All hell has broken loose because Netflix dared to make a movie about the mother of Jesus, Mary, and had the poor taste of using a Jewish woman from the Middle East to play the part of a Jewish woman from the Middle East. The outpouring of venom and display of ignorance at this choice was quite amazing. More on the outrage expressed can be found here: “‘A disgusting Jew’: Uproar after Netflix casts Jewish-Israeli actress to play Mary, Jesus’s mom,” by Hannah Brown, Jerusalem Post, November 14, 2024:
Netflix released the trailer earlier this week for Mary, its upcoming movie about Jesus’s mother – a Jewish woman from the Middle East – and a good chunk of the Internet is melting down, because the actress in the lead role is a Jewish woman from the Middle East.
Noa Cohen, a 21-year-old Israeli actress, portrays the world’s most famous Jewish mom in the movie, but some social media users are calling for a boycott.
Objections were raised both on the grounds that Cohen is Israeli and that she is Jewish, with anti-Zionism and antisemitism fusing in some posts, as they tend to do more and more these days. This subject, since it points to the fact that Jews lived in the land of Israel hundreds of years before Islam was established, whipped social-media users into a particularly petulant storm of grievance.
Jews have been living in the Land of Israel not for “hundreds of years” before Islam appeared early in seventh century, but for more than two thousand years before there was a single Muslim in the world.
Having Mary played by Noa Cohen, a 21-year-old actress from Israel, has enraged both the antisemites and the anti-Israel activists who always manage to overlap. They apparently cannot accept the idea that Mary was a Jew and — horribile dictu — so was Jesus.
Here are some of their hysterical remarks:
An X user called America First ZOE (AFZ) posted an image of Cohen’s Instagram account, writing, “A disgusting Jew got the part. lol.”
Red Pill Media wrote, “Jews created this and the actors are jewish. No thanks.”
Kathy, an X user whose bio reads, “It’s Palestine. It will always be Palestine,” wrote, “F**k you. I’m an offended Catholic. F**king have an Israeli play Mary? May you all be f**king smited. Blasphemous”
Apparently there are still a great many people who cannot accept the idea that Mary was Jewish, and so was Joseph, and so, of course, was Jesus. It’s just too upsetting. So please don’t upset them by trying to make them believe that tall tale about a Jewish Mary. How could a good Christian girl like Mary possibly be played by a “disgusting Jew”?
Can you imagine the outrage of having a cast of Jews playing a cast of Jews? It’s a Zionist plot. Everyone knows the Zionists call Mary a “whore” and reject her son — because both of them, obviously, were “Palestinians.” Why didn’t Netflix remain true to history and choose “Palestinians” to play the Holy Family?
Jeff Stan wrote on X/Twitter, “Mary was not a ‘Jew’.” Adam Kout said, “As a muslim you have no right to insult mother Mary, one of the best female figures in Islam.”…
So Mary was “not a Jew” for some commentators. And for others, she was not only “not a Jew,” but “one of the best female figures in Islam,” right up there with little Aisha and Dalal Mughrabi.
Imagine how unpleasantly surprised Jeff Stan will be if he ever discovers that Mary was indeed Jewish, despite his furious claims to the contrary, and how mortified Adam Kout will be to find out that she was not “one of the best female figures in Islam.” And “America First AOZ” will learn that no one in his right mind would agree with his description of the beautiful Israeli girl who plays Mary, Noa Cohen, as a “disgusting Jew.”
Red Pill Media saw a sinister Jewish plot behind the movie — “Jews created this [movie] and the actors are jewish. No thanks.” Then the anti-Israel brigade chimed in, with chatty Kathy (whose on-line biography says “It’s Palestine. It will always be Palestine”) nicely blending her anti-Israeli animus with antisemitism, writing, “F**k you. I’m an offended Catholic. F**king have an Israeli play Mary? May you all be f**king smited. Blasphemous.” And Salim and Adam claimed her for Islam. And Jeff insisted “Mary was not a Jew.”
Beautifully expressed, by all of you. Take a bow, Kathy, Jeff, Adam, Salim, Red Pill Media, tutti quanti. Really, I can’t imagine a more informative display.

