What Israel Has Done for the U.S. Military

Israel receives $3.8 billion in annual military aid from the US government. Almost all of it is spent on American weapons. This aid is not a one-way street. Israel has done more to improve existing American weaponry, and to share with the American military the IDF’s latest technological innovations, than all of the NATO countries combined. Professor John Spencer has provided a description of those Israeli advances that are now benefiting American servicemen here: “How Israeli Military Technology Continues to Improve the US Military,” by John Spencer and Liam Collins, INSS, April 27, 2025:

After the 1973 Yom Kippur War, the US Department of Defense undertook an extensive evaluation of the conflict, commissioning no fewer than 37 separate studies, including a still-classified seven-volume report on weapon systems. American military personnel walked the battlefields alongside Israeli commanders who had fought there, analyzing the strategies and technologies that enabled Israel to prevail against overwhelming odds. The lessons drawn from Israel’s battlefield successes would profoundly shape US military doctrine, directly influencing the development of AirLand Battle doctrine and the “Big Five” weapon systems—Apache helicopters, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, Patriot missile systems, Abrams tanks, and Black Hawk helicopters. These advancements, combined with new operational approaches emphasizing speed, firepower, and joint-force coordination, would redefine modern warfare.

Since that study, the US military’s enduring engagement with Israeli defense innovations continues to influence the US military’s combat strategies and systems. From tank protection systems to artificial intelligence-powered warfare solutions, Israeli defense firms and research institutions have consistently delivered cutting-edge innovations that have found their way into the American military. Many of these technologies were born out of Israel’s unique security challenges and its need for rapid innovation in urban and asymmetric warfare. The US military has adopted many of Israel’s systems and integrated them into combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and various counterterrorism operations worldwide.

The Israeli Emergency Bandage: A Battlefield Lifesaver

While Israeli innovations have shaped military doctrine and force structures, they have also had a direct impact on individual warfighters, as seen in battlefield medical advancements. The Emergency Bandage—a simple yet highly effective hemorrhage control dressing developed by an Israeli military medic—has saved countless American lives. First introduced in the 1990s, the bandage features a built-in pressure applicator that allows soldiers to treat severe wounds with one hand.

The US military adopted the Emergency Bandage in the early 2000s, particularly as it faced increasing casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan due to IEDs and small arms fire. It is now standard issue in the individual first aid kits of American soldiers, special operations forces, and first responders.

Armored Bulldozers: A Critical Urban Warfare Tool

The Israeli military’s adaptation of the D9 bulldozer into a heavily armored combat bulldozer offered a battlefield-tested model that directly influenced American operations in Iraq. In 2003, the US military procured 14 Israeli-armored D9s, developed by Israel’s military engineering corps, for use in combat zones like Iraq. While it remains uncertain where these specific units were deployed in Iraq, their acquisition illustrates the growing recognition of Israeli expertise in modifying heavy equipment for urban warfare. Some reports indicate that armored D9s were used in the Second Battle of Fallujah, possibly equipped with Israeli-designed armor kits that enabled US forces to breach barricades, demolish fortified positions, and reduce the risk to dismounted troops. In Israeli service, the D9 has been heavily employed in Gaza, where it has been used to clear booby-trapped buildings, uncover tunnel shafts, and breach barricades under fire—often while under threat from IEDs and anti-tank missiles. To further protect operators and sustain the platform’s urban utility, Israel developed a remote-controlled version of the bulldozer. This unmanned variant allows forces to conduct critical combat engineering tasks in high-risk zones without exposing soldiers to direct fire, demonstrating how the D9 continues to evolve as a life-saving tool on the modern battlefield….

Did you understand all of that technical stuff? No, I didn’t either. But I get the idea: Israel is the technological gift that keeps on giving. Those $3.8 billion in American aid given each year to Israel is the best possible investment in our own security. The next time someone complains on social media that “we spend too much on Israel” refer them to — no, quote in detail — Professor Spencer’s exhaustive list of Israeli military innovations. Israel is our not-so-secret weapon. China doesn’t have it, Russia doesn’t have it. But we do.

