Right after Trump threatened to impose high tariffs (25%) on all goods from Canada until Canada stems the flow of illegal aliens and drugs entering America from the Canadian side of the border, panic ensued north of the border, and Trudeau called up Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate. Unsatisfied by the call, Trudeau desperately flew out to Florida for a face-to-face meeting with the President-elect. Following the meeting, Trudeau appeared calm, but the panic continues to grow as Trudeau faces numerous related issues, with no real solution in sight.
At first, Trudeau tried to calm a potentially explosive situation, which was made even worse by previous unsettling parliamentary episodes. In late October, an MP from Trudeau’s own Liberal Party stated that “Trudeau’s resignation would be in Canada’s best interest.” This was Trudeau’s plight in a nutshell:

Then speculation arose that Trudeau was now so desperate that he “could do something dramatic such as cutting immigration rates dramatically or even shut down the sitting of the Commons to avoid further drama.” The prediction had merit. He cracked down on tens of thousands of foreign students, who are now facing deportations. He’s also cutting student permits by 35% — creating mass layoffs at colleges. This is causing “turmoil” at universities and colleges, particularly while illegals are still living in the country, some with criminal and terrorist backgrounds. Trudeau cites a poor housing industry and job crisis in the country — a crisis he created — but he still is not confronting the illegal migrant issue. While no one could argue about the deplorable state of Canada’s economy, Trudeau’s deportations should have begun with illegals, who are a detriment to Canada’s economy and safety. Now Trump is demanding that he do just that, and Trudeau is cornered.
His initial reaction, before the pure panic set in, was to make a show of calm, stating:
We’ve been preparing for this…We’re looking forward to doing this work, and we’re going to make sure that this extraordinary friendship and alliance between Canada and the United States continues to be a real benefit to Canadians.”
Even after Trudeau met with Trump, he tried to keep up appearances, with an uncharacteristically “meek and mild” demeanor, calling his conversation with Trump “excellent.” Never mind that Trump humorously said: “So your country can’t survive unless it’s ripping off the U.S. to the tune of $100 billion…maybe it should become the 51st state.” Ignoring the humiliation to Trudeau, Canadian leaders generally took the comment as a joke, and Trudeau appeared to be in control.
The Prime Minister’s Office followed up with a statement saying that Trump and Trudeau “shared a productive wide-ranging discussion” about “collaboration and strengthening our relationship.” The statement also said: “As Canada’s closest friend and ally, the United States is our key partner, and we are committed to working together in the interests of Canadians and Americans.”
Given Trudeau’s character and past acrimony toward Trump, it didn’t take a genius to realize that Trudeau’s calm was a façade, and that façade faded fast. Trudeau held immediate briefings with parliamentarians following his meeting with Trump, and now things are going south (no pun intended). Trudeau came under fire from opposition leader Pierre Poilievre, who said that Trudeau “has lost control of crucial government files, like the budget and the border, and put Canada in a weak position.” Dodging responsibility, Trudeau accused Poilievre of being “unhelpful in his criticisms when it comes to dealing with the incoming Donald Trump administration.” His next comment was eyebrow-raising, yet characteristic of the Trudeau Canadians know. He said to Poilievre: “there’s a long-standing tradition that when the nation comes under threat in some way, Canadians pull together to defend their country.” What Canada really needs is to be defended from Trudeau.
Whatever happened to the “excellent” conversation that Trudeau had described? It quickly vanished. Recall how Trump had described Trudeau in 2018 as “two-faced” and “very dishonest and weak”:

Now history is repeating itself, but this time it is much worse.
CTV News reported what Trudeau has stated about Trump in the past:
“What we’re seeing from these MAGA conservatives is an approach on going back on fundamental rights in ways we shouldn’t be seeing,” Trudeau said in a 2023 year-end interview with The Canadian Press. “We may think to ourselves, ‘This will never happen in Canada and this is just the Liberals bringing up the usual fear that they do.’ I’m sorry, it wasn’t ever supposed to happen in the United States either, and yet it did because of MAGA conservatism. The threat is real. What we witnessed was an assault on democracy by violent rioters, incited by the current president and other politicians…
According to political scientist Aaron Ettinger prior to Trump’s election:
If Trump is elected and Trudeau remains prime minister, they would be restarting the relationship from a place of mistrust.
The real point is that Trump is rightfully looking after American interests, as he should. I stated in a previous article that it was high time that Canada clean up the immigration mess that Trudeau created for the sake of Canada’s economy and national security.
Trudeau is obviously seething with rage over Trump’s threat, but his hands are now tied. In fact, he’s cornered. Trudeau’s best option is to step down. Canada needs solutions, and quickly; they cannot and must not come from a man who, among many other “accomplishments,” destroyed Canada’s economy; served the interest of illegals over Canadians; is unethical; and discussed with his cabinet “crushing the Freedom Convoy with tanks.” One of Trudeau’s own appointed senators has referenced him as “Stalineque.” Trudeau also has disturbing historic dealings with China; appointed an “Islamophobia” czar to crack down on free speech while allowing antisemitism to fester; and admires China’s “basic dictatorship.”

I have struggled w/ the spelling myself. Incidentally, 3 of the 4 leaders of Canada’s top parties – Trudeau, Poilievre, and Maxime Bernier (not to be confused w/ the outgoing French prime minister) are French speaking, so if Quebec seceded, how would Canada be that different from it?

Can’t Trudeau just dissolve Commons & call fresh elections? I thought that while Canada has a 5 year term, parliament can be dissolved any time the ruling party feels like it. The are already punitive tariffs on both sides. One area I see great possibilities is with LNG. Between the US and Canada we could dominate the world supply. This would really put the hurts to Russia. As for the 25% blanket tariff if Canada controls their border that needs not happen. If you have not done so please read Donald Trump’s book “The Art of The Deal” (2015) you will then understand what he is doing. Pierre Poilievre is just the sort of person Trump can work with.

I’ve made comments on here, that didn’t or wouldn’t take. I’m trying to decide whether it’s numbers that keep a comment from posting, but no, I see numbers where someone mentions a year, in numbers, or is a bible verse that someone puts in there comment, that makes that comment not post on here, and I have to go with that one.
Anytime I post a comment with a bible verse in it, the comment won’t post. So this a test, to see if my comment shows up, if I replace the numbers in the bible versem with the numbers in word form, and see if that works.

And, while I voted for Trump 3X, he simply should not have mentioned Canada becoming the 51st state, or one new state per province, even in jest or mock provocation (which, granted, Trump practices in many contexts). That has to be a sensitive issue for Canadians of any political stripe.
My best wishes to Canada. I admired the stance of their truck drivers back in the covid years, and pray that those hurt by the crackdown on them will be relieved of the ensuing economic and legal burdens.