The ignorance is incredible! If any ever studied history, read a bible or studied archeology they would know that Jesus’s family, him, the apostles, were all Jewish. They were ruled by Rome at that time but it was Israel. Palestine was created by the Romans from the Philistinesbecause they were enemies of Israel. The Romans were insulting the Jews. Denying and hating Jews is insulting God. The Jews have never lost a war. Be careful. God is watching.

How can anyone be that stupid? Why read the Bible (sadly, many Catholics and others don’t.; evidently “kathy” never has, as Paul wrote about those “rotten sayings not coming from one’s mouth) where it makes plain that “Mary was most favored among women” of the Jews, if one is not going to accept what the Scripture says?
There are more than 300 Scriptures which apply to the Messiah (Christ). Some tell where He would be born, others tell why He would die. All of them written down by Jews. Jesus is called in the Bible “The King of the Jews.” He was not the child of some woman from Greece or another ancient place. His mother was a Jew, His adoptive father was a Jew, His brothers and sisters and cousins were all Jews, as were His Apostles and the very earliest disciples.
Jesus, his mother Mary and Joseph lived according to the Law of Moses because they were all Jews.
What is “disgusting” is that these people are so fixated on their hatred that Truth does not matter to them.

All 100% true, somehistory.
You definitely know your Bible.

Thank you, James. I truly appreciate your comment…high praise, indeed.

“……have an Israeli play Mary? May you all be …….. smited. Blasphemous” The mother of Jesus was not a Jew in this “educated” person’s mind. That wouod be blasphemous itself in 1900, certainly ignorant.
It clearly shows that an education today is a thin veneer of the once required languages and reading of classical works for an understanding of philosophies and world histories. Reading the Bible and understanding its histories was an assumed minimum to apply for acceptance by a Western university.
Today, there is ignorance of both the Bible and the Quran, the foundation readings of the two most powerful religious philosophies which cannot be homogenized. Both should be required reading to graduate from institutions of “higher” learning.
Thinker1 says
Surely you know Jesus was blue eyed with blond hair. No way was his mother mideastern. I’ve seen the pictures.
Westman says
Well observed 😉. Jesus most likely looked like a typical Roman with a tan, more like images of Socrates as a young man.
somehistory says
Jesus had longish hair and a beard. Probably the olive skin as so many Jews have.
The difference is, He was perfect, so no flaws in skin, features, etc.
We can only imagine how He looked.
What matters is the Truth that He came for everyone who wishes to have ‘life in abundance.’
His mom was given a great honor in being chosen to be His mother. What a blessing.

What I love about Jesus was that he was a real man -not a movie star.
somehistory says
Jesus has all of the attributes for the Part He has in bringing about God’s promises. He was not a wimp as some have portrayed Him. He was kind to all, but He was also firm and not accepting of, nor ‘tolerating,’ evil from His enemies.
Even Pilate said “See. The Man.”

People all over the world have depicted Jesus and the other figures of the Bible as themselves–this is not in itself racist or ignorant–you find it in Europe, in Ethiopia, in Latin America, in Asia.
But certainly anyone who is even vaguely well educated about Christianity knows that Jesus–and his mother Mary–were Jews from the Levant.

