Mankind was created to be a family of humans. Due to the introduction of sin, when men became numerous, they were abusive to their neighbors. Indeed, even before that, Cain murdered his own brother, Abel.
When the violence because so bad that Noah and his family were in danger, God rescued them by bringing a flood that wiped out the majority of mankind. He then gave the promise of a rainbow; a promise that there would never be another flood to wipe out almost all life on earth.
The Tower of Babel was being built so the people building it would survive a flood…they didn’t put faith in God’s promise…and to “make a name for themselves.” God then looked down and said that ‘there is nothing that man can’t do being of one language,’ so He gave various ones different languages so they could no longer all work together to build the Tower.
They then dispersed across the earth and became different ‘nations’ with different ‘tongues.’ But that was not the original way it was meant to be. Mankind was meant to ‘disperse’ but would have still been able to communicate with each other, had they not built the Tower.
Now, today, with the internet and the translations people can do, different languages are not so much of a barrier to men ‘making a name for themselves’ and defying God.
