Islamic tradition records that Muhammad consummated his marriage with (i.e., raped) Aisha when she was nine, and the resultant fact that child marriage and the sexualization of children are taken for granted in wide swaths of the Islamic world.
“The Prophet wrote the (marriage contract) with Aisha while she was six years old and consummated his marriage with her while she was nine years old and she remained with him for nine years (i.e. till his death)” (Bukhari 7.62.88).
Another tradition has Aisha herself recount the scene:
The Prophet engaged me when I was a girl of six (years). We went to Medina and stayed at the home of Bani-al-Harith bin Khazraj. Then I got ill and my hair fell down. Later on my hair grew (again) and my mother, Um Ruman, came to me while I was playing in a swing with some of my girl friends. She called me, and I went to her, not knowing what she wanted to do to me. She caught me by the hand and made me stand at the door of the house. I was breathless then, and when my breathing became all right, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There in the house I saw some Ansari women who said, “Best wishes and Allah’s Blessing and a good luck.” Then she entrusted me to them and they prepared me (for the marriage). Unexpectedly Allah’s Apostle came to me in the forenoon and my mother handed me over to him, and at that time I was a girl of nine years of age. (Bukhari 5.58.234).
Muhammad was at this time fifty-four years old. Nowadays in the West there are elaborate efforts to deny all this. An Islamic scholar/apologist named Joshua Little has constructed an elaborate argument from close study of the chains of transmitters (isnads) of various traditions about Aisha, claiming that those traditions, despite appearing in Sahih Bukhari, the hadith collection Muslims consider most reliable, are actually inauthentic. Little’s argument, however, is absurd and self-contradictory. He acknowledges that the hadiths are late and unreliable from a historical standpoint, and even admits that the chains of transmitters, like the stories themselves, were freely forged. Then he bases his whole argument for the traditions being inauthentic even on Islamic grounds on the basis of the isnads that he just admitted could be forged. He claims to be able to determine the age of various traditions by how they were forged, but here is argument is so conjectural and subjective as to be essentially worthless.
Little is also a standard-issue lemming academic. He denounces people he calls “Islamophobes” for making much of Muhammad’s marriage to Aisha. He ignores the primary reason why anyone cares about this: not because, as he claims, “Islamophobes” contend that Muhammad’s example forces Muslims to condone child marriage, but because all too many Islamic authorities do condone child marriage. In April 2011, the Bangladesh Mufti Fazlul Haque Amini declared that those trying to pass a law banning child marriage in that country were putting Muhammad in a bad light: “Banning child marriage will cause challenging the marriage of the holy prophet of Islam, [putting] the moral character of the prophet into controversy and challenge.” He added a threat: “Islam permits child marriage and it will not be tolerated if any ruler will ever try to touch this issue in the name of giving more rights to women.” The Mufti said that 200,000 jihadists were ready to sacrifice their lives for any law restricting child marriage.
Turkey’s directorate of religious affairs (Diyanet) said in January 2018 that under Islamic law, girls as young as nine can marry.

In a recent question and answers session following a Christian-Muslim debate held at North Carolina State University, North Carolina Islamic scholar Abdullah Khadra defended the Prophet Muhammad’s marriage to Aisha when she was still a child. In Islam it is understood that “you can marry a child, but you can never have a [physical] relationship with her until she is psychologically and physically able,” he said, adding that in some countries, girls reach maturity at a young age, and that “in our community [in the U.S.’]… we have girls in grade 5 who reach maturity, reach puberty.”
He further justified the practice by saying that historically, the age of marriage in the U.S. was once 9 years of age. “It doesn’t matter if in that community it is OK, and there is no physical harm, no psychological harm… and it is by consent of all parties. What is the issue with that?”
The April 14 debate, which pitted Reverend Anthony Rogers against Sheikh Khadra, was titled “The Great Debate Series — Trinity or Tawhid?”
Abdullah Khadra: “About Lady Aisha, God be pleased with her, the Mother of the Believers…”

Khadra: “No. Lady Aisha, God be pleased with her – yes, she was young. Now, what is the age of marriage in the U.S.? Every state has a different age. There are some countries outside, in the world, where girls can marry at 12 years old. What is the issue with this? In Africa, girls reach maturity much much younger. Even here in the U.S., I know that we have some students from our families, our acquaintances, where girls in grade 5 reach maturity, reach puberty.
“Very briefly, the worst enemies of the Prophet Muhammad, in his own time, did not object to this and did not say: ‘Oh, look, he’s marrying a young lady.’ In Islam, it is understood that by consensus, you can marry a child, but you can never have a [physical] relationship with her until she is psychologically and physically able. If a father is loving and wants to give his daughter in marriage to someone who is righteous – well, if the Prophet was here, everyone would love to do that, and give his daughter to the Prophet. So there is nothing wrong with that. That is their culture.
“You cannot measure your culture after their culture. In the U.S., go to the history [books]. You will find that the age of marriage sometimes was 9 years old. Everyone can search now on the Internet. It can be 9 years old, 8 years old… It doesn’t matter if in that community it is OK, and there is no physical harm, no psychological harm, and there is no problem – it is by consent of all parties. There were so many times rapists got off due to the fact that courts allowed attorneys to claim that the victims asked to be raped due in the way they dressed or that they were out alone or drinkin. Laws were changed to keep the victims from getting blamed and the rapist set free.
There are other laws that have caused a lot of changes from the way things were in the past…like child labor, and paying women less than men for the same job.

Muslims are making a rod for their own back. Although classified as “Sahih” (authentic) it is unlikely the Hadiths allegedly narrated by Urwa ibn al Zubayr and Aisha are genuine. Bukhari has 6 and 9 years and Muslim 7 and 9. There are indications in the Sira that Aisha must have been at least 18. Joshua Little’s doctoral thesis makes a solid case that the report was invented to show Aisha was pure to defend her reputation against the Shia who particularly hated her for her opposition to Ali. Quran surah 65 (al Talaq/Divorce) verse 4 has “Prophet when you divorce women”‘-al nisa’ (women) not ‘al banat ‘ (girls). So it is very unlike to refer to pre-pubescent girls getting a divorce and therefore getting married and consumating the marriage.

A psychologically healthy grown man has no attraction to little girls.
The attraction in such a relationship is that the developing brain of a much younger person is susceptible to suggestion and the greater size/strength differential makes a little girl easier to dominate.
Mentioning that in parts of early America girls were married off is leaving out a lot, such as the fact the groom was usually the same age or just a little older.
