Trump Shocks the World — Again

Trump has done it again. That much is clear. He has outmaneuvered and out-thought everyone else, and did what many others assumed to be impossible.

But what exactly has he done?

On Wednesday morning, during his trip to Saudi Arabia, Trump met with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who from 2017 until January of this year, was known as Abu Mohammad al-Julani. Al-Sharaa was the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the “Syrian Liberation Group,” a Sunni jihad group that had been linked to al-Qaeda and was working to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

In January 2025, HTS finally attained its goal. Assad fled to Russia. Al-Julani took control in Damascus and announced that he was establishing a regime that would respect the rights of all Syrians. He insisted that he had broken with al-Qaeda years before, and to signify that he was a new man, he shed his nom de guerre and reverted to his birth name. He trimmed his beard, took off his fatigues, and donned a suit.

Yet almost immediately, al-Sharaa’s attempts to construct a new image for himself foundered upon harsh reality. His forces were involved in mass killings of members of the Alawite sect. Since Bashar Assad was an Alawite, this sect was associated with the old regime. As recently as March 7, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz declared that al-Sharaa was behind it: “Al-Julani took off his galabiya, put on a suit, and presented a moderate facade. Now, he has removed the mask, revealing his true face: a jihadist terrorist from the Al-Qaeda school, committing atrocities against the Alawite civilian population.”

Al-Sharaa, however, condemned the killings and vowed to punish those responsible, even if they were his own men, saying: “Syria is a state of law. The law will take its course on all. We fought to defend the oppressed, and we won’t accept that any blood be shed unjustly, or goes without punishment or accountability, even among those closest to us.”

How since is al-Sharaa? Is he still a jihadist, practicing Muhammad’s dictum, “War is deceit”? Or does he genuinely wish to establish a regime in Syria that will ensure the rights of all people? Donald Trump is giving him a chance to put up or shut up.

Trump made it clear throughout the 2024 presidential campaign: he was determined to end the cycle of endless wars and establish a new era of peace. He repeatedly made it clear that this would involve challenging what the foreign policy establishment has long held to be unquestionable truths, and finding new ways to reach accords with previously hostile entities based on common interests.

  1. For most of us, understanding the “Middle East” is not just complicated, but takes more time than we are likely to want to spend. But without a Robert Spencer, i.e., the Left has a chance of winning the global war. I reposted on Fakebook, and added my own understanding as it stands now after “Trump Shocks the World.” (It’s unlikely that 50% of the people who post on Facebook will ever understand, let alone believe (or care to learn) what President Trump has been up since he was first elected in 2016. Believing that as I do, Trump’s 2nd term as Donald Trump For President may also find the same 50% completely missing the historic balancing act he’s performing with his trip to the Middle East.
    I’ve come to expect hissy-whiny fits from the Leftists here on Fakebook (as someone called it) but the real disappointment came when I realized that Trump and very few others in his administration were the only ones in Washington D.C. who were capable of seeing the big picture, the ultimate prize: Peace. Peace around the world ultimately means Peace in America, and that’s what Trump wants, that’s all that he has wanted since Day One.)

  2. If Julani is sincere, his days are counted, because if he is, he is actually deviating from the orthodox line set forth in sura (what was it again?) 8: 39 and 2: 191, etc., etc.. If so, he’s an apostate and has to be killed. Well, we’ll see, won’t we?

    For the remainder, Dump’s deals will force him to accommodate the barbarians and will thus leave us citizens out in the cold dar al harb.

    Dump is as dangerous a fool as Biden was, I regret to say.

    • Trump is no more a fool than the British subjects who packed up their lives centuries ago and sailed across the Atlantic for what they hoped was a better life, one no longer under the control of the King. I have come to believe, at one month short of seventy-nine, that it is, was and will be the dreams of people like Donald Trump that will not just save humanity but allow it to thrive.

        • So you are as concerned about the Islamists and Shar’ia. We are in agreement there. We have many battles to fight and the Muslim Brotherhood would be a good place to start. But, your point does not distract me from my hope in fighters – like Trump.

          I wonder if the Muslims like Zuhdi Jasser have a chance to reform Islam; I suspect not. But his fight is like the fight between Progressives and Conservatives, sometimes we win and sometimes we lose. The downfall of Europe (a more grand fate than Spain in the 600’s) makes me think we’re outnumbered.

        • Sorry, Quirk, but I love what our President is doing. I have waited nearly forty years for a President who knows how to protect our country and do it within the Law. I was working in export in the 70’s and saw the huge giveaway going on and then the overseas Maoist ruins of the Chinese people. We Americans need to fight back and Trump is the guy to do it.

        • I’m not sure that raising sanctions on a murderous Shari’ah state protects our country–and it certainly does not protect Christians in Syria.

    Our enemies and frienamies play the long game. I am afraid Trump plays the short game here. Looks great for the photo-op. Jihad like rust NEVER STOPS.

    His economic deals with muslims only mean they dump more of their unearned wealth buying America and influence, while we seem to be committing the lives of our children to defend the jihad. It’s not like these muslims create or innovate or contribute anything to our civilization.

    I understand that you support your president (what was it again? Dump, or Trump, I forget) with his Highway Transportation System, I mean his Harmonized Tariff Schedule. At first this shocked me, but upon reflexion, I concluded that he was right where that part is concerned. What is steadily distancing him from me, however, is his use of ‘the deal’. He consistently says he wants deals, not violence. And I am inclined to agree with that, but do remark that it would appear that he’s loosing sight of the opposite end of the deals he’s making and to me that’s very worrisome. And I mean very worrisome. And that’s because through his deals, he’s exposing us to the barbarians, not protecting us from them and that decidedly is not in our interest and that includes US citizens. In the end, his deals will prevent us from criticizing the koran and mohamedanism. So he gets richer (I won’t even touch upon the subject of corruption) and we’re loosing our freedoms. Now, if you ask me, that’s a very bad deal. For us, that is. And that includes you.

    Plus he’s so fickle that he claims that he’s prepared to dump his closest ally/allies and everyone can see that. He’s shouting this all over the world, for everyone to hear, from Putin to Xi Jin Ping to some hoyatoleslam or other in Tehran. ‘And that’s plain stupid’, if you ask me, because by now they know where his weak spot is, witness the plane.

    And as for Dump, or Trump: I think you will have to grant me the argument that a president who publicly uses the words ‘They kiss(ed) my ass’ (which I literally heard him say, on TV, mind you!) is foul mouthed and invites and deserves the use of pejorative adjectives. Plus Dump refers to his apparent willingness to dump his closest allies.

    Of course, murdring the ‘Un-Islamic” like Alawites or Infidels like Christians is not against Shari’ah law. Islam does not consider this kind of slaughter unjust. Al-Sharaa is lying.
