Daniel Davis was almost the Deputy Director of Intelligence for Mission Integration: “Anti-Israel commentator tapped as a deputy director of national intelligence,” by Marc Rod, Jewish Insider, March 12, 2025:
He criticized world leaders who, after the Iranian missile attack, called on Iran and its proxies to cease their attacks on Israel, adding, “How about condemning Israel for the highly provocative, illegal act of destroying another nation’s embassy? It’s like we’ve all gone mad…”
The Iranian facility in Damascus that Daniel Davis describes as an “embassy” was nothing of the sort. It was the headquarters of the Iranian Quds Force in Syria, on the outside disguised as a civilian building, a consulate. There were seven victims of Israel’s airstrike; not one was a civilian diplomat; all were high-ranking members of the IRGC, and included two generals. One of them was Mohammed Reza Zahedi, the head of Quds in Syria. Why is Davis so angry that Israel managed to kill all the senior commanders of the IRGC Quds force in Syria? Shouldn’t that outcome be cause for great satisfaction in the Western world, just as was America’s strike that killed the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps commander Qassem Soleimani in 2020 at Baghdad’s international airport? Why is Daniel Davis so interested in protecting the IRGC, and Iran, from attack?
Following Israel’s attack on Iran’s air defense systems in late 2024, Davis celebrated that the attack had been limited in scope and warned that a more substantial attack could have had “catastrophic” consequences for both the U.S. and Israel….
Davis perhaps doesn’t realize that the October 26, 2024 attack by Israel on Iran was a response to Iran’s launching of 180 ballistic missiles at Israel on October 1. Davis apparently is glad that the attack was “limited in scope,” but has perhaps forgotten that the Israeli waves of airstrikes destroyed almost all of Iran’s anti-missile defense systems, including the four S-300 batteries ringing Tehran, leaving Iran virtually defenseless against future airstrikes, destroyed a plant that made fuel for ballistic missiles, and flattened a secret nuclear research facility at Parchin. Not bad for a day’s work, and in making Iran more vulnerable to attack, the IAF was preparing the ground for a future attack on nuclear facilities by Israel with or without the participation of its ally, the United states.
And he said that the Houthis in Yemen are striking Israel “because you went after the Palestinian people in the Gaza strip,” adding that Israel will “have to come to some sort of political accommodation with the Houthis.”
No, Davis is wrong. He has forgotten that the Houthis have done far more than attempt to attack — quite unsuccessfully — Israel. They have launched drone and missile attacks on any ships that try to use the Red Sea, thus forcing ships going between Europe and Asia to avoid the Red Sea and instead are now forced to go around the Horn of Africa, and then up the west coast of Africa to ports in Europe. This makes the journey much longer and more expensive. And Egypt suffers greatly from the Houthi attacks on shipping, because the maritime traffic through the Suez Canal has gone way down, costing Egypt so far $7 billion in lost canal revenue.
What kind of “political accommodation” does Davis think is possible with the fanatical Houthis? The Trump administration — the very administration Daniel Davis will not be joining — has designated the Houthis as international terrorists. Does Daniel Davis disagree? He thinks Israel will have to come to an accommodation with the Houthis. Why should it? The Israelis have been able to shoot down almost all the Houthi drones and missiles launched at them, save for one missile that did manage to land, harmlessly, in Tel Aviv. Israel has conducted multiple airstrikes targeting Houthi-controlled infrastructure in Yemen, including ports, oil facilities, and the airport in the capital, Sanaa. The United States and the U.K. have also engaged in military actions against the Houthis. In December 2024, U.S. forces carried out precision strikes in Yemen following attacks on American warships and commercial vessels in the Red Sea. It’s not Israel that needs to seek accommodation; it’s the Houthis who, if they resume fighting after the ceasefire in Gaza ends, will soon be silenced by Israeli and American airstrikes that can devastate Houthi ports, the airport in the capital, Sanaa, and the handful of military bases that are still usable. Among those hoping the Houthis will be crushed are two Arab states. One is Saudi Arabia, whose oil facilities have been attacked by the Houthis; the other is the United Arab Emirates.
We know that Daniel Davis cannot stand the embattled state of Israel, and wishes it ill. But must he be so hellbent on protecting from Israeli attack Hamas, the Houthis, and Iran which, after all, are also the sworn enemies of America?
