Canada: Front-runner to replace Trudeau as Liberal leader says UK nukes can protect country from Trump

Canada is a founding member of NATO.  Three of NATO’s members are nuclear states: France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Chrystia Freeland thinks that Canada may need the UK’s nuclear weapons to fight off America. This is just the kind of bizarre rhetoric that appeals to fear mongering leftists.

Think for a moment what would happen if nukes were brought into the picture where two countries share a land mass. Seriously suggesting such lunacy should disqualify Freeland from any consideration as prime minister. Already, Trump is wondering what’s going on in Canada with the Liberals:

Canada should seek closer ties with Britain because its nuclear weapons can help protect the country against Donald Trump, a Liberal party leader running to replace Justin Trudeau has said.

Chrystia Freeland, the former deputy prime minister under Mr Trudeau, said that US president is “clearly threatening our sovereignty” with his campaign to absorb Canada as the 51st state of America.

In order to “guarantee our security”, Ms Freeland said she would build closer security partnerships with European Nato allies and “I would be sure that France and Britain were there, who possess nuclear weapons”.

“I would be working urgently with those partners to build a closer security relationship… in a time when the United States can be a threat,” said the ex-foreign minister and finance minister at the final Liberal leadership debate last week.

The Liberal party has overtaken the Conservatives in the polls for the first time since 2021, surging on a backlash to Mr Trump and his mockery of Mr Trudeau as merely “Governor” of Canada.

Ms Freeland is running second in the race to Mark Carney, the former governor of the Bank of England….

Much as I think that Trump stands head and shoulders above the O, Shrillary Shroooo, Zhou Baideng (周拜邓–Joe who worships Deng [for what Biden said on occasion about what he’d like to do to his opposition), and Kamala Harris, I am bothered at Trump’s reckless speech towards allies. I am not fond of either Trudeau–Pere or Fils–but I believe the tariff on Canadian goods will be self-defeating. Were Trump truly trying to keep Putin from being backed into a corner, and only trying to get Europe to pony up for its own defense, I’d be more understanding of his stance on Ukraine. But, while I am positive that a continuance of Obama-ism in a Harris presidency would probably have invited a world war launched simultaneously in eastern Europe and the Pacific Rim, I am still bothered by Trump’s recent behavior.

          I remember how in the 80s, there used to be demonstrations at Greenham Commons and other places by Greenpeace and other peaceniks protesting nuke bases. Today, I’d say they’d have a point, for a couple of reasons

          Once upon a time, I made some good friends with people who came down (for the warmth of Florida sunshine) from Canada. They were all very nice. One spoke French and was helping me with pronunciation.
          Some of the most beautiful scenery in movies was filmed in Canada.

I like most of his policies but Trump covets Canada and in my opinion sounds more and more like Putin every day. Who knows what this man is capable of. And China and Russia are not our friends. Might is right. Nuclear weapons are a deterrent and of course this is based on the principle of mutual destruction. And neighbours France and the UK have nuclear weapons; and so the precedent is set.

    Pierre Poilievre seems to be the most level-headed possible Trudeau successor yet Canada may decide that its liberalism can be maintained without trade with the US and test if it’s real or a delusion.

    Frankly, everything possible should be done to control the border for both drugs and illegal immigration, with or without Canadian agreement.

  8. Chrystia Freeland is not the front runner in the race to succeed Justin Trudeau. That’s why none of the Conservative Party’s attack ads are about her. And since nuclear weapons do exist, and since the United States has them, Donald Trump’s musings about taking over Canada and Greenland (and he has publicly considered using a measure of force as encouragement with the latter) would seem to make it not all that crazy to observe that friendship with a nuclear power might be in Canada’s interest.

    If anyone doesn’t like Chrystia Freeland suggesting that particular fact, maybe they should be complaining about the U.S President, and not Canadian politicians who don’t know what to expect next in their country’s relationship with its southern neighbour, the foreign policy of which now entails having presidential lips firmly planted on the backside of the murdering dictator in Moscow.

I do believe that people should have a choice so if segments of Canada willing desire to join the USA that is ok with me. No Canadian crazes though. That is out of the question. The UK has 2 SSNs and 4 SSBNs. The USA has 53 SSNs and 14 SSBNs as well as 4 SSGNs. Canada has none of the above. When will Canada grow up and stop looking to the not so big brother in the UK for what they need?

  14. The USA has never attacked Canada but Canada did participate with the UK in the attack on America in the war of 1812.

    • From what I remember, Canada wasn’t an independent country in 1812. It was Britain waging a war on the US from Canada, which at that time was as much a part of Britain as Greenland is of Denmark today. That said, 7 years or so ago, it was funny when Trump reportedly asked Trudeau whether or not his country had burned down the White House 😈

Regarding Greenland, the Dutch have treated the people of that island like a red headed stepchild. The Dutch today have give themselves over to the muslims. Those people in Greenland deserve a choice. I am all for what the Greenland people want. They would increase their status and have a voice in their future by joining the USA as a territory with the same rights of the territory of Guam.

  17. Things are so wonderful in Canada under Justine, Twitchy Freeland, Mark Carney and NDP Singh who has kept this minority group of Schwab’s clowns in power, that over 81,000 Canadians have left this country in the last year.

    The new not elected PM will be Klaus Schwab’s boy, Mark Carney. I am not totally sure we will have an election, but if we do, the Liberal Party deserves no party status.

Carney says sometimes you have to plant fear — I do fear him. One World Government should not be allowed to run for any municipal on government, and they should have to pass a grade five science test.

        Peoplekind, plants, tress, grass …………………….all need carbon to live. If anything these climate clowns are causing damage to OUR earth. Happy to see some states, Florida recently banning geoengineering.

Incidentally, if he was a governor of the Bank of England (UK’s equivalent of the Federal Reserve), how does that qualify him to be a leader of Canada? Is the latter still an overseas province of Britain? If yes, how is it worse than being our 51st state?

      I liked President Trump wondering when Canada would have their elections, and thinking that Trudeau was trying to use this tariffs issue to whip up support for his party. Speaking of which, when is the elections? Trudeau is making pretty major decisions w/o parliament, which borders unconstitutional – although I confess I don’t know how strictly that’s followed in Canada. The sooner Canada has an election and elects either Poilievre or Bernier, the better for them as far as the US goes

      • You got that right Infidel. The NDP far left, leader Jagmeet Singh aka Jimmy Dalliwal, said he would vote to bring down the government, suddenly says he cannot / will not. The guy who has kept this minority in power has changed his tune again (and perhaps working on a second pension ).

        At the risk of sounding terribly crude, methinks Canada is screwed.

        Tomorrow the Liberals pick their new leader — already there are possibly up to 2/3 not eligible to vote (against Carney) LOL what a bloody joke.         Thank you. I heard Dan Bordman say a few weeks ago that the reason Jagmeet Singh was backing Trudeau until March was that he wanted his pension eligibility to mature, which wouldn’t happen if the parliament dissolved before that and if he wasn’t re-elected

        I know about how countries like Australia, Canada, New Zealand and a few others are still members of the “Realm”, but it still beats me how someone who was the governor of the Bank of England could suddenly qualify to be a leader of Canada. Are all Canadians Brits, or are all Brits Canadians?
