CAMERA-UK has cast a critical eye on the BBC’s coverage of an Israeli attack on a building in southern Lebanon. Its report is here: “BBC Eye Lebanon investigation promotes ‘spiteful enemy’ narrative,” by Hadar Sela, CAMERA UK, January 26, 2025:
As we have noted in the past, one indicator of the fact that the BBC is trying to promote a particular story as widely as possible is its appearance on multiple platforms. Such is the case with a recent item produced by ‘BBC Eye Investigations’, presented on January 24th under the title “Targeted: Lebanon’s Deadliest Attack”.
In addition to appearing on BBC iPlayer (with 11-month availability) and on the BBC World Service YouTube channel, that ‘investigation’ by Nawal Al-Maghafi – “senior international investigations correspondent, BBC World Service” – was promoted on social media channels including Twitter and the BBC’s Instagram and TikTok accounts The story was also featured in the January 24th edition of the BBC’s ‘Global News Podcast’ and the January 24th edition of BBC Radio 4’s ‘Woman’s Hour’.
On the same day, the BBC News website published a written version of the story under the headline “IDF said bombed apartments were Hezbollah base – but most killed were civilians”. Along with Al-Maghafi, that article is credited to Scarlett Barter and Jake Tacchi, whose Linkedin profile also describes him as a “conflict researcher” for an organisation called ‘Action on Armed Violence’ which is headed by former BBC employee Dr Iain Overton. Among the AOAV reports produced by Tacchi is one from March 2022 on the topic of the 2020 Beirut port explosion, which manages to avoid the topic of Hizballah but, in a section headed “neighbouring states”, does tell readers that:
“In the South, we find Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) – historically areas of intense explosive violence. The Gaza Strip has borne the brunt of this, with AOAV recording 5,700 casualties in Gaza between 2011-2020 – of which 90% were civilians.” [emphasis added]
Jake Tacchi is a member of the AOAV team; he wrote a 2022 report on the “blast in Beirut” of August 4, 2020, when tons of potentially explosive ammonium nitrates, that had been poorly stored in a hangar at the Port of Beirut by Hezbollah, blew up, killing 218, wounding 6,000, and causing $15 billion in damages, leaving large swaths of central Beirut in ruins. Yet the author of the AOAV report on that blast managed to omit any mention of Hezbollah, which was solely responsible for the blast. This apparently did not trouble anyone at the BBC about the quality of Mr. Tacchi’s reporting, for he again appears in a recent BBC program as one of the “investigators” of the Israeli attack on an apartment building in Ain el Delb in southern Lebanon, where, the IDF claims, there was a Hezbollah command-and-control center. But the investigators dismissed that IDF claim; they saw no evidence to support it.
The main purpose of the BBC Eye investigation into a strike on a building in Ain el Delb on September 29th 2024 is to persuade audiences that it was not justified because, according to the BBC’s version of events, none of the Hizballah operatives targeted were senior commanders. The written version tells readers that:
“The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says the building was targeted because it was a Hezbollah “terrorist command centre” and it “eliminated” a Hezbollah commander. It added that “the overwhelming majority” of those killed in the strike were “confirmed to be terror operatives”.
The IDF is not stupid. It does not risk the lives of its pilots, nor waste its weapons on sites devoid of military significance. In this case, they had evidence — possibly even evidence from a Palestinian working with Mossad who had infiltrated Hezbollah, or was a “watchdog” reporting on evidence of Hezbollah activity in his neighborhood — that the “civilian” building in Ain El Delb contained a Hezbollah command-and-control center.
But a BBC Eye investigation verified the identity of 68 of the 73 people killed in the attack and uncovered evidence suggesting just six were linked to Hezbollah’s military wing. “None of those we identified appeared to hold a senior rank.”
Don’t many terrorists, both in Hamas and Hezbollah, purposely go around in civilian clothes and carry papers suggesting they are simple civilians? What was the BBC Eye investigation’s evidence that only six of the 73 people killed were linked to Hezbollah’s “military wing”? How did it decide, by examining corpses, who had been in Hezbollah’s “military wing” and who in its “political wing,” and who had nothing to do with either wing of Hezbollah? And why did the BBC Eye investigators not provide figures on those who belonged to Hezbollah’s “political wing”? Could it be because the BBC knows that most Western governments, including the U.K., reject that distinction: for these governments, members of “both wings” of Hezbollah are designated as terrorists. If we include in the number of terrorists killed in that airstrike those who were in the “political wing,” what figure would we get? Thirty? Fifty? The Israelis think that most of those killed were Hezbollah members: “The overwhelming majority were confirmed to be Hezbollah operatives.” Does the IDF have a record of lying, or of telling the truth?

In Britain and all across Europe there are murders, stabbings and attacks on women somewhere every day.
We in Britain, now under scrutiny and cowed down about what can or cannot say for fear of arrest – and likely imprisonment – now adopt a style of speech to describe suspects who commit such attacks.
We say things like this :
“The usual suspects”
Or
“A certain demographic ”
Or
“A Welsh choirboy no doubt ”
Sometimes we even use swear words.
There is one thing for certain.
These violent attacks will not decrease. Why should they ??
We stagger from one tragedy to another.
And a fresh cover up or media distortion.
We are being sacrificed.
