New in PJ Media:
Although Justin Trudeau announced his resignation on Monday, it will actually be a while before he is gone. What Trudeau did was prorogue parliament until March 4, which means it will not be in session but will not be dissolved. During this period, the Liberal Party will select a new leader, after which Trudeau says he will finally depart from the scene, at least a couple of months from now. Yet Donald Trump wasted no time in commemorating his departure with — you guessed it — yet another call for Canada to become the 51st state of the United States of America.
Early on Monday afternoon, Trump wrote on Truth Social: “Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned. If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!”
At this point, it’s hard to sustain the idea that Trump is just joking. This started out as a rhetorical jab, albeit one so sharp and stinging that it catapulted Trudeau into the downward spiral that culminated in his pending resignation, but now it looks increasingly as if he is serious. Fox News reported back in early December that during their first post-election meeting, Trump told Trudeau that “Canada has failed the U.S. border by allowing large amounts of drugs and people across the border, including illegal immigrants from over 70 different countries.”
The once-and-future president “became more animated when it came to the U.S. trade deficit with Canada, which he estimated to be more than $100 billion,” and told his vapid Canadian counterpart that “if Canada cannot fix the border issues and trade deficit, he will levy a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods on day one when he returns to office.”
Trudeau immediately played the left’s only card: victimhood. He told Trump that he couldn’t impose such a tariff “because it would kill the Canadian economy completely.” To that, Trump shot back: “So your country can’t survive unless it’s ripping off the U.S. to the tune of $100 billion?” Trump “suggested to Trudeau that Canada become the 51st state, which caused the prime minister and others to laugh nervously.” Trump pushed on, telling Trudeau “that prime minister is a better title, though he could still be governor of the 51st state.”
There is more. Read the rest here.

Rather than admitting all of Canada as one state start admitting break-away Provinces. The western provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are fed up to the teeth with the Ontario-Quebec hegemony ruling out of Ottawa. When the four western provinces join the United States then just TAKE (occupy) the Northwest Territories and the Yukon to secure access to their oil and gas. Leave Nunavut to Ontario-Quebec. Soon the maritime Provinces (everything east of Quebec) will clammer for admittance to the Union.

Ain’t happening.

You’re right, Rarely–this whole thng is silly. I think the president has more serous stuff to focus on than trolling Canada.

Not even a remote possibility–simply dreaming.

Keep hoping you are right. I don’t have a dog in the fight, but you are fooling yourself if you think it can’t happen. You think the Canadian military would be up to stopping even our woke, drag-queen-pimping armed forces if we were willing to allow BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba to join us? Sit back and watch, buddy. Trump might let Canada wait until Greenland has been brought onboard, but if he decides it is necessary to do that in order to curtail Chinese expansion close to our shores, stand by.

B.C., Alberta. Saskatchewan and Manitoba aren’t going anywhere near joining the U.S.
Even if (a mighty big “if”) they wanted to leave Canada it wouldn’t be to join the U.S.

It would end up being more than one state, and politally leaves a lot to work out.
࿗Infidel࿘ says
If each of their provinces & federal territories became states, then only 4 of them would be conservative, and the remaining 8 liberal (assuming that Quebec is excluded). It would politically be horrible for Republicans, doing to the US what illegal immigration did to California
It’a probably a better idea to merge and re-split the country along political lines. Eastern Canada w/ New England, NY, MD, DE, IL, WA, OR & CA could become Canada. Western Canada w/ rest of the US could become US. Trudeau could take over the Leftist part of the country, and Trump & Polievre/Bernier the Rightist part
James Lincoln says
I agree, Infidel.
The United States does not need a new state (Eastern Canada) that would be majority Democrat.
But Western Canada may be an opportunity – and a win-win.
RegT says
That sounds better to me, Infidel. My family came here from Quebec in the early 1900s (when my paternal great-great grandfather got here, he enlisted in the US Army in time for WWI), mostly as farmers and tradesmen. We’ve been conservative from the start, but the French-Canadians of today might not be a very good fit for conservatives such as myself -a guy who will die here in Montana and was born in Texas. I’m not saying I dislike them, more that they probably wouldn’t want anything to do with me (like most of my French-Canadian Democrat cousins 😉

First concern and the reason not only economic but political and cultural is NOT to become Islamists! This is why the idea has merit!

