One major shortcoming I found about either her, or her country’s movement: in response to the question about achieving her goals, her only focus was on diplomatic, as well as public awareness. However, there was nothing there about any armed militia. They may think that the world is more appreciative of peaceful movements, but the evidence is strongly on the other side. What gains have the Yazidis, Kurds, Tibetans, Balochis, Bangladesh Hindus et al had by just raising public awareness?
They need to start w/ a militia, and that too, a well armed one. Get one that starts in one place, and then expands. Biafra is ~ 30,000 square miles, so start in one area w/ a dense militia, and start taking over land. After securing enough territory, then declare independence, have first a standing army and then other things like a currency, localized infrastructure, car license plates.
One good model to base after would be the secessionist republic of Transnistria. They were Russians who didn’t like Moldova’s plans to join Romania, even though that never materialized (although it’s said to be the subject of conversation b/w those 2 countries). Transnistria is a fully functional, independent country, w/ its own government, legislature, military, police, currency and vehicle registration. It’s government has also adapted a constitution, flag, national anthem and coat of arms. It’s only disadvantage is that it’s sandwiched b/w Ukraine and Moldova, and so its access to the Black Sea and to the outside world is completely dependent on one of those two. In fact, now Moldova, since Ukraine has cut it off due to the war, and also b’cos the Pridnestrovian Moldovian Republic is pro-Moscow, despite not being recognized by the Kremlin
Unlike Pridnestrovia, Biafra has a coast on the Atlantic, and absent a blockade from the Nigerian Navy, it could easily have a merchant navy that can trade w/ other countries. Their first priority should be a militia, then a military, and then let all the others follow.
One thing that struck me was calling the country the “United States of Biafra”: does that imply that that country is modeling itself after the US? Also, in the interview, did she say that Biafra would have 40 states? That sounds a lot for a country that small: in fact, the last thing that I think about Biafra is a federation. But if they are thinking about “United States” as a constitutional republic w/ a strong rule of law, second amendment etc, then they’re on the right track
Finally, if Biafra is just a Christian secessionist movement and there isn’t a separate Biafran ethnicity from mainstream Nigerian, then they should claim other Christian areas in South Nigeria, including Lagos. Let Nigeria be landlocked, w/ just its north. In fact, some of these countries, given their low populations in the midst of the Sahara, should just merge – Nigeria, Niger, Mali, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Senagal, Gambia. The plight of Biafra was once of the first ones I became aware of (I am in my mid-60s). Nigeria is carrying out a full genocide of Christians there. That other nations–supposedly civilized like Finland–are arresting Biafrans is insame. And like Robert Spencer, I hope that they are not weakened by any infighting.
