The Biden administration removed the Houthi terrorist designation in 2021, and then partially reapplied the designation as “Specially Designated Global Terrorists” (SDGT) last year, due to the Houthis terrorist activities in the Red Sea. Biden claimed that he removed the designation for the sake of humanitarianism:
The Houthis remain in control of much of western Yemen after overrunning Sana’a, the capital, in 2014. The Houthis also retain control of the port city of Hudaydah, through which much of the international community’s humanitarian assistance flows.
But no matter what aid is sent to terrorist-controlled regions, funds are misappropriated to further fuel jihad terror. The Houthis have not only blocked funds from reaching the most needy; they have also endangered aid workers.
Now the Houthis are bemoaning Trump’s full designation of the group as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.
Giving in to and appeasing terrorist groups only guarantees that they will escalate their activities. Such a supine stance does no good for the people who are suffering because of the activities of the terror group in question. Biden’s persistent policy of appeasement made him a global joke, harmed US interests, and boosted jihad terror.
Designating a group to be a terrorist organization disrupts the group’s financial support network. It also opens the group to sanctions.
