The Israelis are constantly working to improve their weaponry, both as to performance and as to cost. The Iron Dome anti-missile system, first introduced in 2006, has been impressive enough, capable of intercepting more than 90% of the missiles launched toward Israel. However, it is expensive: each interception requires the firing of two Tamir missiles. Each Tamir missile costs $40,000, meaning that each interception costs $80,000. But now the Israeli scientists at Rafael and Elbit have developed a high-energy laser system that will reduce the cost of such interceptions to the scarcely believe price of two dollars. Here are some details from an October 2024 story that remains pertinent:
The Defense Ministry announced on Monday that it signed an agreement with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Elbit Systems valued at around NIS two billion ($534 million) to significantly expand its acquisition of Iron Beam laser interception systems.
Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Elbit Systems are Israeli defense technology companies.
The agreement was signed the day after the Defense Ministry’s Director-General Eyal Zamir signed an order to broaden the laser system’s production, the ministry said.
“Since the outbreak of the war, the Defense Ministry has signed hundreds of orders worth tens of billions of shekels” to strengthen the country’s independence by manufacturing products in Israel and “to build up the IDF’s capabilities,” Zamir said. “Our primary goal is to reduce reliance on external sources and to bolster the Israeli industry,” he further added.
The Israelis, having been stung by the embargos, both partial and full, on weapons sales to Israel put in place by Spain, the U.K., France, and previously by the Biden administration, are keen to become as independent as possible in the manufacture of weapons the country needs.
On its website, Rafael described the Iron Beam as a “100kW class, high energy laser weapon system” that is anticipated to be the first such system in its class.
According to the company, it is effective at targeting threats at distances ranging from hundreds of meters to several kilometers away.
A ‘high-power laser solution’
Additionally, as former prime minister Naftali Bennett noted during a 2022 visit to a Rafael factory, as opposed to the Iron Dome system, which costs tens of thousands of dollars for each interceptor fired, the Iron Beam system costs around two dollars per use.
In a press statement, Elbit Systems announced on Monday that the Defense Ministry had awarded it an approximately $200 million contract.
Elbit stated that the contract was awarded to the company to supply Israel’s Iron Beam air defense system with high-power laser systems….
Israeli scientists are the gift that keep on giving. Their latest achievement are these high-energy lasers that can be used to shoot down oncoming missiles. Now the IDF will be able to use the Iron Beam, a missile interception system based on the use of high-energy lasers, that will cost not what each Iron Dome interception now costs —$80,000 for two Tamir missiles — but only two dollars. What other amazements will come out of the scientists at Elbit and Rafael Systems? And thank god that Israel is on our side.

With Israel facing terroristic threats from the 50+ Islamic Countries, Israel needs every affordable weapon possible(Quran 9:5,29,111 and more).
Non-Muslims CANNOT have peace with Islam, a Terrorist-Criminal Enterprise, and its deceitful believers because Islam and its murderous god, Allah, demand a continuous Muslim war, a RELIGIOUS DUTY, against unbelievers where Non-Muslims are CRIMINALS under Islam due to illegal UNBELIEF and unlawful BLASPHEMY against Allah when despicable Allah in Qur’an 8:39 says, “And engage in war with them[Non-Muslims] until there will not be sedition and the religion will be completely to Allah…” Islam contradicts Western Laws and incites violence and terrorism against Non-Muslims as Allah punishes Non-Muslims by the Muslim hands(Quran 9:14 and more). HENCE, NON-MUSLIMS MUST MAKE ISLAM, ITS MOSQUES, ITS SCHOOLS, ITS COURTS, ETC. ILLEGAL UNDER WESTERN LAW.
Similarly, Islam and its many Organizations must be identified and publicly declared to be MUSLIM TERRORIST ORGANIZATIONS(MTO) for their funding, teaching, and support of terrorism, violence, and discrimination against Non-Muslims as taught in Islam’s Quran(eg. Quran 3:151; 9:5,29,111; 60:4; 98:6-7 and more).

Yes. We don’t need to know!!!
Throughout human history, alas, any innovation in weapons technology eventually seems to become available to everyone…. if you are a sane and decent player and you invent something really powerful that gives you an advantage over the hordes of mass-murderous barbarians next door to you, you had better use it quickly because if not.. pretty soon the mass-murderous barbarians will have it as well.. often thanks to greedy short-sighted people in your own society, or outright traitors… and use it, without hesitation.

