After enduring ten years of the far-left misrule of the vapid and eternally callow Justin Trudeau, Canada has a new prime minister, but not any new ideas or any change of direction at the top: the new boss, Mark Carney, is the same as the old boss, a shallow leftist ideologue without an original thought in his entire sorry cerebellum, which is filled instead with the usual talking points of the leftist establishment that still wields power in much of the Western world.
Fox News reported Saturday that Carney was speaking at a rally out in Calgary, Alberta, when a frenzied leftist in the crowd screamed: “Mr. Carney, there’s a genocide happening in Palestine!” Instead of responding the way any public figure with even a modicum of interest in the truth would have and should have done, Carney went along. After all, leftists have been passionately advancing the lie that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza practically since the moment that the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas massacre of 1,200 Israelis was over. Who is Carney, a loyal leftist apparatchik if there ever was one, to offer a word of dissent?
And so the dutiful Carney toed the party line. Fox noted that he “thanked the protester and said, ‘I’m aware, which is why we have an arms embargo’ as the crowd began chanting his name.” That’s what happens when you’re speaking to a gaggle of leftists and you affirm them in their delusions and fantasies: they treat as if you were the most magnificent of heroes. If, on the other hand, Carney had treated the crowd to some unwelcome truths, he would have been in danger of being torn limb from limb.
That doesn’t get him off the hook, however. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu immediately took umbrage at the spectacle of Carney repeating Hamas talking points, and said: “Canada has always sided with civilization. So should Mr. Carney. But instead of supporting Israel, a democracy that is fighting a just war with just means against the barbarians of Hamas, he attacks the one and only Jewish state. Mr. Carney, backtrack your irresponsible statement.”
Canada’s Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) said: “It is outrageous to see politicians fuel antisemitism through false narratives of demonization. There is no genocide in Gaza. Claiming otherwise is false.”
Facing the backlash, Carney punted and took the coward’s way out. He “claimed he did not hear the protester say the word ‘genocide.’” Carney explained: “It’s noisy. If you’re up there you hear snippets of what people say and I heard Gaza, and my point was I’m aware of the situation in Gaza.” As Old Joe Biden would say, come on, man! Does Carney really expect anyone to believe this?

As Alawites continue to be targeted on the Syrian coast, Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal, head of the Supreme Alawite Islamic Council in Syria and Diaspora, called on April 9 for international protection, the establishment of an independent international investigation committee, and the activation of the role of international humanitarian organizations.
The Alawites are Syria’s largest religious minority group. The family of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad belongs to the sect.
More than 1,600 civilians, mostly Alawites, were killed during a government crackdown on the coast that began on March 6.
After facing international pressure, the Syrian government announced that all operations on the coast were over by March 10 and formed an investigation committee. However, war monitors and activists have repeatedly warned since then that Alawite civilians were still being targeted by government forces.
In a statement, Ghazal emphasized that protecting human life, regardless of race, religion, or nationality, is not a political act, but a humanitarian duty.
He noted that “the killing, kidnapping, and mutilation of living bodies has not ceased to this day, and requires urgent international intervention to protect civilians, especially in the affected areas.”
“Thousands of civilians and soldiers remain detained and their fate unknown, and members of the Alawite sect are being fought for their livelihood simply because they do not espouse extremist ‘terrorist’ ideology.” He emphasized that this “suffering also affects broad segments of Syrian society, including Kurds, Druze, Christians, and others who call for peace, coexistence, and democracy.”
The fate of some eight thousand Alawites, including former officers and soldiers, who were arrested by government forces after the fall of the Assad regime, remains unclear.
Ghazal also emphasized his “rejection of accusing innocent women, children, and the elderly of being remnants of the regime,” and his commitment to defending them, noting that was not a sectarian or political position, but rather a position of conscience, humanity, and religious and national responsibility.
The statement was released just hours after government forces killed three unarmed Alawite men in the Alawite-majority coastal city of Latakia.
Activists from Latakia said that at least two young men, brothers Mahran and Mohammad Adira, were killed. Government forces apprehended them at the al-Azhari roundabout in the north of the city, and shot them on the spot, leaving their bodies in the street.
Later, the official Syrian Arab News Agency quoted a police commander in Latakia as saying that a special force “engaged” on April 9 with the head of a “cell belonging to regime remnants” who had killed two policemen last month.
The cell’s chief and at least one of its members “were neutralised”, the official said. “No effort will be spared in the pursuit of all terrorist groupings and striking [at them] with an iron fist,” he added.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that a total of three Alawite men were killed in the al-Azhari roundabout incident. One of them was wanted in a legal case while the other two were on their way back to work, according to the London-based monitoring group.
Videos posted to social networks later showed government personnel stomping on the body of one of the three in front of passing cars as well as the dead bodies of the other two.
The killings on the coast displaced nearly 50,000 Alawites to northern and eastern Lebanon with around 10,000 others taking shelter at Russia’s Khmeimim Air Base near the city of Jableh in the southern countryside of Latakia. With more killings being reported on a daily basis, the numbers of refugees continue to grow.
So far, the Syrian Islamist-led interim government has shown no real desire to hold those responsible for the recent killings on the coast accountable or to engage in a constructive way with the Alawites.
As a result, the Alawites appear to have lost all trust in the government. Calls for international protection have prevailed within the group. Still, it is unclear if the United Nations Security Council would be willing to move forward with such a complex mission.