Thank you Lincoln, RegT and Hoaglandj for your responses

If Canada joined the United States, though, then what would happen to predominantly French-speaking Quebec? Would it become like Puerto Rico, or more like Louisiana State?
Leonidas says
Quebec is bilingual and can be like Puerto Rico of US.
࿗Infidel࿘ says
I’d think Trump would be happy to let go of Quebec. It’s really Western and Northern Canada that is critical, becoming geographically closer to Russia as the Arctic melts, and Russia gets a real proper northern coastline

Russia is not taking over Canada, either.

The United States tried to annex Canada in 1775 and again in 1812. Couldn’t do it. Neither could the Fenians in 1866. It seems like a bad idea. I think Trump is trolling again. I wonder what he is really after?

He certainly has a wild imagination.
gravenimage says
Yes, I think this is just trolling.
࿗Infidel࿘ says
Not that it would happen, but the ground realities are pretty different today. In 1775 and 1812, Britain was the world’s leading power, and so the Redcoats saw to it that they didn’t lose Canada to the newly independent US
That’s very different today, since Britain is a shadow of its former self – even what it was in the 00s. As for Canada, they barely have an army, and the decade of wokism that they’ve had has damaged them much more than the US, which has just had 5 years of it. I don’t think we’ll invade Canada, but if we do, it won’t be like Russia-Ukraine: it will be a bit more than a walkover
As for Trump’s intention, he sees the future Polievre government on the horizon, and is trying to set up in advance a strong negotiating position for the US. Since Canadian conservatives, particularly Stephen Harper, have been the “free-trade” fanatics of the type most Republicans used to be before Trump. I think Trump is trying to beat down that faction of the Canadian polity

Canada: The provinces are Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. The three territories are Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon.
This is more than one more State! This is real North America. A huge area and not so easy to defend!

BTW. Trudeau’s resignation was well expected before Trump was elected. Trump had minimal, if any, effect on Trudeau resigning.
Also Canada’s trade surplus with the U.S. might have something to do with the exporting of +/- 4,000,000 barrels of crude oil sent to the U.S. per day, every day. It’s hardly a rip-off. Incidentally, in 2023 that represented 60% of all U.S. oil imports and totaled $134 billion. Sales of natural gas. hydro power, and metals and minerals totaled a further huge figure. These are hardly industries Canada is “stealing” from the U.S.
There’s lots more to say but that’s enough for now. Basically Trump is full of el toro fou fou.
࿗Infidel࿘ says
I think Trump is more granular, and going industry by industry. When he was POTUS, he confronted Canada for their tariffs on Wisconsin dairy products, and made the case that that particular trade was unfair. Trudeau, and even Harper, retorted that Canada has a net export of products but a net import of services. But that is small consolation to those American businessmen who see artificial government barriers to selling stuff into Canada, just b’cos they’re not in the service sector

There is a mechanism under NAFTA to deal with disagreements. Of course Trump will ignore that and other agreements thereby showing that the U.S. cannot be trusted to honour its treaties. He is doing his best to antagonize U.S.’s allies. This will not bode well for the U.S.
࿗Infidel࿘ says
NAFTA is defunct: you now have the USMCA. As for “allies”, we’ve seen what sort of “allies” countries like Canada, UK, Germany and France have been over the last 10 years, particularly when Trump was in power. They only work well w/ similar regimes in DC. Which is why it’s now time for the US to crack the whip
Russia is less annoying to the US than these so-called “allies”
