New in PJ Media:
The curtain has finally come down on one of the longest acts in American history: after lingering in hospice care for nearly two years, Jimmy Carter is dead at the age of 100. Now, as we all learned in Latin class, de mortuis nisi bonum, that is, only say good things about the dead, and by most accounts, Jimmy Carter was a decent fellow who tried to do the right thing by his lights. There is no Latin maxim, however, about not speaking ill of a dead president’s time in the Oval Office, and on that score, a great deal can and should be said about Jimmy Carter.
Although Carter was the longest-lived president of the United States ever, it is a shame that he didn’t live even longer. The second Trump administration promises to put an end to the long, slow decline of the United States and the now well-established habit of betraying our allies that Carter did so much to initiate, and it’s too bad that Carter won’t be around to witness America’s resurgence — if, that is, the late president’s friends and ideological kin don’t manage to block any such rebound.
Back in 1978, when America was in the midst of Carter’s weak and sanctimonious presidency, the earnest chief executive lowered taxes and proposed cuts in federal spending. Then he immediately contradicted his efforts to bring fiscal responsibility to the enormous and ever-growing federal government by creating a new Cabinet-level agency, the Department of Education. This new agency introduced the federal government into areas that had hitherto been under private control; constitutional literalists pointed out that there was no mention of education in the nation’s founding document, and hence no clear warrant for the federal government to get involved in it.
Forty-plus years later, Carter’s Education Department bears vivid witness to the fact that putting something under the control of the federal bureaucracy invariably makes it less efficient, more wasteful, and more bloated than it would have been otherwise. The test scores of American students have been plummeting, and the left has used Carter’s department to introduce all manner of woke madness into American schools. Trump has pledged to close the Department of Education, and if he manages to do it, American students might have a fighting chance to get an education.
Carter also established the sanctimonious style of all subsequent Democrat presidents, with the partial exception of Bill “I Did Not Have Sexual Relations with That Woman” Clinton. On Apr. 18, 1977, with inflation and unemployment spiraling ever upward, Carter went on television in the guise of an apocalyptic prophet crossed with a scolding schoolmarm. In full prophet of doom mode, Carter informed Americans that the sky was falling: “The oil and natural gas that we rely on for 75 percent of our energy are simply running out…. Unless profound changes are made to lower oil consumption, we now believe that early in the 1980’s the world will be demanding more oil than it can produce….”

dear mr Spencer ,
thank you very much for your analyses. I very well remember president J. Carter policy : one of the causes of U.S.A. decline.

This is the son-of-a-bitch who, by pulling the rug out from under the Shah of Iran and allowing Ayatollah Khomeini to return to Iran to establish a murderous Shi’a fundamentalist theocracy, was responsible for millions of deaths, these deaths that are still piling up to this day. What Carter did was compounded by Obama’s Arab Spring, which destabilized the Middle East even more.
I am afraid that unless Israel destroys Iran’s Nuclear program very soon, the first atomic war will be fought in the Middle East.

Yes let us not forget the Iran hostage crisis bought on and encourage by a weak president leading the nation. The betrayal of our only allied nation in the Middle East Israel , the big appease of Moslem nations started under Carter. The broadcast of Carter coming on TV telling everyone to wear a sweater and turn the heat down in their houses in the winter for the “betterment” and advancement of the country with out of control energy cost . I think Carters family where not a thieving crime family like the Bidens .I think he did not use the federal agencies against his political enemies ,Carter was nobodies puppet or beholden to foreign powers like Biden. Biden and the woke mob owe their rise to power that started with Carter’s expansion of the federal government power money and influence into things that should have been handled at state and local level .The woke mind set started with Carter in 1976 and grew in 48 years to the madness we have today .The election of Trump I hope signals the decline of the religion of wokeness .I am glad Carter lived to see Trump elected ,Carter I think was an honest man ,but his Presidency started the cancer thinking that big government( more alphabet agencies created with unelected people with careers spanning decades with ever greater amount of money’s and expanded people under them)from the elite can solve all problems

