In a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Pakistan Army, reports indicate that TTP militants have kidnapped 16 Pakistani nuclear scientists in an effort to coerce Islamabad into meeting their demands.
The TTP, also known as the Pakistani Taliban, has released a video in which the kidnapped nuclear scientists, employed by the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, are seen urgently appealing to the government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. In the footage, the scientists plead for their safety and call on the government to meet the terror group’s demands.

In the video, which has since gone viral on social media, a group of individuals—reportedly engineers working at the Qabul Khel Atomic Energy mining project in Lakki Marwat, Dera Ismail Khan—are seen desperately urging the Pakistani government to ensure their safety by acceding to the TTP’s demands.
In a statement, the TTP asserted that they have “detained” the nuclear engineers not to harm them, but to exert pressure on Islamabad to meet their demands. These include halting the Pakistan Army’s military offensive against TTP fighters. Various reports indicate that TTP militants have also seized a significant quantity of uranium from Pakistan’s largest uranium mine….

I’ve always wondered why Pakistan’s ACTUAL operational nuclear weapon program is of less concern to the United States than Iran’s program of “becoming” operational.
Is Pakistan more “trustworthy” than Iran?

No, but somehow, the US government still seems to think that relations w/ Pakistan are what they were when we had President Reagan and they had Gen Zia ul Haq. Although that alliance was to counter the Soviets in Afghanistan from the POV of the US, but to counter India from the POV of Pakistan

Old story. 8 hostages have been recovered. The Qabul-Khel mine “uranium ore” is only between .05% and .10% Uranium at best. The Taliban have no way to refine it.
If true, and rumors as fact is common, someone in the TTP leadership wants a bomb or doesn’t realize it takes an industry to refine uranium. If the TTP terrorists had actual weapons-grade nuclear material they would be more likely to kill themselves playing with it than producing a nuclear weapon. The TTP is an example that fundamental Islam, without high-demand exploitable resources, can only muddle along in a modern world, using or robbing the products of others.
One only needs to look at Afghanistan’s Taliban who have Japanese pickups, US Humvees, Russian AK-47’s, Asian textiles, and South Korean cell phones. They make nothing but drugs. With the Taliban in charge, Afghanistan has a poor future as a poor consumer.
There is an old joke: “Put your shoulder to the wheel, put your best foot forward, keep your eye on the ball, and put your money where your mouth is. Now try to work in that position!” That’s fundamental Islam in the modern world, undermining human talent.
