For years, German security authorities felt safe: Hamas? Yes, dangerous – but only in the Middle East. Not here! The 2022 German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) report spoke of “collecting donations, spreading propaganda.”

But now this illusion has exploded. A trial in Berlin against four suspected Hamas sleeper agents shows: The Islamists were long ready for terror on German soil. Their trail leads across Europe – and directly into the heart of Berlin.

One of the defendants ran a restaurant in Kreuzberg. Another drove a taxi. Unobtrusive, friendly – ​​seemingly integrated.

But then this: Restaurant owner Ibrahim El-R. set up a weapons cache in Bulgaria in the spring of 2019. Later, he allegedly smuggled a pistol into Germany from another hideout in Denmark. The Federal Prosecutor General is certain: They were searching for hidden weapons in several countries.

The discovery of a USB stick caught the attention of investigators. What they found on it is highly explosive: coordinates, photos, clues to possible targets in Germany. Several locations were spied on: the Israeli Embassy in Berlin, the US military airport in Ramstein, and Tempelhofer Feld, one of Berlin’s most visited parks.

Terrorism expert Hans-Jakob Schindler warns in the NZZ: “The fact that the group targeted the busy park suggests that they may have been considering a mass attack.”

The trial not only reveals plans – it demonstrates a strategic reversal. Europe is apparently no longer a place of refuge for Hamas – but a target of attack.

The organization is under pressure in Gaza. Israel is striking back after the massacre of October 7. On the defensive, Hamas is now apparently seeking a “counterattack” – in the cities of Europe. “Germany, as Israel’s second-largest arms supplier, is a logical target,” says Schindler. “In the minds of the terrorist organization, attacks could be a way to break Germany’s solidarity with Israel.”

The Berlin terror trial is only one side of the threat. The other is spiritual in nature – but no less dangerous. It provides the religious justification for jihad in the heart of Europe. At the beginning of April, the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS), which is part of the Muslim Brotherhood, published a fatwa that is quite powerful: The armed struggle against Israel is an individual religious duty for all Muslims worldwide, it states – as reported by exxpress.

It literally states: “Supporting the Mujahideen with weapons, expertise, and information is a binding duty.”

Particularly explosive: Hamas – which is the focus of the Berlin trial – is the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. What was planned in Berlin has the backing of the highest religious authorities – and a clear global mandate for violence. Experts like Heiko Heinisch therefore warn: “This call also represents an immediate threat to internal security in Europe.”

According to the German-Israeli Society, the IUMS maintains connections with over 1,000 mosques in Germany, including major Islamic associations such as Ditib, IGMG, DMG, and the Central Council of Muslims.

The radical tone of Hamas has become is also demonstrated by a statement made after Donald Trump’s push to resettle the Palestinians. A Hamas spokesperson called for violence worldwide at the time: “Hold no explosives, no ammunition, no knife, and no stone.”

A stronghold of Hamas supporters today exists in Berlin-Neukölln. While Israel was still recovering the victims of the massacre on October 7, there was already jubilation. Baklava was being distributed in the streets. Since then, weekly anti-Israel demonstrations have taken place – with slogans like “Intifada Revolution.”

Many demonstrators openly profess their allegiance to Hamas – on social media, they post red triangles, the symbol of the terrorist organization. Counter-demonstrators have been spat upon.
