British Defense Secretary David Lammy announced while addressing Parliament on May 19 that in order to punish Israel for its new offensive in Gaza, he would suspend talks on a free trade agreement. Jake Wallis Simons takes a whack both at Lammy, and at those MPs who repeated claims first made by a UN official about “14,000 babies in Gaza,” who, if aid were not immediately provided, he claimed “could die within 48 hours,” here: “Palestinian activists can finally see their ‘intifada’ in action,” by Jake Wallis Simons, Telegraph, May 22, 2025:
During the notorious parliamentary debate on Israel this week, in which the foreign secretary announced that he was suspending trade talks with the sole democracy in the Middle East, the false claim that “14,000 babies could be dead in the next 48 hours” was repeated no fewer than 13 times, according to the record in Hansard.
The following day, a man shot dead two Israeli diplomats outside a Jewish Museum in Washington DC while allegedly crying “free Palestine.”…
These conspiracy theories have been commonplace ever since the Cold War, when Soviet propagandists invented them and spread them around the world, where they were received with some glee by the Muslim world and the Western Left.
Foremost, of course, is the false claim that Israel is committing “genocide” in Gaza, despite the fact that if it had wished to do so, it could have obliterated the entire Strip from the air in about half-an-hour without risking the life of a single soldier.
There are many others, however: apartheid, settler colonialism, ethnic cleansing, white supremacy, Nazism. To these we may add false claims specific to Israel’s operations in Gaza. The IDF bombs hospitals for fun. Shoots civilians for fun. Kills infants for fun, just like the Jews have done since 1144 in Norwich….
In 1144 Jews in Norwich, England were accused of killing a 12-year-old Christian boy, William — the first of the “blood libel” cases — and a mass killing of Jews followed.
So it was that after a United Nations humanitarian chief [Tom Fletcher] made the claim on Radio 4’s Today, it travelled halfway round the world in a matter of minutes.
Simons no doubt had in the back of his mind Mark Twain’s remark that “a lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes.”
Now anyone of sense should have known that Tom Fletcher’s claim about those “14,000 babies in Gaza who could die within 48 hours” was, in fact, absurd. The original claim that Fletcher misunderstood, or with malice aforethought deliberately misstated, was that if sufficient aid to Gaza were not forthcoming, up to 14,000 babies could suffer malnutrition “in the next year.” Not death, but malnutrition. Not in 48 hours, but over the course of a year. Quite a difference. Will David Lammy clearly state this in his next appearance in Parliament? Will the MPs who repeated Fletcher’s claim at least 13 times during a parliamentary debate now make a full apology to the government of Israel for such a dangerous canard? When will those denouncing Israel for committing “genocide” make the connection between their wild charges and the murders of two young Israeli diplomats in Washington by a moral cretin screaming “free free Palestine”?

Every attack on Israel is a another reason to forcefully create its own safe space, beginning with Iran. The US would have little choice but to back them and demands for a Palestine state would get little action. There is a definite attitude by US neocons for aggression towards Iran.
The threats to Israel are existential and growing. A response, first to Iran, seems inevitable.
If other nations like Turkey want to get involved perhaps the modernization and de-Islamization of a new Mustafa Ataturk will return when it is over.
