Houston: Muslims say New Orleans jihad massacre ‘has no place in Islam,’ worry about ‘Islamophobia’

Maybe the plight of the people quoted in this article would be easier to empathize with if there really was an “Islamophobic” backlash after jihad attacks, but there usually isn’t, and shouldn’t be. These folks would also arouse more pity if “Muslims fear Islamophobic backlash” stories were standard establishment media fare after every jihad massacre.

Meanwhile, Imam Basem Hamid says: “This is how people get radicalized – by getting exposed to unreliable sources of Islam.” It would have been helpful if he had explained exactly what Shamsud-Din Jabbar got wrong about Islam, but he didn’t, and wasn’t asked to do so. The reporter no doubt assumed that Islam is a religion of peace and so didn’t ask, and Hamid knew that anyone who pointed out the Qur’an’s violent verses and asked how Jabbar was violating Islamic teaching would be denounced as an “Islamophobe” anyway, so he didn’t have to bother explaining.

Note also that Umme Kulsum says: “The first fear in my mind was I hope it’s not someone from our community — that was the first fear.” Not “The first fear in my mind was that many people were killed or wounded.”

And Imam Hamid “didn’t just denounce the attack. He singled out social media, which he believes is fueling a lot of hate, anger and misinformation.” See? Shut down Jihad Watch, and all will be well.

At Houston’s Medical Center Islamic Society, men, women and children left their shoes at the entrance as they gathered for midday prayers.

This week’s Friday service was the first since the horrific New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans. Basem Hamid, one of the imams at the mosque, had a powerful message in his sermon.

“As Muslims, we condemn this incident, this horrific act with the most severe and clearest statement,” he said. “This act has no place in Islam and has no place among Muslims and it’s not accepted by any standard. There is no excuse and there is no justification for it.”

In the wake of the truck attack and the revelation that the driver lived in Houston and had pledged allegiance to the terrorist group ISIS, some Muslim residents worry about the impact this will have on their community. Will they be singled out? Should they be concerned about their safety? Many of those attending Friday prayers were quick to point out that the alleged perpetrator did not represent them or their faith….

Among those in the room was Umme Kulsum, who is originally from India but has lived in Texas for a number of years….

“The first fear in my mind was I hope it’s not someone from our community — that was the first fear,” she said. “Then it’s like, now what will happen? What next? What will be the Islamophobic reactions we might face in our community?”…

Some congregants of the mosque said there’s an uncomfortable feeling that echoes what they felt more than two decades ago. Mohamed Salama, an IT worker who splits his time between Houston and Dallas, talked about this after Friday prayers.

“I lived through September 11 and I have, to this day, have very vivid memory of both how sad it was and then afterwards, how difficult it was to be a Muslim in the U.S. and how concerned I was about practicing, simply just going to mosque.”…

The Islamic Society of Greater Houston said Jabbar was not a formal member at any of its 21 mosques in Houston.

During the service at the Medical Center Islamic Society, Imam Hamid didn’t just denounce the attack. He singled out social media, which he believes is fueling a lot of hate, anger and misinformation. Many individuals, he said, claim to be experts on Islam or leaders of the faith but end up leading others astray.

“This is how people get radicalized – by getting exposed to unreliable sources of Islam,” he said.

Hamid and other imams in Houston say they’ve been talking to each other about how to combat this problem….

Shariq Ghani, the executive director of The Minaret Foundation, a multi-faith group in Houston, said it’s important to build and maintain bridges with other communities….

“The clergy I’ve spoken to aren’t very concerned about retaliation or secondary attacks,” he said. “What they’re most concerned about is how this impacts us, our neighborliness, our social cohesion. Will it lead to Islamophobia or othering communities here in our city?”

  1. now if this is in fact Islam finely rejecting the violence. This is the first step to proving to the nation of the USA that your here to enjoy the same freedoms we enjoy. Condemning there brothers & sisters for committed crimes on what can and could be friends and family in the same country. Acts like this could be the healing needed to prove they want peace as much as we do. To live there lives in peace. Only time will tell just how sincere they really are

    • It ain’t. This is their favorite pattern. They commit mass murder in the name of Allah and in accordance to their Koran. Then they cry that they fear reprisals. There should be reprisals. As Ann Coulter once said, “This is war.”

