US President Donald Trump’s administration will support Israel in maintaining a buffer zone in Syria for years to come, The Jerusalem Post has learned.
Although the EU and UN are making significant progress in normalizing relations with the new Syrian regime of Ahmed al-Sharaa, including at a major summit in Paris on Thursday, the Jewish state is confident that the Trump administration understands Jerusalem’s concerns that the new regime could be a “wolf in sheep’s clothing.”…
Israel is naturally wary of the new regime in Syria. Ahmed al-Sharaa has assured the West that he, and the group he heads — Hayat Tahrir al-Sham — long ago parted ways with Al Qaeda and ISIS. He has not made any bellicose threats against Israel. Asked whether he could imagine normalizing ties with Israel, al-Sharaa said “we want peace with all parties,” but it was a sensitive issue because of the IDF base on the Syrian side of the Golan.
Perhaps al-Sharaa will turn out to be not a jihadi, but rather, a Syrian nationalist, eager to obtain American recognition, a lifting of the sanctions that had been placed on Syria when Assad’s regime was in power, and even, possibly, obtaining some American weaponry. But Israel has to be very sure of what his new regime’s attitude toward the Jewish state will be, and meanwhile, the IDF wants to make sure that it can meet any threat of a Syrian attack, which is why it now has taken control of the buffer zone in the Golan, and the summit of Mount Hermon. And now the Trump administration has made clear that it understands Israel’s wariness, and approves of its holding onto — for several years — the Syrian side of the Golan.
Meanwhile, IDF troops may remain in Jenin even several months after the more intense part of the current operation in the West Bank concludes, sources said.
The IDF has changed its tactics in Judea and Samaria. Instead of conducting sweeps to kill or capture terrorists after they have attacked Israelis, and then withdrawing from the area, the IDF intends to remain in these areas in order to destroy early on any potential terrorists before they can act.
Here, too, the Trump administration has expressed no objection to the muscular operations and preemptive strikes being carried out in Jenin by the IDF, nor to the IDF’s stated intention to remain in the area.
Regarding Lebanon, sources were adamant that the IDF will maintain a presence in five key defensive positions on the Israel-Lebanon border even after the February 18 extended deadline for the IDF to withdraw from southern Lebanon….
The IDF insists it will remain inside Lebanon at five key positions, in order to continue to monitor Hezbollah, so as to ensure that it pulls completely out of the area south of the Litani River. The Americans support this effort and apparently so does the government of Lebanon, though officially it denies doing so. The new Lebanese president, the Maronite Joseph Aoun, is a sworn enemy of Hezbollah.
What a difference the Trump administration has made. It has expressed quiet support for the IDF’s intention to continue to hold onto the Syrian side of the Golan and the summit of Mt. Hermon “for years,” until Israel is satisfied that there is no credible threat from the new regime in Syria. In Judea and Samaria, the IDF’s determination to remain permanently in the area, instead of arresting or killing wanted terrorists and then pulling back, only to have to repeat the operation after every subsequent terror attack, has the full backing of the Trump administration as well. And we may soon find out that the Trump administration will publicly back Israel’s determination to hold onto all of Judea and Samaria, while allowing the local Arabs as much autonomy as is consonant with Israel’s security. In Netanyahu’s words, “The Palestinians should have all the powers to govern themselves, but none of the powers to threaten our lives, which means that security, in whatever political arrangements we’ll have, realistically will have to remain in Israel’s hands.” For the Trump administration, as for the Israelis, it is clear that the so-called “two-state solution” is dead.
There must surely be despair in Damascus, in the Hezbollah neighborhoods in southern Beirut, and in Ramallah, that Trump has turned out to be all that the Israelis could have wished for.

What we have learned throughout history is that Moslems are patient. This goes for Syria, Lebanon, Iran, or Gaza. Trump will be here for the next 4 years, God willing, and then he’s out. So don’t get your hopes up too high.

Princess, I think you’ve forgotten that after hundreds of years of conquest, the Arabs and then Ottoman Turks degenerated into nothings. It took a long time, but the Moors, Arabs and Berbers, after invading Spain and Portugal were defeated and thrown out.
The Turks after a wave of conquests over-ran Arabia and ruled both it and parts of Eastern Europe. They never fully succeeded against Poland and Lithuania The large Ottoman Empire army in 1683 got thrashed outside Vienna by a Crusader Army led by Polish king Jan Sobieski.
After that in a series of battles the Ottoman Turks got soundly thrashed by the Holy Roman Empire and Austrian Habsburg dynasty army led by Field Marshall Eugene of Savoy. They then withdrew from Eastern Europe and declined into the ‘sick man of Europe’. In WW2 the British and Bedouin Army of Lawrence of Arabia drove the Turks out of Arabia and the Holy Land.

Nato Sultan, not very clever are you? Turkey has been a treacherous member of NATO since 1952. And Sultan Erdogan’s army was not particularly brave, it got al-Qaeda Muslim savages to beat Bashar Assad’s worn-out army, so not much of an achievement.
