In November 2022, I wrote this at Jihad Watch: Turkey dealing with both Russia and Ukraine, using the war as an opportunity to expand its regional influence:
Turkey is expanding its influence while bullying Greece in the process, to the point of widespread fears of an outbreak of war between two NATO members. Yet no NATO member, or any country, for that matter, is holding Erdogan to any standard of accountability. Last month, Erdogan held further talks with Putin in order to deepen ties with Russia, and completely disregarded NATO’s concerns. Erdogan has stated his intention of reviving the Ottoman Empire, and has even revealed a “map of ‘Greater Turkey’ that goes back to the era of the Seljuk Empire and its defeat of the Byzantine Empire in the 1071 Battle of Manzikert.” His ambitions are being facilitated by NATO and the EU. As a global shift is rapidly taking place, America is missing in action, thanks to Joe Biden and his America-Last administration.
“Despite Greece’s concerns, several EU countries are moving ahead with arms sales with Turkey.” They include Italy and Spain.
A more immediate issue, however, involves the Kurds. Turkey and the new Syrian jihadist leadership, Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS), are demanding “the removal of elements within the Syrian Democratic Forces linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) – who have fought for Kurdish autonomy in Turkey since 1984.” The Syrian Democratic Forces have been staunch allies of the US and fought side by side with American forces against ISIS in the region. Now Turkey is threatening that it will mount an offensive against the Kurds if its demands aren’t met.
Erdogan’s ambitions are relentless. To arm Turkey would be to empower an attack on the Kurds, further expand Erdogan’s regional power, and ultimately to aid in Turkey’s supremacist expansion globally. Yet, members of NATO’s military alliance must spend at least 2% of their country’s GDP on defense per year. Turkey should have long been expelled from NATO and marginalized by the West.
The French say that the UK is actually spearheading this deal. The UK under the far-left Labour Party is dangerous. The French revealed that the UK is leading these talks in an attempt to “ease” Greece’s concerns. That is no reason for “ease,” but for alarm.

Shameful that Greece is forced into ‘fiercely lobbying France’ not to further arm Turkey. Macron, Starmer, Merkel, Meloni, Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón, and even Trump (who turned a blind eye when Turkish thugs attacked US citizens on US soil) deal far too openly and leniently with Erdogan. I’d like them to come clean as to ALL of their reasons. For all their noise about Putin, I’ve long thought Erdogan is far more dangerous.