@Mr. Spencer: you write: ‘(…) de mortuis [nihil] nisi bonum, that is, only say good things about the dead’. Someone once corrected me, saying that the correct expression is ‘(…) nihil nisi bone’, ‘nothing if not well said/formulated’. I suppose that both words can be used, but personally I prefer the latter one. I like to argue that with Hitler as an example. Of course it is possible to say good things, even about Hitler (can’t think of any right now, though), but if you can only say good things about him, the bad things must needs be omitted. Such as? Well, hmmm, let’s see now, where do I start? Never mind. Point well made, I think.
Anyway, I seem to recall that Mr. Carter was tainted by the accusation of antisemitism.
@Transmaster: it all depends on your definition of an atomic war, because destroying the Iranian nuclear program may well be classified as an atomic war, since nuclear weapons are involved.

Good things about Hitler? OK. He was a conservationist — didn’t waste water by bathing.
Anything else? Nope.

Hitler loved animals and banned use of animals in drug research. He outdid peta. What a caring guy. So he had to replace animal research with people instead.

Evil people know they are evil. that’s one reason they go out of their way to show the public how wonderful they are.

One can praise Jimmy Carter for his humanitarian efforts, his building of houses etc however there is nothing about this man Presidency that warrants praise. As mentioned in above comments Carter sent Iran back to the dark ages when he proceeded to oust the Shah and replace with a barbaric regime. Let American be held hostages, so much more.
30 days of lowered flag for this person, way too long. Lay in State nope just bury him next to his wife and walk away.

I consider Jimmy Carter one of the earlier most evil American presidents, maybe a hair less evil than the nazi bush clan.
I was in Georgia when he was the governor. He was a horrible governor and Georgia was a mess. He covered his tracks as Atlanta only prospered by infusion of Arab money.
He was not a little ole peanut farmer but a peanut plantation owner worked by his black workers not allowed in his white only church. He was a nuclear physicist and helped develop the first nuclear submarine.
His presidency was really run by polish nazi zbignew brizinski.
He is why Iran fell to khomeni.
He created 2 more unconstitutional agency’s, energy and education, both not needed and a curse.
He undid the laws that prevented interest charged to go double digit.
He hated Israel and did a peace process to lead Israel to destruction over time.
Houses habitat was just w cover for his evilness. All the horrors done since to america and the world by other president’s was built on the evil foundation he set up for them.
The song I would play at his funeral from billy Joel is, Only The Good Die Young.
To Jimmy, I hope you find the eternal sauna comfy.

After never taking a Latin class, I can say what I want about carter, who did as much damage, caused as many deaths, as hitler.
He and his wife and brother, didn’t stop using electricity, nor traveling, Hypocrites tell others what to do when they do the opposite.
carter was on the side of evil….just as the dem pretend presidents have been since (bo and biden)
biden took a swipe at Mr. Trump in his praise of carter. Anyone who praises evil, is also evil and biden has proven he’s just as evil as the late, never great, carter.
carter was a control freak. He was also full of hate, while pretending to be Christian.
Israel should have told him to take a little boat ride with the wild bunnies.

“…caused as many deaths as Hitler”?????
Are you nuts???
somehistory says
count them up…people are still dying from carter’s bungles and his hatred of Israel.
How many young women and girls have been murdered by iran’s ghouls?
How many Jews have been murdered by iran sponsoring hamas and hezbollah and the houthis?
iran would not have had that kind of power. hamas would not have had the whole world clamoring for a ‘state’ if he had not been so gung-ho for the terrorist orgs.
Keep counting….prove that what I wrote is wrong.
Rarely says
I won’t try to prove a negative.
Where do you get your figures? Out of the air?
Over 55,000,000 people were killed in WWll – most of them in Nazi Germany’s actions in Europe — 25,000,000 in the Ukraine alone.
Carter is responsible for more????
Get real if you hope to be taken seriously.
Rarely says
Correction: 25,000,000 in the Soviet Union.
Also, total WWll deaths between 70-85,000,000.

