There is no information in the article below about the religion of the kidnapped girls. Latakia is the major Alawite center in Syria and also has a large Christian population. In any case, the kidnappers were intent upon teaching them Islam. The imperative to expand the Islamic community at the expense of the non-Muslim communities is a constant in Islam.
“Two month after being kidnapped | Two girls return to their families in Tartous and their brother remains kidnapped,” Syrian Observatory of Human Rights, May 24, 2025 (thanks to The Religion of Peace):
Tartous province: Two girls who were kidnapped along with their brother on March 23, by unidentified gunmen in Lattakia have returned to their family.
According to information SOHR obtained from sources related to the family, communication was made between the kidnappers and a third party, that took the two girls and returned them to their families.
The two girls returned with noticeable changes in behaviour and temperament, claiming that the kidnappers treated them well and stated that they received Islamic religious teachings.
Meanwhile, their family remains deeply concerned about the fate of their missing brother, fearing he may have been executed.

This is good news. That’s more than can be said about hapless non-muslim girls in Pakistan or Bangladesh

I hope the brother will also be returned; but the family’s fears may come to be reality.
It’s good the girls were returned. Perhaps the family can rehabilitate them.

If they were Christians, they probably wouldn’t be released. My guess, they are Shia muslims.

Not sure: they seem to hate Alawites even more than Christians. After all, the new Syrian regime has kept relations w/ Moscow intact, but snapped all relations w/ Iran
They seem a tad more sensitive to Western criticism of how Christians are being treated, but when it comes to the Alawites, all gloves are off

Their plea underscores the dire situation facing Syria’s Christian community, which has dwindled from around 1.5 million before the start of the civil war in 2011 to approximately 300,000 today.
The capital city of Syria, Damascus, was the place of the Apostle Paul’s conversion and a centre for the early Christian church.
