Freedom Center Investigates has lately been covering abuses at the Voice of America including attacking Front Page Magazine as “Islamophobic,” running Taliban attacks on Trump and employing an Afghan ex-jihadist who had fought in a Jihadist group under Osama bin Laden’s mentor to attack Trump.

Now the end is near.

After our reporting, all employees at the VOA have been placed on administrative leave and many of the affairs of the Agency of Global Affairs Media are being wound down. I have mixed feelings about this. There was a time when we broadcast a true voice of freedom, but increasingly we are funding media outlets that, like most media outlets, are hostile to America and the cause of freedom. I’ve heard terrible things about the Persian language VOA being infiltrated by Iran regime supporters. And the VOA’s decision to push anti-Trump propaganda on Americans was a profound violation of its charter and mission.

I believe America should have a “voice” to represent our message abroad, but the current system that was set up during the Cold War may no longer be salvageable. Anything infected by the media is simply a dead end.

Our investigation of USAID and VOA showed how bad the rot was.

USAID provided funding to set up a Mujahadeen propaganda network known as the Afghan Media Resource Center. The terror media network, which reportedly required all personnel to “sacrifice for holy jihad”, operated under the auspices of the United States Information Agency (USIA): the parent organization of Voice of America.

One of the points I made in my reporting on VOA’s growing extremism was that Democrats had repeatedly pushed it to report critically on the United States.

President John F. Kennedy had told Voice of America staffers that their mission was to “paint us ‘with all our blemishes and warts,’ all those things about us that may not be immediately attractive.” Taxpayers should not be paying to have an arm of the government telling the rest of the world that America is a terrible place. And certainly not sending that message to Americans.

  3. VOA is total garbage and been so for the last 50 years to my personal observation. It should be pro america. No lies but push what’s good about america. Don’t need to push the bad but don’t hide it or lie about it. Is basically anti america. For a big country like america, it’s reach is tiny compared to the BBC out of the dead British empire. The BBC is also garbage but once was reasonably good.

  5. Democrats are squealing like stuck pigs because all of these groups, agencies, bureaucracies, are democrat jobs programs. Taxpayer funded entities should not be linked to one political party. That is the opposite of equal representation.

  6. Like NATO, the VOA should have wound up long ago – in 1994. Hopefully, it’s the start of winding up Cold War era institutions whose raison d’être hasn’t been there for at least decades. And even if it was, technology has made it as obsolete as the telegraph and the typewriter

  8. What about satellite television which is beamed into the ME? I believe that the USA needs to make available information from a reasoned perspective (currently there is “Al-Hurra” news, which is by USAGM).
    I don’t know a single person here who listens to shortwave. But virtually EVERYONE is watching satellite TV (there are at least 1000 channels, typically).

    Without a US voice, these viewers will be left to get their news from: ME regime-sponsored news, Al-Jazeera, RT (Russia), TRT (Turkey), CNN, BBC, France24, CGTN (China), and a few others. Who can be trusted to provide the truth?

    I think it would be better to clean up VOA–restore it to what is was for years, a truthful outlet for freedom and democracy, rather than shut it down and let these thugs win in having infiltrated and destroyed its purpose.

    • I get your point, but seriously, how many people listen to radio? A lot of them are now in the form of podcasts, and can be accessed worldwide on various platforms – YouTube, Spotify, Apple podcasts,…. Also, if somebody in Lesotho (to use the latest example of a country most Americans have never heard of) is scanning for information, VOA is the last thing likely to be on his interest span

      VOA made sense during the Cold War in Eastern Europe and other countries, when only radio and free-to-air TV existed, and there wasn’t many channels. Once the Cold War ended and all those countries started getting a plethora of channels, it should have been clear that VOA wasn’t gonna retain its traction: it was sort of a PBS for foreigners w/ very curated tastes

  10. VOA has run its course and is no longer relevant. Shutting it down will save the tax payers millions and hardly no one will miss it.

  11. RE: paint us ‘with all our blemishes and warts,’ We are more than just warts and blemishes which is the problem with the current and past rhetoric on VOA. There needs to be why America is the greatest. Otherwise just review Obama’s “we are not an exceptional country” speeches. I agree we should have a voice to project our goodness and exceptionalism, how we overcome our flaws.
