Syrian leader Abu Mohammad al-Jolani (Ahmed al-Sharaa) cannot be trusted or accepted as a legitimate leader of Syria, no matter what he promises. For expedient reasons, he changed his name to Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa, as if doing so could obscure his career as a jihad leader, and serve as a kind of facelift. And now, also for expedient reasons, he’s vowing to destroy the remainder of the chemical weapons stockpile left by the al-Assad regime. But al-Sharaa has served his religion well as leader of the salafist Al-Nusra Front, aka the Front for the Conquest of the Levant. Its goal was conquest: to overthrow al-Assad and establish an Islamic State governed by Sharia law. Whatever promises al-Sharaa makes to gain points with the West is a show of his efforts to play the West for fools.
Here’s more about al-Sharaa’s Syrian opposition group: during the Syrian civil war, according to the Institute for the Study of War in Washington, Jabhat al-Nusra (the Al-Nusra Front) rivaled “ISIS as a sophisticated, intelligent, strategic actor in the region and continues to enjoy a dangerous freedom to operate in Syria. The two groups share common goals, including a revived Islamic Caliphate.” Jabhat al-Nusra, “however, is pursuing its aims through a distinct, more patient methodology that is highly threatening despite its low signature. Whereas ISIS has announced its state and tried to legitimize it by conquest,” Jabhat al-Nusra “was following AQ leader Ayman al-Zawahiri’s method of fomenting a religious and social revolution by embedding itself within an indigenous insurgency.” The Syrian war provided Jabhat al-Nusra “a nearly ideal environment within which to implement this strategy on behalf of al-Qaeda.”
A leopard can’t change its spots. Al-Sharaa is a grave enemy to the West and an immediate danger to Israel.
Promising to destroy chemical weapons left behind by al-Assad doesn’t detract from the fact that al-Sharaa is a seasoned, deceitful jihadist, backed by Turkey’s jihadist strongman — Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Syria’s foreign minister has vowed to swiftly rid the country of the chemical weapons remaining after the downfall of Bashar al-Assad’s government, and he appealed to the international community for help.
Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani spoke during closed-door meetings at the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague, where he became the first Syrian foreign minister to address the disarmament agency.
Following a sarin gas attack that killed hundreds of people in 2013, Assad-led Syria joined the agency under a US-Russian deal and 1,300 metric tonnes of chemical weapons and precursors were destroyed.
But three inquiries – by a joint UN-OPCW mechanism, the OPCW’s investigation and identification team, and a UN war crimes investigation – concluded that Syrian government forces under Assad used the nerve agent sarin and chlorine barrel bombs in attacks during the civil war that killed or injured thousands.
As part of its membership, Damascus was supposed to undergo inspections, but for more than a decade the OPCW was prevented from uncovering the true scale of its chemical weapons programme.

Didn’t Israel destroy them in their bombing of Syrian military facilities days after HTS took over? What’s left?
I sometimes wonder whether Saddam Hussein actually did have a chemical weapons program, which he then transferred to Syria, due to the fact that his differences w/ Syria diminished after the death of Hafez al-Assad?

The only way that I would trust al-Sharaa is if he invited an international contingent into Syria to identify, mark for destruction, and then actually destroy these chemical weapons and any precursor chemicals.
Having experts in charge of the destruction would also eliminate the problem of a poisonous release due to degradation over time and war damage to the containers.
