Also, the history would probably have been very different. The Arab conquests would have started from Damascus, islam itself would have been put together in Baghdad and Buqhara, not Mecca or Medina, and the Turks, rather than the Arabs, would have been the #1 islamizing influence in Asia at least, if not in Africa

Fascinating. I was also very surprised to find that there is *no* contemproaneous or near contemporaneous indication that Muhammad ever existed. That this was likely invented after the fact as an excuse for conquest is deeply disturbing–and still the cause of endless violence today.

The Arabs made up Islam after they conquered the Christian and Jewish regions of the levant. Those Arabs didn’t run the cities, but rather allowed the local leaders to continue running the cities and pay tribute to the Arabs. But the Arabs saw the tremendous faith that the Christians and Jews had and were jealous. Thus was born the idea of a make believe superior religion they called Islam. Which clearly steals stories from Jews and Christians while getting some basic facts wrong likely due to lack of literacy. Muhammad then was invented to essentially make excuses for much of the horrible and deviant and murderous behaviors of the Arabs. Like sex slavery and pedophelia and breaking treaties and lying and multiple wives and making war eternally everywhere against Christians and Jews until there is no more religion except Allah.

You are likely entirely right. Our problem is .. is the origin of Christianity not suspiciously similar? .. not to suggest that wholesome Christianity is to be compared in any other way to disgusting Arab religion/culture.

I have to disagree. the “origin of Christianity” was a fulfillment of much prophesy in the Bible from Genesis through Malicai.
there are more than 300 prophecies about Christ in the Bible, and most have been fulfilled. Only those which concern His promises of Paradise and His full reign as King are yet to have fulfillment. .
And of course, the Gospels and the letters written by His disciples provide more information about Jesus.
Besides the Bible, there are at least 20 secular sources that have information about Jesus Christ and His disciples
Nothing like the evil invention of a fake prophet and his demonic ‘god.’

