UK: Court rules that Christian preacher was lawfully arrested and jailed for holding Islamocritical sign

What do you think? If Ian Sleeper had been an imam holding a sign that said “Ban Christianity,” would authorities have arrested and detained him?

Note that Mr. Justice Sweeting says that Sleeper was detained because of “a risk of harm eventuating to (Mr Sleeper) himself” as well as “risk to ‘other persons’ as a result of public disorder.”

In other words, authorities in shattered, staggering, dhimmi Britain were afraid Muslims would riot if Sleeper remained on the streets with his sign. Britain, as is more obvious by the day, is finished.

A Christian preacher arrested outside a London cathedral with a placard saying “Love Muslims, Ban Islam, the Religion of Terror” has lost a legal claim that he was unlawfully detained by police.

Ian Sleeper was arrested on suspicion of a religiously aggravated public order offence after the incident outside Southwark Cathedral on June 23, 2017.

He staged the protest a few weeks after the London Bridge terror attack, when three Islamic State-inspired extremists killed eight people and injured 48 others in a van and knife rampage through the streets.

Earlier that year, a terrorist carried out an attack on Westminster Bridge, killing five, an Islamophobic van driver killed a Muslim man outside Finsbury Park Mosque, and a suicide bomber took 22 lives at Manchester Arena after an Ariana Grande concert.

Mr Sleeper, 57, was in possession of two signs when he was arrested – one stating “#Love Muslims, Hate Islam, Jesus is Love + Hope” and the other reading: “Love Muslims, Ban Islam, the Religion of Terror”.

The Metropolitan Police defended the rights of officers to intervene and shut down the protest, in the “febrile“ aftermath of a series of terrorist attacks.

He was held in custody by the Metropolitan Police for more than 12 hours before being released on bail, and two months later he was told there would be no criminal charges.

Mr Sleeper, an evangelical Christian preacher, sued Scotland Yard, claiming false arrest, false imprisonment and breach of human rights.

After losing the initial legal battle, he took his case to the High Court, arguing his right to protest had been unlawfully blocked.

But Mr Justice Sweeting ruled on Tuesday that Mr Sleeper’s human rights had not been breached by his detention, and police had a case that his arrest was “necessary”.

“The basis for arrest was not confined to the possibility of a risk of harm eventuating to (Mr Sleeper) himself but extended to the risk to ‘other persons’ as a result of public disorder”, the judge noted.

He backed the conclusion that “the arrest and detention…was lawful.”…

    • Robert Spencer regularly criticizes the US when it is warranted. Unlike John Allan, he actally cares about the civilized legacy of Britain and the US. But so long as no one is allowed to comment on Britain’s sad slide, he seems to be just fine with it. Just appalling.

      • More precisely, Robert Spencer focuses on and condemns jihad activity everywhere, not just in the US or Britain or Israel or any one particular country. What could be fairer than that?

      Whilst the majority of UK folks are fearful for the safety of their daughters, or fearful being beaten, spat at, or humiliated by one of the many active sharia patrols that have taken control of many town/city streets, you choose to be petty. How disgusting.

      Whilst my church & other places of non muslim worship are regularly vandalised by muslim thugs & sunday morning worshippers are greeted with jihadist chants & insults, you stick your head in the sand. Coward.

    The only time a *mozlum* is identified is when it (sic) was a victim. And the victims of the **murderous mozlums** are not identified. The report can say mozlum when it’s the victim, but not when it’s the “terrorist,” and the “suicide bomber.”

    Evidently, the van driver was not *afraid* of mozlums as the report implies with the ‘phobic’ label.

    The judge and the police in this case, know who is in control in their country. And it isn’t the average Brit.

  7. A Christian preacher being arrested and jailed for holding up a sign what only has the truth printed on it is an affront to free speech in what is supposed to be a free country is outrageous and outright wrong.

    This is terrible . This is also another example of the infiltration and influence of the stealth jihadists Muslims in the government of the United Kingdom. This should also serve an example to citizens of other Western nations to be aware informed knowledgeable about the insidious sway those Muslims with their stealth jihad can have to the extent of severely limiting the right of freedom of speech.

It’s over not just for Britain but for the Western world unless something very major happens. I hope Trump is that catalyst for deep profound change but I don’t think he is. I don’t think he can the damage is too severe and long standing. Oligarchical system has developed from your Republic and our democracies and has degenerated even from that low state to tyranny.   10. The first thing people need to learn is that ISLAM is NOT a religion. It is a theocracy, a government with a religious component. It is rooted in violence and depravity. The god (allah – al ilah) of Islam is the moon god Hubal, who is chief god of a pantheon of 360 gods, goddesses, and spirits. People should read the Qur’an. The ISBN of a translation of the Qur’an with the Arabic and English is 978-0-913321-01-0. Keep in mind the books of the Qur’an are ordered longest shortest, not in the order written. The war Mohammad started in Arabia in the 600s has not stopped.

  15. This appears to be an absolutely ludicrous decision by a so called Judge once again to protect Islam

    It would be useful to know what specific Public Order offence under British Law he was arrested.
    1. In terms of a defence :
    Section 29 J Public Order Act 1986 protects freedom of expression in relation to religious belief. In addition to the discussion, criticism of expression of dislike and the protection.for people urging others to change their belief, there is specific PROTECTION for language or conduct which RIDICULES, INSULTS or ABUSES either a religion or religious practices.

    This concept of this is that it is OK to criticise the Religion but not to channel hate against its followers.

    I cannot see that Mr Sleeper with his signs did anything unlawful.

    2. Police in Britain have powers to arrest where a Breach of the Peace is likely to occur. The essential eliminate for this is that ” harm” is happening or likely to happen to a person – and the person arrested should be ithe one that is being violent or threatening violence.

    Mr Sleeper was not violent.

    A “Breach of the Peace” arrest is a common law power which is a preventative measure and is not something that is a criminal offence and the person arrested must be released as soon as possible after the incident is over – or taken before a court which can impose on him the requirement to be of good behaviour for a period in the future

    3. A British Police officer has not right to prevent the lawful conduct of a citizen except where that conduct interferes with the lawful rights of others which could provoke them to violence.
    It is however those that threaten that violence that should be targeted by police.

    I can’t see how Mr Sleeper was lawfully arrested and detained in the first place and how the Judge could justify his decision.

      Seems like a “breach of the peace” is enforced at the discretion of the British police – but never against muslims.
