Okay, Trump is Serious About Acquiring Greenland, and the Game is Heating Up

When Trump first broached the idea of the U.S. buying Greenland during his first term, the media treated it as a joke. It is clear now, however, that Trump himself is not laughing, and never has been. He is deadly serious, not just about Greenland, but about the Panama Canal, as well as, most likely, about Canada as well. When questioned on Tuesday about his designs on Greenland, Trump offered two reasons for why he thought it was in America’s interest to obtain the territory, and even threatened Denmark if it didn’t comply.

Trump said that the U.S. needed Greenland as a matter of national security:

We need Greenland for national security purposes. I’ve been told that for a long time, long before I even ran, I mean, people have been talking about it for a long time. You have approximately 45,000 people there. People really don’t even know if Denmark has any legal right to it, but if they do, they should give it up, because we need it for national security. That’s for the free world. I’m talking about protecting the free world. You look at — you don’t even need binoculars. You look outside, you have China, ships all over the place, you have Russian ships all over the place. We’re not lettin’ that happen. We’re not letting it happen.

Then came the threat to Denmark:

And if Denmark wants to, uh, get to a conclusion — but nobody knows if they even have any right title or interest, the people are gonna probably vote for independence, or to come into the United States. But if they did do that, then I would tariff Denmark at a very high level.

Leaving aside the question of whether or not Denmark really has any legal title over Greenland, Trump’s warning of tariffs was perfectly reasonable. Acquiring Greenland, he said, was a matter of “protecting the free world.” That includes Denmark, which, after all, was a founding member of NATO in 1949 and so relies on the United States for its security. Trump seems to be working from the premise that the security that the U.S. provides for Denmark should not be a one-way street, and that the Danes, along with the other NATO countries, should be expected to do what was best for the entire alliance.

Trump left open the possibility of more than just tariffs. Regarding Greenland and the Panama Canal, a reporter asked him: “Can you assure the world that as you try to get control of these areas, you are not gonna use military or economic coercion?” Trump answered flatly: “No.” He explained: “I can’t assure you. You’re talking about Panama and Greenland. No, I can’t assure you on either of those two. But, uh, I can say this: we need them for economic security.”

  1. On “X” it turns out Greenlanders, all 57,000 of them, Want independence from Denmark and are favorable to becoming a part of the United States. The Panama Canal is one of the colossal blunders of President Carter. This mistake was compounded when President Clinton failed to maintain the US Military bases that defended the canal.

    • Exactly correct. Most young people in America are taught Carter was on of the top presidents ever but are never told how incompetent (at best) and anti American he was.

  2. One of Trumps’ colossal blunders is that he talks too much, and ends up scaring people.

    This idea should have been handled with more tact and finesse.

    • I don’t know, with China acting like an eternal 2-year-old, bitching about everything, Russia with delusions of grandeur, and 800,000 casualties in Ukraine, and Iran in serious trouble I am not sure that in-your-face approach is not the right thing.

  3. I have been told that single male American servicemen who are stationed at Thule AFB are fair game for Greenlander ladies. They don’t have a lot of local choices. This relationship is part of the reason Greenlanders have a favorable view of becoming part of the USA.

    • Really? Do you mean that the legendary prowess of American military men has made the locals eager to join the U.S.? That would be a first. I heard they’re hiding Elvis too…and from the same people.

  4. An interesting historical sidelight: in 1867, the US wanted to purchase Greenland. But ended up purchasing Alaska instead. In 1946 after WW2 the United States offered to pay $100 million for
    Greenland, which Denmark rejected. So, this desire to have Greenland is nothing new.

    • I am surprised Iceland which I think got broke free for Norway over 100 years ago has not had any interest in Greenland .

      • The population of Iceland is tiny–not even 400,000–smaller than the population of my mid-sized American city, Not sure Iceland would have the resources to manage Greenland.

  5. North America is extremely difficult to defend militarily. I hope the navy he deploys is mainly composed of submarines as surface vessels seem more to be targets these days.

    • As well as line up Northern Canada (Ellesmere Island) and the northern coast of Greenland w/ autonomous weapons, including ICBMs. Tell Russia that they’re being positioned against Beijing

  6. Threatening your allies is not a good thing to do . It is EVIL . Mr. Trump is very clear about it : The US has interests only , you bow to us , or else ! Spoken as a dictator not so different from Putin , and other extortionists… SHAME on you mr. Trump . And shame on every American citizen condoning or supporting this .

        • Certainly not WMP . I’m living in The Netherlands and a Dutchman . And many readers here know me . Can’t you handle the truth of mr. Trump behaving as a bully when it comes to his allies ? And yes , I want reactions from American citizens who understand this behavior from mr. Trum is quite ridiculous , and insulting to his allies/friends . But you don’t like it if mr. Trump is criticized for his indeed bad behavior . Shame on you !

      • I have no reason to be “embarrassed.” I don’t make any decisions for the government, and I’m not political at all.
        Mr. Trump says a lot of things….some of which he will follow up with more talk and/or actions.
        And if one can’t speak *truth* to friends, with whom can one be truthful? It’s the lies one needs to guard against.

        • You are honest and truthful SomeHistory , and I thank you for being so . You certainly have no reason for being embarressed . I fear the fragmentation of our Western World, its decline , for I see forces trying to divide and destroy us and isolationist politics from the USA will make us weaker , all of us . Our enemies are many, and not only from the outside . We need honest, truthful and God-fearing people and leaders . I don’t see those leaders in our Western World at this very moment . We can’t trust our leaders anymore , for they have their own , corrupted selfish agendas and the fear of God is not in them . May God our Lord lead and protect us , for Hé is my only hope left in this world .

        • Thank you, Ernie. There is a Psalm which says, “Do not put your trust in nobles, nor in the son of earthling man. To whom, no salvation belongs.”

          Sometimes, The Almighty God of the Bible, uses men to accomplish His Will. We must just be patient and as another Psalm says, “Wait for God.” He is our “salvation.”.
          He will soon “set things straight.”

    • I remember when Nuuk was Godthaab and Greenland’s second city was Godhaven. The latter is now an unpronounceable (for me) name called Qeqertarsuaq