    Israel Attack on USS Liberty
    On June 8, 1967, during the Six-Day War, Israeli forces attacked the USS Liberty, a U.S. Navy spy ship operating in international waters off the Sinai Peninsula. The attack involved Israeli air and naval units, resulting in the deaths of 34 American sailors and injuries to 171 others. Israel later apologized, claiming that the attack was a tragic mistake due to misidentification of the ship as an Egyptian vessel. However, some survivors and former U.S. officials dispute this, suggesting that the attack was deliberate, possibly to conceal Israel’s pending seizure of Syria’s Golan Heights, which occurred the next day.

    • The canard about a “deliberate attack” on the U.S.S. Liberty by the Israelis, who supposedly didn’t want the intelligence ship to learn about Israel’s planned attack on Syria’s Golan, never dies no matter how much commonsensical information, compiled by investigators of the US Military, who also have tapes of the Israeli pilots’ communications before, during, and after their attack, is provided that prove the opposite. Israel had in fact notified the American government about its plans to attack the Golan some eight hours before the mistaken attack on the Liberty.

      Another book on the incident, the most comprehensive to date, is Jay Cristol’s “the Liberty Incident.”

      Googling will turn up both the canard and its rebuttal –many examples of both . Ah hour or two of reading should disabuse the fair-minded of any doubt that it was a tragic accident.

      • Mike turned an article about how important Israel is to our own military, into a discussion of the Liberty incident from 58 years ago. It’s indisputable that Israel is an asset to us, not a liability as people like Mike would have us believe, so he needed to change the subject since he can’t rebut the article’s points.     • You forgot to claim that the Jews are not Hebrews, but Khazar settlers in Palestine. Although Turkey, which loves Turkic people worldwide, including Khazars, doesn’t seem to think so

      • Every reputable DNA investigation has found (1) Jews originated in the Levant, and have Levantine DNA and (2) are not of Khazar descent, the latter complicated by the fact that the Khazars themselves were conquered by the Kievan Rus and forced to convert to Christianity, then assimilated into Slav society. There is no Khazar DNA on record anywhere to date.

    • This has been debunked repeatedly; the cockpit tapes were released, making it clear it was a mistake. Multiple investigations by both nations and accompanying hearings, including Congressional, have found it to be a friendly fire incident. You left out that the Liberty was not supposed to be there, had been recalled, and no one knew she was in the area. She was cruising close to where an Egyptian ship had been the day before, firing on Israeli troops in the Sinai. THAT is why Israel fired on her until they discovered she was American.

Although I could write many words in praise of my old friend, Patriarch Laham, this article concentrates on the latter two as much to bear witness by standing in solidarity with them as for any other more practical or immediate reason.

