Wouldn’t it be ironical if Putin offers to mediate between Trump and Zelenskyy?
Just kidding!
࿗Infidel࿘ says
Actually, if one looks at it from a purely US interests POV, the rare earth minerals that the US is interested in is something we can get more easily from Russia, w/o worrying about it being in conflict zones. In fact, I was watching a video of Putin listing a bunch of areas in Russia, from their Far East through Siberia to the Volga region, where he stated that he’d welcome other countries to invest in mining activities, including the US. I was watching Glenn Beck right now, and he pointed out that if we partnered w/ Russia on this, we could loosen the dependence Russia currently has on Beijing, and consequently Beijing’s stranglehold on Moscow
As for NATO, I saw the first US Senator Mike Lee to suggest that it is time we withdrew from NATO after a Norwegian company refused to refuel US Navy ships. The other major reason to bail out of NATO is that we currently pay 70% of their budget for something that is of little importance to us. Glenn Beck noted that Trump doesn’t necessarily want to pull out of NATO, but he sure doesn’t want us footing 70% of their budget. In fact, that is one of the strongest reasons to do it
In fact, I daresay that if the US pulled out of NATO, the Kremlin wouldn’t care whether or not Ukraine is a part of it, since we are no longer there to threaten them
Wellington says
With respect, Infidel, I don’t think the US withdrawing from NATO is a good idea. Yes, NATO is full of negatives, none more so than Turkey still being in it, but a withdrawal by the US from NATO would, quite arguably, send a signal to Putin, a mass killer as well as a colossal doofus, to even more so try to revive the old Soviet Union, the demise of which he himself called the greatest tragedy of the 20th century.
Put another way and briefly, whatever negatives exist by the US remaining in NATO are far outweighed by the US pulling out of NATO. I’m certain many would agree with me here, including Poles, Estonians, Latvians, Lithuanians, et al.
PacosMojo says
Sorry Wellington, Russia isn’t our problem anymore. If the Europeans truly believe Putin is the second coming of Stalin capable of resurrecting the old Soviet Empire (As If!), then they better start investing a whole lot more on their own national defense. The US needs to abandon Europe and start focusing more on China and Mexico, the latter posing the greatest threat to the average American citizen than all other US adversaries combined.
Wellington says
Abandon Europe, PacosMojo? Oh, good plan. Shrewd.
Moreover, Russia IS a problem. Any nation with more than a thousand nuclear warheads directed at America is, ipso facto, a problem for America.
I agree that both China and forever dysfunctional Mexico (too bad we didn’t take all of Mexico as President Polk wanted to do back in the late 1840s so by now you would have suburbs of Mexico City like New Pittsburgh and Smithville) are major problems but to assert that Russia isn’t America’s problem any longer makes no sense, though I do agree with you that the Euroweenies of Western Europe should quit being parasites and contribute far more to their own defense—as well as stopping the insane immigration by the millions of a people who adhere to a belief system in Islam which is utterly inimical to Western Civilization at its best and freest.
࿗Infidel࿘ says

