Lebanese president says ‘Lebanon supports returning to the 1949 armistice agreement with Israel’

Fifteen months ago, “amid diplomatic efforts to quell clashes in southern Lebanon between Hezbollah and Israel,” Beirut advocated for a return to the Armistice Agreement. How convenient. The agreement was signed between Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Egypt to end the 1948 War of Independence, when Arab countries tried to destroy Israel right after its establishment as as Jewish nation. Under the Armistice Agreement, a Green Line that served as a demarcation line between the forces when the fighting ended became the de facto borders between the countries until the 1967 Six-Day War, when Israel again found itself in a battle against Arab countries for its very existence. To this day, those pre-1967 borders, a/k/a the “Auschwitz borders,” are absurdly recognized in “international law” as the official borders that encompass the Gaza Strip, Judea and Samaria.

The world saw what happened on October 7, 2023, and efforts and threats to destroy the state of Israel are just as much alive in Judea and Samaria as they are in Gaza. Land-for-peace deals never worked to sustain any peace, nor will they. Agreements were always violated on the Arab side. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation continues to refuse to recognize Israel.

Lebanon’s call for a return to the 1949 armistice with Israel is an insult to Israel. It merely attracts global propagandists to present Israel as if it were an unwilling partner to peace. It is the jihadist zeal for conquest that has always been and will always be an obstacle to peace in the region, and everywhere else. Despite assurances from President Joseph Aoun, Lebanon has demonstrated a history of inability to control Hizballah and other jihadists.

A senior Hizballah official has stated that Hizballah is “ready to lay down weapons if Israel withdraws from Lebanon.” To believe the word of jihadists — who cause the death of their own children for the jihadi cause — demonstrates one to be hopelessly naive and incompetent. Israel can only count on itself to protect its citizens and country from obliteration.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said on Monday that Lebanon supports returning to the 1949 armistice agreement with Israel in an interview with the Qatari state-run Al Jazeera television network.

The 1949 Armistice Agreements were signed between Israel, Egypt, Lebanon, and Syria and marked the end of the hostilities in relation to Israel’s War of Independence.

Aoun also said in the interview that the Lebanese army had discovered tunnels and ammunition depots in both the southern and northern parts of the Litani River, describing the army’s achievements in this regard as significant. Lebanon’s army has not deployed across the entire border area in the South due to Israel’s occupation of five points, Aoun added.

Additionally, Aoun said that the army was “performing its duty and was ready to take responsibility for securing the borders.”

However, he also called for pressure to be applied on Israel, expressing his support for forming military, civilian, and technical committees to strengthen Lebanon’s southern borders.