Syrian state forces continue sectarian killings of Alawites
Over 40 Syrian Alawites have been killed in the past two weeks, while over a dozen young women have been abducted and remain missing. A month after government-affiliated forces massacred some 1,700 Alawites in Syria’s coastal regions, the killing, abduction, and robbing of members of the minority religious minority continue.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), 42 people have died in sectarian killings since the end of Ramadan on 30 March. Incidents have spread from Latakia to Tartus and inland to Homs.
“The killings did not stop, but now they are individual acts,” said Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Observatory.
The Syrian government, led by former Al-Qaeda in Iraq commander Ahmad al-Sharaa, has justified the killings, characterizing them as “mistakes” committed as part of a counterinsurgency crackdown on so-called “Assad regime remnants.”
However, an Alawite who lives in the Latakia area told AP there are still regular attacks targeting Alawites, most of whom had nothing to do with the former government of Bashar al-Assad or his security forces.
“Everyone from the regime or close to it fled a long time ago,” he stated, speaking on condition of anonymity out of fear for his life.
He said guards killed a 20-year-old factory worker at a local checkpoint. He was the breadwinner of his family and had not served in the army under Assad.
“He would pass the checkpoints on his motorcycle every day. He and the guards would even greet each other,” he said.
Victims include Alawites, who suffered under Assad’s rule. Activist Mohammed Saleh, a former political prisoner, told the AP that 18 Alawite friends who opposed Assad were massacred by pro-government forces last month.
Saleh said he is worried that Syria is turning from one dictatorship to another.
“What we want is to have a serious national army and security agencies whose job is to protect everyone and that they include everyone and not be made up of one sect or one religion,” Saleh said. “There cannot be a state for everyone when security agencies belong to one sect.”
Many young Syrian women have also been abducted and remain missing.
Syria is witnessing a disturbing wave of enforced disappearance and kidnapping at the hands of unknown militants, SOHR reported on Tuesday.
At least 17 women, among them minors, have recently disappeared in mysterious circumstances, and their fate is still unknown, according to the Observatory.

Amnesty International Syria researcher Diana Semaan documented cases during the 7 March massacres where attackers explicitly blamed victims for Assad-era abuses. “They asked if they were Alawite or Sunni and said they were paying for what happened under the regime,” she noted.
Hundreds of videos have been posted to social media, taken by members of fighting units belonging to Syria’s General Security and Ministry of Defense themselves, showing the brutal execution of unarmed Alawite men between 7 and 9 March.
In some instances, unarmed men were forced to crawl and bark like dogs in the street before their execution.
On 9 March, Sharaa reportedly tasked a fact-finding committee with producing a report within 30 days that would help determine the perpetrators and hold them to account.
However, on 11 April, Sharaa extended the deadline for the committee to produce its report for three additional months.
Reuters noted that Alawite residents of the coastal province of Latakia, where much of the violence took place, expressed concern that the investigation is not sincere.
Firas, a 43-year-old Alawite who only gave his first name out of fear of retribution, told the news agency that the extension was an attempt to “stall and buy more time.” He said there was little hope the committee’s work would lead to real accountability.
In 2015, while serving as the head of the Nusra Front, the official Al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria, Sharaa, in an interview with Al Jazeera, called for Alawites to convert to Sunni Islam or be killed.
Meanwhile, approximately 30,000 Alawites have fled to Lebanon, citing fear of further violence.

I understand that there are some weaknesses. It would seem the system doesn’t work in certain weather circumstances. But superb work.
I do note the following passage:
‘The Israelis, having been stung by the embargos, both partial and full, on weapons sales to Israel put in place by Spain, the U.K., France, and previously by the Biden administration, are keen to become as independent as possible in the manufacture of weapons the country needs.’
Surprise, surprise, but this suddenly has become very recognizable to many countries.

I also note the next passage:
‘(…) it is effective at targeting threats at distances ranging from hundreds of meters to several kilometers away.’
Hmmm, several kilometers away. ‘That ain’t too far’, now, ain’t it?’

Capt. Quirk,
Yes, it concerns me too. Seems like the laser is more of a “close-in weapon system” CIWS.
Yes, the new laser should be used – but in conjunction with the Iron Dome:
“Iron Dome’s Tamir missile knocks down incoming threats launched from ranges of 4-70 km.”
