Matar’s motive is completely clear and straightforward. He wanted to kill Rushdie for insulting Islam. Because the leftist intelligentsia wants to conceal the possibility that anyone would do such a thing, the motive suddenly becomes “complicated.”

Schmidt, the prosecutor, said Matar deserved the maximum sentence of 25 years, saying Matar “designed this attack so that he could inflict the most amount of damage, not just upon Mr. Rushdie, but upon this community, upon the 1,400 people who were there to watch it.”

Matar believed the fatwa that called for Rushdie’s death, first issued by Iran’s then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989, was backed by Iran’s Lebanese proxy Hezbollah and endorsed in a 2006 speech by the group’s slain chief Hassan Nasrallah, according to US federal prosecutors….

I also blame the simpleton arrangers of the speaking event. They should be sentenced to jail for inviting a well known figure without proper security arrangements. Its not rocket science to put in place armed security guards around the podium and throughout the area. The arrangers of that speaking event should be investigated.