I agree w/ PacosMojo above. We happen to foot 70% of NATO’s bill, but NATO is not relevant to our security interests. If Russia wanted to threaten us, they would have packed their Far Eastern provinces of Chukotka and Kamchatka w/ nukes, and aimed them everywhere from Alaska to California
President Trump raised a stink about NATO members not paying 5% of their GDP, but I suspect that even if they all did, it won’t come anywhere near even 50% of NATO’s budget. We have different threat vectors from when the Cold War was on, our #1 enemy being China. Our security footprint should be in Latin America, where Beijing has been making inroads, and in the Asia-Pacific/Indo-Pacific region, where Beijing is more belligerent than ever. Just a few days ago, they were doing naval exercises in the Tasman Sea, forcing air traffic b/w Australia and New Zealand to get diverted
I think Belarus is a good model of how a country can avoid getting devoured by the Kremlin. Ukraine was doing fine until 2014, when the Victoria Nulands and the Samantha Powers of the world decided to pull off the Orange Revolution there, forcing out a duly elected president, who balked at Ukraine joining the EU. If exiting the EU is a good idea for Britain, why would not joining it be a bad idea for Ukraine? Besides, given how this war has gone, worst of all exposing Russia as a paper tiger, having to import drones from Iran to continue their war, and losing Syria in the process, even Putin wouldn’t be stupid enough to attack Lithuania or Moldova, much as he might want a land bridge to Kaliningrad
The other thing to note is that after 1975, when President Nixon took advantage of the internecine rivalry b/w Krushchev and Mao, the US never had to take on a Moscow-Beijing alliance. Today, we are confronted w/ a Beijing-Moscow alliance, w/ both being far more lethal in terms of ballistic missiles, hypersonic missiles and so on. It’s good that finally Marco Rubio, who was a neocon until a few weeks ago, finally admitted in one of his interviews that we don’t want Russia to be so dependent on Beijing that even if it wants to ally w/ US, they can’t
The Soviets had global ambitions of world revolution: what Putin has is just his near abroad, and there too, he doesn’t do what he allegedly wishes. I recall years ago when he was contemplating a political union b/w Russia, Belarus and Serbia: to this day, it’s a non-event and Serbia is actually pretty neutral towards Russia. Nature abhors vacuums, and the question is – what is our interest in Russia not calling the shots around its neighborhood?
China, by contrast, has a policy called “tianxia” (meaning “all under heaven”), under which the Chinese Emperor was the only sovereign authority on earth. President Xi has combined that w/ his vision of global Maoism: unlike his predecessors, he is a true believer. He has been using Belt/Road to economically tie up the hands of as many countries in the world as possible: all muslim countries, most African countries and most recently, even a few Latin American countries, including traditional US allies like Colombia and Chile. That is where our attention needs to be. Let the EU – Ursala van der Leyen, Starmer, Merz, Macron, et al bother about whether Russia gaining “Novorossiya” is a threat to those countries
NATO ceased to be relevant in 1991, and ceased to be a force for good in 1999, when it bombed Belgrade, and later in 2011, when it bombed Gadaffi’s forces in Libya. It’s time that we pulled out of it. Or maybe offer Russia the chance to join, and w/ them, welcome in Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia and Armenia
James Lincoln says
Wellington,
At the very least, NATO needs a total reorganization:
There should be a mechanism created to expel NATO members that no longer hold traditional Western values, i.e. Turkey.
Continued membership should be contingent upon NATO countries paying their fair share, i.e. make protection contingent upon paid membership.
Wellington says
Thanks for your reply, Infidel. We’ll have to agree to disagree here. And I don’t think the Baltic nations, Poland, the Czech Republic, et al. would agree with you. As an example, America in NATO makes for the single best ally Poland has had in its over 1,000 year history—and the Poles know this full well.
On the matter of Belarus specifically, it confirms what George Kennan said long ago and that is that Russia looks upon its neighbors as vassals or enemies. Belarus is a good vassal of Russia and a nation like Poland does not want to be an obedient vassal of the Russian state.
Wellington says
I concur with your assessments, James, about NATO, including reorganization and NATO nations stepping up and paying more. But I am convinced that pulling out of NATO would absolutely delight Putin and I don’t want to delight Putin. Put another way, NATO is still relevant but it needs a “re-make.”
James Lincoln says
Wellington,
Thanks for your reply and additional information.

I agree to disagree. One thing I’d add – reading up a bit on George Kennan, he was opposed to NATO enlargement, as happened in the late 90s. His fears were that they’d worsen relations w/ Russia, as actually happened
Instead, had NATO co-opted Russia, it would have been a lot better off. If Turkey can still be a member, Russia is a lot more civilized than they are. Had Russia been included, Ukraine, Georgia, Belarus and Armenia all could have been members of NATO, and NATO could actually have done something useful, like preventing Turkey and Azerbaijan from grabbing Armenian territory

