invite you not to fear it, but to understand it. To walk beside us, not against us.”

But Islam is based on a “duality,” a world that is divided between Muslims and Unbelievers, and it is the duty of Muslims to spread Islam everywhere, so that the entire world becomes part of Dar al-Islam.

What sentimental mush from Abdullah Al-Jumaili. Those who oppose the holding of a Muslim religious celebration in a public park must be, according to Al-Jumaili, people who “seek to divide and provoke — people who have added little to the fabric of this country.” My, my. He’s already decided that anyone who has doubts about the Muslims in their midst must be of no worth. Cast them, and not the wonderful Muslims they vilify, into the outer darkness.

How do the Muslims in Ireland “contribute, support, build, and serve” people who are not Muslims, and whom they have been taught are “the most vile of created beings”? What exactly have they done to contribute to the Irish economy, to its social fabric, to society, to its art, literature, music? How many Muslim migrants, one would like to know, are battening on every benefit the Irish welfare state provides? How many Muslims in Ireland have committed crimes of property, or violent crimes? Why is it, one wonders, do Muslims constitute 2% of the population in Ireland, but are at least 7% of the prison population?

And what are the “shared dreams” in the “Ireland of today” to which Abdullah Al-Jumaili refers? Isn’t the dream of all Muslims to create a world where “Islam dominates and is not to be dominated”? How can that be a “dream shared” by non-Muslims?

The Irish people who objected to the Eid al-Adha celebration being held at Croke Park are not bigots, as Abdullah al-Jumaili wants everyone to believe. They are something much more dangerous, from his point of view. They are informed.