      • You are completely right, Michael. Same old crap: saying it’s not “their” community. Interesting when muslims consider “their” community to be all muslims, without regards to borders, area, etc. If you are a muslim, you are obligated to support the jihad of others. So, enough – if you hate the violence that muslims re committing, stop following the religion of war (that’s right, not the always touted “peace,” but what it really is: a destructive bunch of rot). So, sorry mike, but it’s a great thing to hope that here are peaceful muslims, but the qu’ran does not endorse peace; rather, it enjoins violence (it’s also boring and stupid- if you don’t have Spencer’s Critical Qu’ran, I highly suggest obtaining it and reading it, especially the notes).

    • They’ve said this same thing a hundred times…that jihad has no place in Islam or that jihad really means inner struggle.
      The Quran contains at least 109 verses that speak of war with nonbelievers, usually on the basis of their status as non-Muslims. Some are quite graphic, with commands to chop off heads and fingers and kill infidels wherever they may be hiding. Muslims who do not join the fight are called ‘hypocrites’ and warned that Allah will send them to Hell if they do not join the slaughter.

      • The important thing to note here is that that say it only in English and other non-muslim languages, and only to infidels. There is no such messaging in Arabic, Turkish, Urdu or other muslim languages to members of the ummah. As has been copiously noted by MEMRI

      ALL muslims share to common beliefs:
      1) There is no God but Allah.
      2) Muhammad is his messenger.
      This means that all Muslims believe in what ever Mohammed has said (or Allah through Muhammad), and agree with whatever Mohammed said.
      And consequently believe in and agree with what ever Mohammed has done. No matter what it is. After all it is the word of Allah, their God.

  2. the ‘first thing I thought,” not being mozlum, was “oh no,’ and hoping the death count didn’t go up, and wondering if any little children were hurt. (the people across the street allow their kids to stay up really late)

    My next thought…..what’s the mozlum’s name and from what nation? And finding out he was shot dead, relieved my mind that he might have gotten away with it.

They engage in war for the sake of Allah, so they kill and are killed…” For this killing act, a sacred and holy act, deceitful Allah spiritually rewards Muslims with Paradise. Allah in Qur’an 8:12 says, “When your lord revealed to the angels: ‘I am with you so make firm those who believed[Muslims]. I will cast a terror into the hearts of those who became infidels[Non-Muslims]. So strike above their necks(decapitation), and strike off(chop off) every finger from them.’” Allah in Qur’an 49:15 says, “Surely the believers are only those who believed in Allah and his messenger. They do not doubt, and they performed jihad with their MONEY AND THEIR LIVES for the sake of Allah. Those are the truthful.”

    A ‘phobia’ is an irrational fear of something.
    If you’ve looked around the world, you’ll have noticed that over the past 30+ years, Islam has been front and center when it comes to terrorism and violence. Then, if you read-up some on Islam you’ll find it has historically been spread by the sword and has left a trail of blood and tears for centuries and it continues to be spread by fear and violence, today.
    At this point it is no longer a ‘phobia’.

    On the other hand those same Muslims might be very much aware in the brutal cruel violent and deadly essence of Islam but they could be lying the American public to protect the image of their religion.

    If that is really the case then they are puting into practice the Islamic doctrine of Taqiyya , which is the belief that the deception of speaking lies is a good thing to do, as long as it’s done for the advancement of Islam.

  11. Muslim ideology never contributed to or it’s adherents built anything in the civilised world, letting them in is and was a criminal activity, they’re bioweapons. They need to be relocated to middle-estern countries and some parts of Asia to contemplate their cohesion with each other and the world’s potential islamophobia while living in full maturity of conditions their existence makes.     As a parent, she worries about her children and the questions they’ll ask her. She said parents have to be prepared to talk to their kids about these issues.