Yes; thank you. Given that there was no physical description of Jesus included in Scripture, He could have had any given set of physical characteristics and many diverse peoples have seen fit to view Him through their own lens, as may have been the original intent. Any painter would probably have used models available in his own milieu. I’ve never personally seen this blonde, blue-eyed version so oft mentioned. We were taught, btw, as I’m guessing both you and somehistory were, only that He was a Jew of lengthy and prominent lineage. I have never personally encountered anyone taught otherwise.
I have encountered much commentary (since Oct. 7) on websites I formerly enjoyed that is quite toxic with respect to Jews. Many commenters are Catholic or muslim. I take this as a matter of Catholics’ numerical strength, not necessarily as representing Catholics in general.
somehistory says
HP, I have seen many paintings which were for the purpose of depicting Jesus. All of them had brown hair about shoulder length. Trimmed beard and lightly brown skin.
As you say, it could be the intent that everyone sees Him as the representation of their own kind.
I have also seen many male Jews. Some were incredibly handsome. I imagine that Jesus, being perfect, would look even better. But it’s His being like His Father, which no man has seen, that matters.
Incidentally, a painter whom I know well, was asked by a woman to paint her portrait with Jesus alongside and she wanted Him painted Black (her color).
And the Catholics I have known, were not really acquainted with what the Bible says, only what their priests tell them it says.
As for Jesus’ linage, the Bible makes plain, even to the Tribes from which Mary (the tribe of Levi) and Joseph came (Judah), that Jesus was born a Jew.
Due to the two tribes, Jesus would be in the line of Priests and Kings.
so He is both King and Priest, “according to the manner of Melchizedek.”

The “Mary” whom the Muslims adore is not only the mother of their Eesa but also the sister of Aaron and Moses. You know, the same Moses whose Pharaoh ordered his vizier Haman to build a tower reaching to heaven. Talk about “intersectionality!”

The entire Holy Family is probably rolling over in their graves…….if not rolling over laughing. Just more hate and nonsense to add to what’s been done to Jews in their names over the last two millennia.

They would have preferred that a Palestinian Muslim played the part of Mary, as they
insist that Jesus was a Palestinian.
Just read this, I would not be surprised if it was the whole of the Muslim world.

Up until 1948, all Palestinians were…Jewish. At the time of the Crucifixion, all were Judean, Samarian, or Galilean and they all practiced the Hebraic religion, except the Romans. Palestine was not ‘created” until about 150 years after the Crucifixion. But the claim that Jesus was a Palestinian is common among Palestinians, even the pseudo-educated.

Accuracy is unimportant to so very many people.

How come it is not a black woman casting as Mary? Or even better, a trans black woman, Netflix must be racist.and sexist, and homophobia. Islamophobia too, maybe.
But at least it is not Chistianophobia or Jewsphobia, because there is no such thing ever. Uproar for a Jews woman playing a Jews woman certainly is well justifiied and not Jewsphobia.
(It is a sarcasm)

Actually even I am shocked at the pure ignorance of Americans or Catholics. Sounds like a great movie to put cracks in their Myths. I thought everyone knew Jesus was Jewish. The last supper was Seder. I thought people knew what the West labeled Palestine the holy land at least included Israel. Palestine the holy land was Israel before the region was Romanized. Palestra was the Goddess of the art of wrestling and when Greeks were in there ruling they had Greek the official language. Yisrael in Hebrew is ‘The one who wrestled el.’ as in Jacob whose name was then changed to Yisrael. Greeks knew this so translated it into Palestinian meaning Followers (ine) of the one who wrestled. Rome changed it to the whole region to erase the Ysrael importance. Actually Philistines had nothing to do with it. Only that Arabic has no P so Falestinian and Filistinian sound alike. The sea people from the pirate islands of the Aegean were not Semitic.
Hope Netflix shows this All over.

Racially the Jews of the biblical era would most certainly have been Semites just like the Arabs. Certainly there would have been some DNA injected by the Greeks, Romans, Babylonians, etc. who ruled the area at different times but that DNA would have found its way into the entire population in the area.
Ms. Cohen may have some ancestry that is not purely Semitic but so what? Mind you I don’t think the distractors care about that. They just care that she’s Jewish.
I don’t seem to recall a big rhubarb about Charlton Heston playing Moses in the Ten Commandments or Russell Crowe playing a gladiator from Spain in Gladiator although neither were ethnically correct.
Just anti-Semitism pure and simple.