    Though Mufti Hassoun was largely a ceremonial meet and greet guy, along with every other moderate Sunni cleric of influence, he was a marked man from the first days of the conflict. When I brought him to Ireland, RTÉ, the Irish government’s state controlled TV outlet, had Dr Ali Selim of the Muslim Brotherhood deliberately misinterpret his words, thereby putting the Mufti’s life, and my own, in danger from Dublin’s standing army of imported ISIS fanatics. Ivana Bacik, the head of Ireland’s far right Labour Party, continued Selim’s sectarian attacks in the Irish Parliament, after which RTÉ gave her a primetime platform where she again made a fool of herself. The only thing these MI6 running dogs can do to the likes of Mufti Hassoun is to blackball him or, as their Muslim Brotherhood comrades are currently doing in Damascus, mercilessly torture the septuagarian until he falls into a coma.
    Although Mother Agnes Mariam, another septuagenarian, is not yet in a coma, that is how Syria’s new rulers would like her and all similar nuns to be. Mother Agnes Mariam first rose to prominence because she helped to debunk the false allegations Jolani’s head hacking rebels made about the Syrian Arab Army using chemical gas attacks in East Ghouta, which NATO, resorting to their usual playbook, was using as a pretext to bomb Syria to smithereens.
    Although a detailed debunking of the East Ghouta chemical attack may be found, inter alia, here, a twitter search for Mother Agnes Mariam quickly reveals what a thorn in the side she was and still is for Syria’s new rulers and why, in mafia parlance, she has to go. Mother Agnes currently faces two charges, the first of which is that she lied about those chemical attacks and the second of which is that she advocated for Israel to invade Syria.
    The second charge is totally absurd because, not only is Israel in full control of southern Syria and are squabbling with Turkey as regards which of them will control the T4 air base in central Syria, but Syria’s new rulers have long collaborated with the Israelis Mother Agnes Mariam is now accused of working with. And, whatever the rights and wrongs of the Muslim Brotherhood collaborating with Israel, Mother Agnes has the extenuating circumstance that she is trying to protect Christian, Alawite and Druze lives by affording them some kind of protection, however imperfect or self-defeating her efforts may be.
    Her persecutors have no such excuse. Not only had HTS terror boss Jolani a $10 million US bounty on his head but there is overwhelming evidence their massacres of Alawites, Christians and Druze continue, even as you read this article.
    Altough her many critics, who argue that Mother Agnes should never have involved herself in what they term politics, may have a point, circumstances show them to be hypocrites at best and charlatans at worst. The thirteen nuns and three maids kidnapped by Jolani’s crew from Maaloua had no political involvement and yet they had to suffer the gravest of indignities for months on end. Franciscan priest Fr Francois Murad had no political involvement and yet Jolani’s finest beheaded him in Ghassaniya. Ditto Armenian Catholic priest Fr Hovsep Bedoyen, Dutch Jesuit priest Frans van der Lugt and so many saintly Assyrian and Greek Orthodox priests, bishops and archbishops I would be here until the Day of Judgement if I were to list them all.
    Although Italian Jesuit priest Fr Paol Dall’Oglio did throw his lot in with Jolani’s crew, they thanked him by slitting his throat and throwing his body into a Raqqa lime pit for his troubles, thereby posing some pertinent practical and moral questions not only for all of Syria’s remaining nuns, priests and other religious leaders but for each and every one of us as well.
    If Mother Agnes Mariam is convicted of raising, more than a decade ago remember, the plight of hundreds of Alawite children who were abducted and organ harvested by Jolani’s lot then even in her isolation, she should be quietly proud that she is following in the footsteps of St Paul, the great Syrian Apostle, who trod the same Golgotha twenty centuries earlier, and of Jesus Himself, Who Mark 15:34 tells us, likewise felt abandoned.
    For me, the die is cast, my Rubicon is crossed and, though I am in this, on the side of the Syrian people, the Grand Mufti and Mother Agnes Mariam included, until the bitter end, I have the consolation that brave Syrians, of all denominations and none, are helping my small efforts in ways big and small, and that fortifies me
    But, as with Graham Greene’s The Power and the Glory, we must all help our own champions in every way, big or small, that we can so that neither they nor we throw in the towel, which would be the ultimate betrayal not only of Mufti Hassoun and Mother Agnes Mariam but of the Syrian people and their thousands of years of standing on the right side of St Paul, St Thecla, of the nuns of Maaloula and Saidnaya, of the Armenians in their gravest hour of need and of all that is good, holy, brave and right. Although I am asking elsewhere for readers to give directly to a number of Irish, British and French-based groups, donations can also be sent here, where I will again pass them on to brave, apolitical nuns in Damascus who, like the great Syrian apostle, St Paul, before them, have fought the good fight, finished the race and, above all, kept the faith in the most trying and difficult of circumstances.

    Well, considering the US has gone 1 for 3 since that time (and that’s being generous), I conclude we’ve learned all the wrong lessons.

    • That’s because the higher-ups in Washington would not let their generals win the wars. Secretariat never would have set a world record, let alone winnthe Belmont Stakes or any of his other races if the jockey keeps pulling back on the reins during the race.

  6. All long past and refuted distractions aside, Israel is currently our Western Democratic ally in the war being waged by Islam against the United States and the West.

    The U.S. needs to recognize that:
    Islam is a form of government that includes a religion. Islam is the State. There is no separation of mosque and State. Therefore, Islam is incompatible with the U.S. Constitution. Islam should not be allowed into the U.S. on that basis.

    Israel’s need of us may be obvious now, but our need of them will become more and more evident over time as the Islamic world, the Caliphate, expands into Europe, Asia Minor, Africa etc.

  7. The Israeli ‘proving ground’ of American weapons and the laboratory of military strategy has been priceless. The 1973 war tank battles were vital in understanding tank warfare. The various military strategies and anti terrorism methods that Israel has perfected in war after war against it are of immense value to our military.
