UK: Attorney for man on trial for burning Qur’an says convicting him would bring blasphemy law to the country

Katy Thorne is quite right in saying this, but Britain is already far down the road to accepting and imposing Sharia blasphemy laws. Otherwise, Hamit Coskun would never have been arrested or brought to trial at all.

Note also that Thorne assures the court that Coskun did not “exhort hate” against Muslims. This is important, as Muslims and their leftist allies always charge that any criticism of Islam, jihad violence, or Sharia oppression, no matter how accurate and no matter how restrained, constitutes “hate.” And “hate” is a grave offense in Western societies today. Yet genuinely hateful Islamic preachers who teach the Qur’anic passages about Jews being apes and pigs and that unbelievers are the most vile of created beings will never run afoul of British authorities. Now, why is that?

Convicting a man for burning the Koran would be “tantamount to reintroducing a blasphemy law”, his defence team has told a court.

Hamit Coskun appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday after he allegedly shouted abusive slogans about Islam while burning the holy book outside the Turkish consulate in Knightsbridge, London, on 13 February.

The 50-year-old denies a religiously aggravated public order offence of using disorderly behaviour and an alternative charge of using disorderly behaviour “within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress”.

Katy Thorne, defending, said at his trial that the prosecution pursuing the case against Coskun was “seeking to introduce a law unknown to this land, namely blasphemy in relation to Islam”.

Blasphemy laws were abolished in England and Wales in 2008, with Scotland following suit in 2021.

Ms Thorne told the court that burning the Koran “cannot be a criminal offence”.

“To render such an act a criminal offence is tantamount to reintroducing a blasphemy law in relation to Islam, rendering the Koran a specially protected object in the UK, where a flag or another book would not be, and rendering trenchant or offensive criticism of Islam a criminal offence, is also akin to reinstating an offence of blasphemy,” she said in her written argument.

“People must be free to exercise their religious or non-religious beliefs and to manifest those beliefs in whatever non-violent way they choose, and any curtailing by the state of that freedom must be absolutely necessary in a democratic society.”

She said Coskun “did not exhort hate” to those following Islam, but protested “outside the Turkish Consulate, a political institution, which provided further evidence he was not seeking to persuade others to dislike Islam, but express his personal criticism of Turkey and its stance on Islam”.

Ms Thorne added: “His protest was specifically political and thus… requires the highest protection of freedom of speech.”…

  1. A free person has the right to burn any book they want so long as it’s their owned book and not someone else’s book.

    • Totally agree. The other question is would he be on trial for burning any other book, say a bible or Canadian history book? If not why is he on trial for burning his own copy of the Quran?

      Now if you are going to call it a hate crime then you need to close down all the mosque that spew hate and violence against Canadian citizens who are not islamic followers. Sorry Islam and Liberals you really can’t have it both ways.

  3. This is a test case to see how far the authorities will go to protect the evil that is islime. If….perhaps *when*…he is convicted, no other adversary of the evil will go unpunished.

Muslim seek legal protection from British Courts (1) to help combat and silence criticism of Islam, (2) to help expand Islam’s Acceptance in a society, and (3) to help conceal Islam’s funding, teaching, and promotion of Muslim Terrorist Organizations(MTO), terrorism, discrimination, assassinations, and violence against Non-Muslims. Islam is a Terrorist-Criminal Enterprise as well as an Antichrist Ideology and violates US Laws, and Muslims are Allah’s terrorists against Non-Muslims(Quran 60:4; 9:5, 29, 111 and more).

    Once freedom of speech and expression is extinguished by the NON-MUSLIM STATE, opposition to Islam is not likely successful in Court. In Islamic Law and in the Quran, Islam’s Community Obligation(Legal Standard) – “Command the Right and Forbid the Wrong” – from Quran 3:104 and from Muslim Law Manual: “Reliance of the Traveler… q1.0 and more”, teaches Muslims to subjugate Non-Muslims via Muslim wars and to control the Non-Muslims under Islamic Law.

    • While I agree with the focus and intent of your post:

      No U.S. law prohibits one from BELIEVING in any religion, or none.

      Indeed, unlike Afghanistan for example, it is a right!

      It is the PRACTICE of those aspects of religious laws that do violate U.S. law at issue.

      While Islam does command the amputation of a thief’s hand, to act that out here DOES violate our Constitution and relevant secular, man-made laws.

      Said practices, and the laws they violate here, must be publicly and factually identified to prevent further attempts to infuse Islamic law into ours.

I just don’t know how they would do it, but I am sure they can think of something if enough people are KILLED, RAPED and their country is going to hell in hand basket.. which it is already since they allowed these monstrous terrorists types in there.           Ugly as it is, Muslims here have the right to believe–per Allah–that the amputation of a human being’s hand is the appropriate punishment for theft.

          The PRACTICE of religious laws that actually do violate that same Constitution and laws is the issue.

  7. Wow.. now that is a real catch 22. I am sure a decent prosecuting attorney can up w/ something than “HE BURNED A BOOK”.. for a crime. Frankly, I basically agree with the man: the Qu’uran is a fake book,, and Islam is a CULT. So there laws also non compliant with reality (that is Sharia law also is NOT APPLICABLE,, to anything if we going by LOGIC).. so he if HE DID SOMETHING ELSE, now like threaten a specific person.. or even a Mosque.. or burn down a building.. he could be charged for that and I am not sure what the laws in the UK. let’s put it that way. So I wish him LUCK and he gets off scott free.! yep.

    • Burning a book, let’s say a cookbook, to light the fireplace, for example, is emphatically not a crime.

      A book which urges it’s readers/mohamedans to ‘Kill them wherever you find them’ (surah 2: 191) incites ‘believers’ to murder ‘non-believers’. That IS a crime. The true problem therefore is why is this book allowed to be sold to begin with? It should be banned.

      Are we allowed to ban it? Good question. Answer: yes. Cf. article 9, para. 2 of the European Convention of Human Rights:

      ‘Freedom to manifest one’s religion or beliefs shall be subject (…) to such limitations as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society in the interests of public safety, for the protection of public order, health or morals, or for the protection of the rights and freedoms of others.’

      I’m not going to bore you by discussing all the limitations mentioned. Suffice it to argue that inciting to murder is covered by practically every limitation mentioned: public safety, the protection of public order, health or morals, or the protection of the rights and freedoms of others. So why is that book still around? Why are our authorities allowing it?

  12. Normally speaking (at least where I come from), a behaviour can only become punishable by way of formal legislation. If something is not explicitly forbidden (or, better, under threat of punishment, because many crimes aren’t forbidden but carry a certain punishment), it is not an offence. A judge can not himself make something a criminal offence. Only the legislature can. The judge can use extensive interpretation, but he can not do that without a previous law stating that such or so behaviour constitutes an offence.