zelenski went, during biden’s pretense, to the U.N. and demanded that Americans give him more money, more weapons and support, and he said it with threats if America didn’t pony up.
Sitting with crossed arms, legs spread, and interrupting, then looking away, was all disrespectful.
He looked like a mafia thug.
Why has he not been questioned about how he spent the $350 billion America gave him?
࿗Infidel࿘ says
Over the weekend, I heard that he had been briefed by Senate Democrats and even some Neocon Republicans on how to deal w/ Trump. It was apparently on their advice that he did what he did. I know that he hasn’t been wearing suits for a while, which made sense in the first few days when the invasion started. But now, he has been living quite comfortably in Kyiv and everyone else in his delegation wears suits. There is no reason he has to go dressed casual all the time
I’m hoping that the US signs a minerals agreement w/ Russia, which actually has much more of the rare earths in question, whereas the ones in Ukraine, according to the CEO of a mining company that does this, are not yet verified to be the rare earths desired (Lithium, Cobalt, et al). We should do our rare earth deals according to our interests, not Ukraine’s
somehistory says
Thank you, Infidel. I too had read that the dems told him how to ‘deal’ with the President.
They wanted controversy, and for the President to look like a bully to the *poor* little guy just asking for help to get “peace.”
somehistory says
I think Mr. Trump is right. zelenski doesn’t want peace as long as he can use America as a weapon/tool against Russia.

“Peace at ANY price!” Where have I heard those infamous words before? From none other than Neville Chamberlain and his “associate” Edouard Daladier.
Chamberlain thought nothing of negotiating the future of Czechoslovakia in its absence. He was terrified of war and would rather surrender than resist illegal territorial claims. Hitler’s promises at Munich, that it was his last territorial demand, is as false as the delusional hope that Putin will be satisfied with his holdings in Eastern Ukraine.
The US, UK and Russia GUARANTEED Ukraine borders to induce Ukraine giving up one of the largest stockpiles of nuclear weapons in the world. If failing to honor that guarantee is good for Russia, it is also good for the US. Chamberlain said to Parliament that the CheckGerman dispute was an issue far away between people of whom we know little. Hitler took the Sudetenland and then the rest of Czechoslovakia to prove Chamberlain delusional.
Peace is not made by surrendering to tyrants. Nor is it made by surrendering lawfully possessed territory. Putin wants conquest, not peace and is willing to kill millions to get what he wants.

Ok you warmongering CHUMP, get your armchair backside up and book a flight to the front! I’m beyond tired of parasitic TRASH like yourself demanding that the US insert itself into every foreign conflict that’s taken place since the end of WWII. And the only plausibly positive result following nearly 80 years of US war mongering, trillions dollars wasted, and a million or so bodies sacrificed “Fir Fweedum!”? A South Korean peninsula that the US continues to defend to this day! Go rot somewhere else!

If there is peace Zelenski would have to have elections his grifting of foreign aid to buy mansions in other European cities ,South Florida might come to light., He might have to be held accountable for running a country instead of play acting. If he loses the elections he might end up in jail or worse as long as the war goes on he can jail people who speak out against him ,steal ,and run the country like a tinpot dictator .The great unchecked wash of billions of dollars going into his country in foreign aid might dry up .If America or other countries go there and develop mining and other industry ,he might be held accountable for how he runs his country .As long as the war goes on he can show up in other countries in his black ninja pajamas and ask for money to fight a war that is endless with millions dying ,when he runs out of his own people to throw into the meat grinder ,he can ask for young Americas to do the honor. Russia is no better ,but to get both sides to the table to end this before some “accident” or some “unforeseen” thing happens and we are all in WW111.

“It was great!” says Annie. I don’t think it was great. I think it was dismaying. Trump said he would end the Ukraine war as soon as he gets into office. Kamala Harris, his opponent, said that could only mean that he will surrender Ukraine to Putin. It looks like that is the case. Trump and Vance are turning against our own allies. France and Britain don’t know what we are doing. The US votes with North Korea in the UN to support Russia. I sure hope Trump knows what he’s doing because it doesn’t look like it.

So what exactly is our reason for potentially starting WWIII? If you recall, the US threw a fit in 1962 when the Soviets at the time had missile bases in Cuba, and that island is much farther from DC or New York than Kharkiv is from Moscow. You think that greenlighting Ukraine to, say, bomb Moscow is something that will be tolerated? So far, Russia has had to get people from ethnic minority regions to fight in this war, but once something like this happens, the Russian people en masse would happily join this effort, and would steamroll all of Ukraine, not just its coastline