Note: No response from somehistory.
somehistory says
Thank you, John.
I do firmly believe that it is impossible to know with exactness how many people were killed by hitler (or his armies). Census counts are never going to be exact….people lie, people don’t answer the questionnaires, etc. and counting up the dead after a war….just burying the bodies has to be nearly impossible. Soldiers from the U.S. are still being identified.
beyond that, who can say how many people the ghouls of iran have murdered in the last forty years? They certainly aren’t making those counts public.they have murdered directly, they have used hamas, hezbollah and others to murder Jews and their own people.
Just in one year, hamas said that nearly 50k have been killed and they are responsible for every one of the dead.
and, what is more, responding to Rarely is usually pointless. He always has his own ideas of what is true or not, right or not and “rarely” if ever, admitted to someone that their argument was convincing. Even to posters like Wellington and Infidel, both of whom express their thoughts clearly.
Rarely says
Trying to equate Carter with Hitler is ridiculous. Might as well blame the Wright brothers for all plane related deaths — past, present and future.
Figures on WWll deaths can be found on numerous sites and, even if discounted, make Hitler the worst mass murderer since Attila the Hun. He was pure evil. So he was responsible for 40,000,000 deaths and not 45,000,000 but the Iranians have a very long way to go to get anywhere near that.
Carter may have been incompetent, naive and even anti-Semitic but he certainly wasn’t trying to create a mid-Eastern blood bath.
Rarely says
Most importantly, by equating Hitler with someone like Carter who was, at worst misguided, one is minimizing Hitler’s crimes.

Jimmy did have a brother, Billy, who drank a lot of beer, and who belched a lot.

One good thing that I’ll say about Carter: while wrong, he was well-intentioned when he was president. If there was an oil shortage and heavy inflation, it was b’cos of the OPEC countries weaponizing oil and using it that way. It was not b’cos of him sabotaging existing US energy production, the way Biden did in 2021 immediately after being sworn in. I dare say that had the US been energy dominant then like it was in 2020, Carter would likely have left it alone, and not let the Marxists in his party sabotage all that
The other thing: while he was wrong about Israel, he wasn’t a clear jihad sympathizer the way both Obama and Biden are. Yeah, he did make some bad moves, like severing diplomatic relations w/ Taiwan, and undermining the Shah of Iran. But in his defense, it can be reasonably said that nobody had any idea of what sort of a regime Iran was gonna get after the Shah fell. Contrast that to Obama & Biden, who were happy to sign the JCPOA w/ a known rogue state
The one thing he should not have done after retirement was be a one man diplomatic mission of his own, undermining subsequent presidents
Eric says
He lived long enough to become the 3rd worst president behind B Hussein O and Court Jester Joe.
Wellington says
Carter was a lousy President and a busy-body ex-President. Praises of him are not warranted and tend to confirm Napoleon’s cynical view of history, i.e., that it is a pack of lies agreed upon.
Walter Sieruk says
Jimmy Carter may be compared to Joe Biden.
First, largely because of Carter’s incompetent international polices of folly and terrible judgement , especially regarding the Middle East , he paved the way for that demonic Islamic revolution that led to the establishment of that tyrannical sharia based oppressive anti- America and anti- Israel Islamic regime of Iran.
Second, because of Biden’s treachery against the America solders and other US service people and our Afghan friends, he deliberately gave away the land that is Afghanistan to the Taliban, who are the vicious enemies of America and the brutal cruel Sharia based tyranny.
Furthermore both Jimmy Carter and Joe Biden say that they are Christians ,but the above ,just described results of their actions while on the Office of the Presidency had the outcome of the advancement of that diabolical ant- Bible , anti-Christianity , anti- Christian false religion of Islam.
Therefore, the claim Carter and Biden had said that they are Christians has to be an bogus claim and empty spoken words because the fruits of their behavior in Office turn out to be in Iran and Afghanistan be evil fruits. As Jesus taught, “By their fruits you will recognize them. “ Matthew 7:20. [N.I.V.}
Yes, the late Jimmy Carter and feeble old Joe Biden have much in common. It’s no wonder then that horrible creepy Joe had spoken so praising of Carter.
tgusa says
That is the perfect picture for his run for a second term. If he hadn’t died democrats would have voted for him. Democrats prefer that death warmed over look. Below is Joe, he is not yet to the point of the Carter picture but he is getting there.

Let’s face it, Jimmy Carter wasn’t any good for America. Likewise , he wasn’t any good for Israel . The only thing that Carter was “good” at , was aiding that America and Israel hating “mullah regime” come into power in Iran.
