First, President-elect Donald Trump tweaked Canada’s far-left Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about becoming governor of the 51st state of the United States of America. Then he said that the Panama Canal should once again come under American control. Make that the 52nd state. And now, are you ready for a 53rd state? On Sunday, Trump renewed a call he made during his first term: that the United States should buy Greenland from Denmark. Could the man possibly be serious?
Maybe not. The left’s propaganda arm, also known as the mainstream media, loves to portray Trump and his supporters as angry, bitter, ignorant people lashing out against the people who know better what’s good for them. Trump has never gotten credit for his sense of humor, despite the fact that he is easily the funniest man to occupy the White House since Ronald Reagan, and may even surpass the Gipper.
Much of Trump’s humor goes entirely unnoticed. Few have taken any note of the fact that his new Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, recalls the Doge Internet meme that Elon Musk briefly made Twitter’s logo in 2023. And Trump’s teasing of “Governor” Trudeau went so far over the head of MSNBC that the far-left garbage machine actually put out an article ascribing the gibe to Trump’s “confusion.”
On the other hand, there was nothing funny about Trump’s statement that the U.S. should resume control of the Panama Canal. “Has anyone ever heard of the Panama Canal?” Trump asked the crowd at AmericaFest. “Because we’re being ripped off at the Panama Canal like we’re being ripped off everywhere else.”
Trump went on to explain that the Panama Canal “was given to Panama and to the people of Panama,” “but it has provisions, you gotta treat us fairly and they haven’t treated us fairly. If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to the United States of America in full, quickly, and without question.”
Trump wasn’t being funny about Greenland, either. “For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World,” he wrote Sunday, “the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.” This got the same reception that it got during Trump’s first term. Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede said haughtily on Monday that “Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland. We are not for sale and we will not be for sale.” He doesn’t seem to have mentioned that Greenland is not an independent state but is Danish territory.

Frankly, neither Canada nor Panama have been behaving like allies. While we hear about the porous Mexican border, Canada has had an identical open borders policy like the US when it comes to infiltration of anti-Western criminal elements, and those people use the US-Canada border to pour into the US. That’s what Trump called Trudeau out on: he didn’t start off by demanding Canada the way Hitler demanded Sudetenland. All his jibes about Canada being the 51st state is just him trolling Ottawa: most Americans don’t want Canada in our union: it would be California on steroids
Panama has been one of the countries that has seen a Left wing government come to power, which is more sympathetic to Beijing. I saw Gordon Chang yesterday state that Beijing now controls both ends of the Panama canal thanks to the agreements they’ve had w/ this regime using their usual Belt/Road packages, and that’s what’s attracted Trump’s attention. The Panama Canal was originally US territory: we built it, and it enables the US to have one navy rather than two. If the Panama canal didn’t exist, ships on either the Atlantic or the Pacific coasts would have to use either the Magellan Straits or the north Canadian coastline to get to the other ocean
I’m not sure about what Denmark’s posture vis a vis the US exactly is, and I’m not sure I see the value of Greenland, whose ice will have to completely melt for US to access their mineral resources. On this one, not sure it’s a great strategic asset. It may have value as a negative asset i.e. in terms of denying any geopolitical adversary Greenland territory that might then be used to target the US. But if it’s in Denmark’s hands, and Denmark ain’t being run by loony leftists, they should be fine

Panama is a tax haven, Trumps demand to reduce shipping fees to a more modest level is reasonable. Without Justin Castro, the Cannucks.are friendly northern neighbours. Denmark is a reliable ally and is anti-woke. For this reason, your logic does not apply for Denmark.

Honestly, I’m not getting the point about the strategic importance of either Canada nor Greenland. Neither is about to get a pro-Russian regime, and the US does have Alaska. The main security threat to the US from the North is the Chicoms owning Trudeau about as much as they own Biden, but both leaders are on their way out. Finally, are there any Canadian assets that are being made available to US rivals instead of the US?
On the Panama Canal, I think that when it was built, the US made a mistake by building it smack dab in the middle of Panama: that left them w/ a legitimate claim to it. What they should have done was use the Panama-Colombian border, so that in addition to being the border b/w the 2 countries, it could have more solidly belonged to the US, since in the absence of the US, both Panama and Colombia would have had shared control of canal traffic revenues. Today, it’s rather late, and what’s worse: both countries have left-leaning regimes & would be pretty hostile to US real estate acquisition in the region. If Colombia gets back a Right leaning regime, then the US could persuade Colombia to allow a canal at the 2 nodes where South America starts, since Colombian territory does take a bit of the isthmus. That will also create a competitive alternative to the Panama canal, expand the Pacific-Caribbean shipping bandwidth and prevent gouging by Panama. If Beijing wants, they can also bribe Nicaragua to allow a canal through their territory

Greenland is a white elephant, It costs Denmark a lot to maintain and they have no use for it. If they run out of money to throw at it (which eventually will happen), someone else is going to acquire it. Better us than anyone else, both for security and because it’s a resource reserve.
I think Trump was semi-serious (sees the value going to waste, thought it was worth floating the idea). Denmark reacted like someone angling for a higher bid. (Made a production about it, rather than simply saying “Not for sale.”) Will it go anywhere? Probably not, though after the Muslim conquest of Denmark, there may not be a choice.

When Trump was speaking recently about the amount of countries that called him too congratulate him he says.. ”I dont know how many countries, but a lot”… The MSM reported that as ..”Trump doesn’t know how many countries there are”… Just like the bloodbath statement when he was talking about the bloodbath to the US Auto Industry if the Chinese made in Mexico Cars are allowed to be imported into America but the MSM reported that as..” Trump says there will be a bloodbath if he is not elected…
He didn’t really mean he wanted to BUY Greenland which is a part of Denmark.