Disclaimer: Uncle Kepha sees Islam as a false religion, recognizes a number of false witnesses in the Qur’an concerning the beliefs of Christians and Jews, and shares Mr. Spencer’s concern about how any criticism of Islam, no matter how respectful, gets labeled “Islamophobia” and “hate-mongering”.
I respectfully disagree with Mr. Spencer on Muhammad’s existence. Few movements starting among ordinary people in places “off the beaten track” are noticed by the great, powerful, and articulate until they literally appear on the proverbial doorstep.
In China, I visited a mud-brick, Qing-era schoolhouse where Hong Xiuquan once taught. Why was such a place preserved as a museum in a country with scores of grander 1th century residences and buildings? Hong Xiuquan launched the Taiping Rebellion, which convulsed China between 1850-1864. Had Hong not gotten it into his head that he was the younger brother of Jesus Christ, of whom he heard from on Liang A-fa, and called to restore Han rule to China, the place where he taught a ragged bunch of Hakka boys whose parents wanted them to be able to read and write probably would’ve been razed and turned into a shopping center long ago. Further, had Hong’s movement gone no further than a small, local sect on the fringes of a nascent Chinese Protestant community, the same would have happened, and Hong would’ve died an obscure Hakka schoolteacher somewhere to the northwest of Guangzhou. But the Taiping Rebellion, even if it ended in failure with Hong burning h
imself with his harem in Nanjing, and his teenaged son and heir beheaded, “put him on the map”.
So, I believe, it is with Muhammad ibn Abdallah.
If Sophronios of Jerusalem did not mention Muhammad or the Qur’an, I’d also note that apart from passing reference to the gods Bel and Nebo falling down and stooping, Isaiah says nothing about the religious texts and beliefs of the Assyrians, whose destruction of the northern kingdom of Israel Isaiah himself witnessed; while the prophet Ezekiel is mute on the beliefs and religious texts of the Babylonians–even though it seems he was living among them “on the River Chebar”. Sophronios was probably more interested in explaining the conquest of Jerusalem and Syria from the standpoint of his own Christian theology–and if he was at all familiar with the Old Testament, I’m sure it gave him a lot of grist for his mill.
Abd al-Malik’s work in cobbling the Qur’an together reflects a pre-Gutenberg era when memory, scraps of manuscript, and the like was all that most people had to go on. At this stage of the game, I will also guess that Uthman put together an authoritative version of the Qur’an some time before Abd-al-Malik.
A movement with the vigor and ferocity of early Islam arises from a working faith; not in its absence–and, pastiche of garbled visions and misunderstood Jewish and Christian lore though it be, the Qur’an does not seem to be a mere afterthought of an already successful conqueror. If the inscription in the Dome of the Rock differs from the standard text, it is because there is still something of flux in the transmission of the Qur’an during the days of ‘Umar; not that the Qur’an or its precursor did not exist.
Also, Muhammad aping what he thought the prophets of Israel were like is something entirely credible to me. Such people crop up wherever and whenever the Gospel is preached–if only so that God may show us who is approved and who is not. (BTW, as a confessional Reformed believer, Uncle Kepha believes there’s been no real prophecy since John the Aposlte penned the last verses of Revelation). Americans are probably familiar with that great 19th century flim-flam man named Joseph Smith. Even in China, they had Hong Xiuquan, who would have died an obscure village schoolteacher had his attempt to play Younger Brother of Jesus Christ not launched the Taiping Rebellion.
@Dollops– Good question about the origins of Christianity, but here’s the real dope:
In the late 1st century, Tacitus wrote of the reigns of the Caesar. Re Nero, he notes his persecution of Christians, and that Christians took their name from one who was crucified while Pontius Pilate was procurator in Judaea. Tacitus’ tone makes it clear that he knew of Christians largely second-hand. He probably never actually spoke with Christians, nor had he read the New Testament (even if Uncle Kepha is sure it existed by his time). How would he have known of Christ being crucified by Pontius Pilate? Tacitus probably had recourse to the actual official record. As F. F. Bruce noted, at this point, history and the Christian Creed intersect: “…suffered under Pontius Pilate.”
The Gospel of Mark, which, Papias tells us, was written under Peter’s direction at Rome, speaks of Herodians and their disagreements with the Pharisees. Who would have known much at all of the Herodians after 70 A.D.? Mark also tells us that Simon of Cyrene, who was made to carry Jesus’ cross, was “Here, the father of Alexander and Rufus”, with no further information given. Mark clearly thought his audience had no need of further introduction to those two contemporaries. Dear Dollops, like you (perhaps), I was raised to believe “everyone knows the Gospels were written loooooong after the events, like centuries.” Mark’s mention of Alexander and Rufus was the first nail in the coffin of that meme for me.
John, which critics tell me is supposed to be very late, nonetheless has a wealth of topographic material which, the achaeologists tell me, suggests familiarity with Judaea and Jerusalem as they were while the Second Temple still stood. In his fourth chapter (the King James and American Standard actually have it as it stands in Greek) says that “Jesus sat thus on the well.” How? One can easily imagine John miming what his own eyes had seen to his first audience.
Jewish opponents of Jesus never doubted his existence, as is clear whenever he is mentioned in the Talmud. While the Talmud is the product of 6th century Mesopotamia, its traditions are often traceable back to the Pharisees of Second Temple-era ‘Eretz Yisroel.
Against the Old Tubingen School (the people who gave us the idea that the Gospels were 2d century), Sir William Ramsay in his _St. Paul the Traveler and Roman Citizen_ notes that in his descriptions of Roman officialdom and the places they served, Luke’s account in Acts is flawless–which would hardly be the case if it was produced long after the events.
Christianity’s origins are far less obscure than Islam’s.

While I believe that Muhammad existed and that the Qur’an represents his pretended prophesies, please do not take this respectful disagreement with our host as an endorsement of Muhammad’s claims or of the Qur’an to be “scripture”.
