Kanye (Ye) is down to his last few hundred million dollars; just a year ago, he was worth several billon. His antisemitism, his admiration for Hitler, has cost him contracts, now cancelled, with Adidas and Balenciaga. His talent agency dropped him. Various musicians whom he has asked to allow him to quote their music in his own have refused. One of his former Jewish employees has sued him for the antisemitic and bullying atmosphere of his workplace. She stands to make a goodly sum. German singer-songwriter Alice Merton filed a lawsuit against Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) in US District Court in California on Tuesday for copyright infringement, claiming that the rapper sampled her song after she denied his request to do so because of his past antisemitic and racist remarks.
Merton — best known for her 2017 hit song “No Roots” — is accusing the “Graduation” rapper of the “unauthorized commercial exploitation” of her song “Blindside,” which she wrote and recorded in 2022. The musician, who lives in the United Kingdom, claimed in her lawsuit that Ye knowingly used an “unauthorized sample” of her song on his track “Gun to My Head,” which also features Ty Dolla $ign and Kid Cudi.
In August 2024, Ye released a digital deluxe edition of his album “Vultures 2” on his website and it featured the original tracklist on “Vultures 2” as well as new songs, including “Gun to My Head.” The song features Merton’s vocals singing the line, “I sat down with a gun to my head,” which is the opening line of “Blindside.” Ye’s song also replays a phrase from “Blindside” throughout majority of the tune, according to Merton’s lawsuit….
BMG sent a cease and desist letter to Ye in August 2024, demanding that he refrain from any further copyright violation. He did not respond to the letter, according to Merton’s lawsuit. She is seeking “injunctive relief” and unspecified damages for the alleged “copyright infringement and unfair competition.” She is also calling for a trial by jury “on all issues so triable.”Ye has been sued at least 14 times for his unauthorized use of samples in his music since 2008, according to Merton’s lawsuit….
It’s not just Merton from whom Ye has stolen music samples; if he’s been sued 14 times that we know of, think of how many other threats to sue have been quietly settled out of court. Ye is a serial plagiarist — make that man the President of Harvard!
Morally, Ye does not exist. The only thing that matters to him is money. And fame. He’s suffered a lot for his faith — that is, his abiding faith in, and adoration of, Adolf Hitler and the Nazis — which has caused him to lose major contracts with, among others, sneaker giant Adidas and Balenciaga, to be dropped by his talent agency, and to be turned down by other musicians whose work he wished to use in his own music. Suffered, yes. but clearly it hasn’t yet been enough. He’s down to his last few hundred million, after once having been worth more than two billion dollars. What should his former Jewish employee, now suing for his threatening antisemitic bullying, receive in a settlement? Ten million dollars? Twenty? And much more should go to the indomitable Alice Merton for Ye’s unauthorized sampling of her music. Ye is spiraling downward, ever crazier, ever more repellent, into a world of woe and financial degringolade entirely of his own idiotic making.
A line of Housman, slightly revised by me, comes to mind: “First a little, thence to more/Ye sampled all her billing store.”
His courtroom squirm, as he comes a cropper, will be a pleasure to watch.
