Donald Trump may be the funniest president we have ever had, but sometimes it’s hard to tell whether or not he is serious. One of the most notorious examples of this are his repeated declarations that Canada should become the fifty-first state of the United States. At first, the entire world assumed that Trump was simply needling Canada’s far-left Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over his country’s weakness and dependence on its neighbor to the south. But now Trudeau has been caught on an open mic saying that Trump was completely serious. He wants to add Canada to the United States of America.
Fox News reported Saturday that “in a closed-door meeting with Canadian business and labor leaders, Trudeau reportedly affirmed that Trump’s ambitious aims of annexation are ‘a real thing.’” Trudeau added: “Mr. Trump has it in mind that the easiest way to do it is absorbing our country and it is a real thing. In my conversations with him on …”
At that point, however, “the microphone cut out,” and we’re apparently lucky that we got even that much, for “the news media had been asked to leave the room before Trudeau delivered his comments, but CBC and The Toronto Star were able to hear them and record them.”
Trudeau offered his own spin on why Trump is pursuing this idea, saying: “I suggest that not only does the Trump administration know how many critical minerals we have, but that may be even why they keep talking about absorbing us and making us the 51st state. They’re very aware of our resources, of what we have, and they very much want to be able to benefit from those.”
Gil McGowan of the Alberta Federation of Labor, who was present at the meeting, agreed: “Yes, I can confirm that Trudeau said his assessment is that what Trump really wants is not action on fentanyl or immigration or even the trade deficit, what he really wants is to either dominate Canada or take it outright. Tariffs are a tactic towards that end.”
That may indeed be all there is to it, but McGowan, as well as the callow and vapid authoritarian Trudeau, would have done well also to consider the possibility that Trump is concerned about Chinese encroachment in Canada. Canada’s Global News reported in Oct. 2024 that “Canadian diplomats have quietly but frequently raising concerns over foreign interference and surveillance with their Chinese counterparts over the past two years, newly-released documents show. A document published by the foreign interference commission Friday shows a total of 48 ‘representations’ to People’s Republic of China (PRC) officials since September 2022. The general topic of ‘foreign interference’ has been raised 31 times in total, including four formal diplomatic letters.”

Agreed. It’s an easy out for Trudeau with all his destructive behavior to tell the world that’s not it at all, it’s just that Trump is a greedy dictator. So much easier for Trudeau than having to admit what he’s done.

Just adding Canada as a single state would be a ridiculous move from a Republican administration, just like the addition of either Puerto Rico or DC would be. You would then have one more solid Blue state, like California or Hawaii, meaning 2 more Dem senators, more Dem than GOP House members

No, I think he may be more like a Stephen Harper. Ideally, I’d like someone like Maxime Bernier of the People’s Party of Canada (no, it ain’t a communist party, despite its name), but I’m not the one who elects Canadian leaders. So we’ll just have to make do w/ Poilievre. If he just keeps China out of his country, as well as cracks down on illegal immigration, that will be adequate

Not true, you would have Western Canada as mostly Republican and Easter Canada as a dumbocrartic.state. If you deported Quebec back to France you’d have another Republican state. You don’t want the money sucking French problem anywhere near the states, They have been sucking money out of the West and in particular Alberta so long they just assume it was part of the deal on confederation, they’d become a welfare state. Oh they already are a wefare state . Then you’d have send in the military just to make them speak English…Deport

I remember years ago, Hugh Fitzgerald suggesting that Quebec take in French speaking Lebanese, Barbers and other non-muslims from outside France who were fleeing muslim repression, instead of muslims from, say, Algeria. If Quebec could do all that, they could be a fine neighbor

States to the US have been historically admitted in pairs. With that said, I liked it in the good old days when if I wanted to go to Canada for any reason, I drove to the Canadian border, showed my New York State driver’s license and asked by Canadian customs the purpose of my visit, and was told to have a nice trip and waved through. In contrast, on the trip back, the US customs officials, in a condescending tone, asked me what I purchased in Canada, and if I had anything to declare such as whiskey, beer or anything else of value in my car. They asked me to open the trunk, and the back doors of the car. They took a peek, saw some X-country skis, and then eventually waved me through.
Before Trudeau I or Trudeau Ii, Canada was just like the United States, except people were a lot friendlier and they said “eh” a lot. And the people in Quebec (except for Montreal) spoke only French. Turn the clock back, and we don’t need Canada as a state.

Maybe Greenland will beat them as the 51st state, I understand they have an Independence vote in March and after that will be able to negotiate with Trump. With all the opportunities Trump will open up for them they may just vote that. We live in interesting times. Canada can always be 52nd State

It could be a hell of a fight. With all the hardcore socialist in the cities and so many in the East preferring the Chinese style of government Trudeau has brought to Canada communism. You’d have your hands full.
You’d probably need a whole lot of priests to preform the exorcisms or better yet deport them all along with all those democrats down there and we’d have utopia.
The problem would be, who would take them? I’m pretty sure the Chinese would say m’ei y’ou, and it wouldn’t be fare to put our problem on the Russians. That leaves North Korea or the new found state of Greenland. There’s only forty some thousand brave souls on that God forsaken Island they could handle it. I don’t know that’s why we have Trump, to make all the hard decisions

The facts in this story are irrefutable. True, Pres. Trump may say he wants to invade “annex” Canada but then he would have another California and most of the Blue States voting for a a “Woke” agenda and he’d be kicked out of office el pronto, unfortunately for his neo-Ottoman, sorry, meant neo-Con dreams. .
It’s true that Canada should try to stop dealing with Communist China and Trump should impose on these authoritarian regime’s “leaders” a 35% tariffs but it was the American Corporations that were allowed by both Republican and Democratic governments to send their Labour to China for cheaper labour costs. It’s a bit too late to reverse the trend by “invading” Canada or by imposing heavy-duty tariffs as the global economy is so integrated, worse than a Gordian knot, and he’ll soon become aware of the inflationary effect that is going to impoverish Americans further.
The workers in most industries in the states bordering with Canada will be thunderstruck and declare bankruptcy if these tariffs take place on goods across the border. It’s not Fentalyn, it’s not illegal migration (plenty in both U.S. and Canada) but the need to pay off the $33Trilion debt. The trade imbalances are not much in favour of Canada and they rae healthy proportionally.
Another thing to bear in mind, that “boots on the ground” may be necessary if Trump really wants to “annex” Canada as most of them have National Healthcare, unlike the U.S. where we have 30 Million Americans without Medical insurance. In Canada, the “middle men”, Insurance companies, do not take a a “commission” for referrals to physicians and specialists as it is a Single Payer system. So you show your Provincial health card, and not your Visa when you need medical help for anything.
In the U.S., unfortunately, 62% of all personal Bankruptcies are due to inability of citizens (those holoi polloi uninsured) to pay their medical and Hospital bills. Don’t think Canadians would be willing to give up their country to their temporary “greedy” neighbor any more than the U.S. would be For Sale to China!
Alan Alda (President of U.S.) and John Candy (American maga) starred in a great movie (documentary now?) called “CANADIAN BACON” on the “invasion” of Canada by the U.S. Great fun watching and highly recommended these days of “unfriendly takeovers”! You’ll love it.

Just as the Dems have transformed from a Center-Left to a Race+Sexuality obsessed Corporateist Marxist party, the Republicans have transformed from a party of the country club elitists – think the Bushes, the Romneys, the Rockfellers – to a party of the working class. If this is true, I break with Trump. Canada and the USA have been doing a good enough job with our shared continent; and, crazy as one or the other side gets, the democratic (small d) and rule of law machinery sooner or later gets things back on course.
