The FBI agent who said originally it did not look like terrorism was young thing (about 25 black and pretty)with a nose ring .The chief of police was an old lady who look like she just got off the bus for a nursing home trip and got lost trying find the bathroom at the local Burger King.. The end motive seems pretty clear although the FBI were a little slow in labelling it as a terrorist attack – perhaps as an abundance of caution until it met all their criteria (as they claim). That it was a suicide event since he clearly had no viable escape plan makes it look even more as a jihad action.
However, it seems that prior to (I believe) his radicalization by ISIS he was a pretty angry (and disturbed) person who had plotted to kill his entire family. That would not have been an ISIS event.
Once again it looks like it may be the act of a murderous, blood thirsty individual who brought that characteristic with him to islam rather than acquiring it there — not that it matters much. I would be particularly concerned about people who are attracted to islam and would be interested in knowing “why?”.

“Who had a motive for murder?” Money, affairs, adultery, etc.? A “motive” or “reason” for the crime, is a big help in finding the perp. When the perp is found and a trial goes forward,, a motive helps the jury find a verdict.
In cases where the perp is shot dead at the scene of the crime, the LE **know** the perp. They don’t really need to find a motive.
In this case, the only *reason* the FBi is *searching for a motive* is to help the mozlum *community* and islam to keep the blame on the problems the individual mozlum may have had..
