It is shortly after 4:00 a.m. when the knife strikes. People are standing outside the “Cutie” bar, a popular meeting place in downtown Bielefeld. It is warm, loud, and lively. Seconds later, blood lies on the pavement. A man has stabbed several patrons, apparently at random. Witnesses report a second object – a sword cane, a martial weapon more reminiscent of past centuries than the nightlife of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The police are no longer calling it an attack, but rather a planned attack. The perpetrator, who managed to escape, left behind a backpack with disturbing contents: flammable liquid, additional weapons—and an official document made out to a Syrian national. The fact that investigators discovered a Syrian residence permit will further fuel the debate. There’s no need for general suspicion here – but an honest analysis. For too long, warning signs have been ignored, and problems with religious fanaticism and political extremism have been downplayed. Not all dangerous individuals wear bomb belts. Some carry a walking stick with a blade.

The manhunt is ongoing. The perpetrator is considered dangerous. The police are urging the public to exercise extreme caution – and not to arrest the man themselves, but to call emergency services immediately. Who this man is, what motivated him, who helped him, or whether he acted alone: ​​all of this must be clarified. But one thing is already certain: Bielefeld isn’t just one more nightmare. It’s a symbol of a threat that’s closer than many believe.
