The class president of the graduating class at MIT this year is one Megha Vemuri. An Indian-American, Vemuri is apparently a Hindu, but one who clearly has no idea that the same jihadist impulse that ever since 1948 has forced the Jewish state to fight three major wars for its survival in 1948, 1967, and 1973, and dozens of lesser campaigns against terrorists, is what has also impelled Pakistan to attack India in three wars, caused Muslim terror groups based in Pakistan to engage in cross-border raids into India, causing mayhem and murder, as they did in Mumbai in September, 2008, and cause Indian Muslims to murder Hindus inside India simply for being Hindus, and in the wrong place at the wrong time, such as passing by a mosque as Friday Prayers were just getting out. How strange that Megha Vemuri is so incurious as not to have known anything about the most important event in the history of her parents’ country, India, which was the massacre of some 70-80 million Hindus, who were killed by Muslims over 250 years of Mughal rule. “MIT class president dedicates graduation speech to Palestine, calls for arms embargo,” Jerusalem Post, May 30, 2025:
MIT class president Megha Vemuri dedicated her commencement speech to Palestine at the University’s graduation on Thursday.
Vemuri wore a kefiyyah on top of her robe and stated that “MIT wants a free Palestine.”
What does that phrase — “a free Palestine” — mean? In the chanting on the MIT campus against Israel, the most common refrain was “From the river to the sea/Palestine shall be free.” Does Vemuri understand that that phrase means the state of Israel should be replaced, in its entirety, by a 23rd Arab state, the state of “Palestine,” and its current Jewish inhabitants should all be expelled or killed?
Here’s what the keffiyeh-clothed Megha Vemuri said:
“You called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, and you stood in solidarity with the pro-Palestine activists on campus. You faced threats, intimidation, and suppression coming from all directions, especially your own university officials. But you prevailed because the MIT community that I know would never tolerate a genocide,” she continued.
What can she be talking about? The students who demonstrated on the MIT campus against Israel and in favor of Hamas did not “face threats, intimidation, and suppression.” It was they who made life difficult for Jewish students on campus, surrounding them, shouting at them, preventing them from leaving when they wished to go elsewhere, blocking their entry to some classrooms. Vemuri wants to present herself as a brave spokesman for the “oppressed” protesters; it won’t wash.
And as for her charge that Israel is committing “genocide” in Gaza, no matter how many times she and others make this baseless charge, hoping by dint of repetition to convince others of its truth, the facts provide a different. So yet again let’s go over those facts. Hamas says 55,000 people have died in Gaza. Of those, the IDF says at least 22,000 were Hamas combatants. That figure is six months old, and so is likely to be an undercount, but let’s stick with it, as the IDF has not released more recent figures on Hamas deaths. We also know that in Gaza, about 800 people die each month from non-combat-related causes, including disease (cancer, heart attack) and accidents. In the 20 months of war, that means 16,000 Gazans died for reasons having nothing to do with the war. Now let’s do the math: 55,000-22,000 equals 33,000. 33,000 minus 16,000 equals 17,000. That means a total of 17,000 civilians have died in Gaza as a result of the war. That is much less than 1% of Gaza’s total population of 2.2 million. If less than 1% of the population is killed in war, can anyone really claim that to be a “genocide”?
One more telling metric that must be calculated for any war is the civilian-to-combatant ratio. The UN has calculated that in every war since 1945, that ratio has averaged 9:1. In Afghanistan the Americans brought that ratio down to 4:1, and in Iraq, to 3:1. But in Gaza the IDF has brought that ratio down to 17:22, or far less than 1:1. It’s a figure without parallel in modern military history. Would Megha Vemuri care to comment? Or perhaps she would care to comment on British Colonel Richard Kemp’s remark that “the IDF is the most moral army in the world,” or on West Point Professor John Spencer’s conclusion, after studying the war in Gaza from its very beginning, that “Israel has done more and implemented more measures to prevent civilian harm than any military in the history of urban warfare.”
Vemuri spoke against Israel, saying that the country was trying to “wipe Palestine off the face of the earth,” adding that MIT was complicit….
If Israel is “trying to wipe Palestine off the face of the earth” then why didn’t Israel just do it, in the first month of the war, bombing all of Gaza with unending waves of bombers? If Israel wants to “wipe Palestine off the face of the earth,” why does the IDF make a tremendous effort to warn civilians to leave sites and buildings about to be targeted? Already in the first six months of the war, the IDF had dropped nine million leaflets, sent fifteen million text messages, and made sixteen million robocalls, all with that aim of warning civilians. Does that monumental effort to warn civilians make sense if you are trying to “wipe Palestine off the face of the earth”?
MIT President Sally Kornbluth took the stage immediately after, expressing her disapproval of Vemuri’s speech.
“At MIT, we value freedom of expression. But today is about the graduates, so it’s time for me to charge you all,” Kornbluth said.
“There is a time and a place to express yourselves, and you will have many, many years to do it.”
Kornbluth’s reproach was far too mild. It was a gentle reminder that there is a time and a place for certain kinds of speech, and graduation was neither the time nor the place for the scandalously hostile rant about Israel that Megha Vemuri delivered, no doubt fancying herself as a veritable La Pasionaria of the Infinite Corridor.
Vemuri’s degree is in computer science, neuroscience, and linguistics. In a few years, after she has received her doctorate, she will be looking for a job. I trust that many employers, having searched for her name, will look at her MIT speech and decide, on that basis, that she wouldn’t be a good fit.

The simple inability to accurately assess the actual numbers, as the article here performs, leaves me to wonder about this young woman’s capability’s. I mean, she’s an MIT science graduate. She’s at the top of her field in terms of graduating from a top school. And yet…. she can’t find a way to accurately measure some statistics, without skewing them?? Her failure is not of her science capabilites, but in her ethical failure.

A young man came into the room and sat down. The teacher began his lecture and soon, the smoke began to come in. Everyone in the room, except for the one man, kept their eyes on the speaker, looking forward as the smoke curled in behind them.
The young man looked at the faces of the others in the room, looked at the smoke, made faces but said not one word.
Another group was told to agree with wrong answers before the last person entered the room.
As questions were asked, wrong answers were given and everyone agreed. The one young man looked so puzzled, but he didn’t disagree when asked if he agreed with the responses.

Had she been a real Hindu, she would have used that speech to denounce the bullying of Hindus throughout India by both muslims, as well as all their political parties. She’d have denounced the jihad attack on Pahalgam, and hey! – she could even have denounced President Trump for stopping the war before India was done w/ it (that would have at least been a legitimate criticism), thereby endearing herself to the Leftists around her, even if for a moment.
