Given the important historic relationship and alliance between the US and Israel, it wouldn’t be in the Biden administration’s best interests to abstain or support such an obscene UN resolution, despite its past betrayals. Most Americans want to see America “help diplomatically resolve” the Israel-Hamas war. An unconditional ceasefire amounts to pure meddling in the business of a democratic country. Also, to make such a radical anti-Israel move now, given the incoming Trump administration, wouldn’t be prudent.
It remains disturbing how many countries that consider themselves free have not fully blamed Hamas and Hizballah for causing civilian deaths, or exerted all possible pressure on the jihad groups that are bent on destroying the Jewish state.
“U.S. vetoes UN Israel-Hamas ceasefire resolution with lone ‘No,'” by Mike Wagenheim, Jewish News Syndicate, November 20, 2024:
The United States vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an Israel-Hamas ceasefire on Wednesday morning, citing its failure to condition a halt in hostilities directly to the release of the hostages, whom Hamas continues to hold in the Gaza Strip.
“We could not support an unconditional ceasefire that failed to release the hostages,” Robert Wood, deputy U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, told the council.
Wood accused Hamas — and not Israel — of blocking a negotiated ceasefire, and cited Israel’s reference for a temporary ceasefire and a phased release of hostages.
Washington cast the lone vote against the measure among the 15-member body. It is one of five permanent members of the council that has veto power.
The E10, a group of the council’s 10 elected members, put the resolution forward at Algeria’s urging. The North African country is the Security Council’s de facto representative for the Palestinians and the Arab and Muslim world.
Amar Bendjama, Algeria’s envoy to the global body, called it a “sad day” for the council and claimed that the Jewish state has “impunity in this chamber.”
The vetoed resolution demanded an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire, as well as the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages who remain in Gaza.
It rejected “any effort to starve Palestinians,” and demanded immediate access to basic services and humanitarian assistance for civilians in Gaza. It also called for aid to enter the Strip at scale and be delivered, including to “civilians in besieged north Gaza.”….

It’s good that Blinken this time didn’t do what John Kerry did in 2016: allow an anti-Israel resolution to pass the UN Security Council. That was one thing I was nervous about
There should be no ceasefire, only complete surrenders by both Hamas and Hizbullah

I don’t get it. The resolution of course cannot bring about the release of hostages, but, according to this very report it does call for that. “Calling for” both things, a ceasefire and the release of hostages, being all the Security Council can do, seems like the right thing, doesn’t it?
Keeping in mind of course that the whole thing is another attempt to make Israel lose the war of self-defense it is engaged in. But I’m not sure I see why the U.S. is caviling at the resolution not releasing hostages when it can’t do that anyway, and does “call for” their release.

A report from a different source said that there was no mention of the release of hostages and that was the *reason* for the veto. I cannot recall the specific source, but it was on the msn feed.

Beside the fact that it called for a “permanent” ceasefire, which hamas would not honor., but Israel would be held to by everyone.

Devon, this UN resoluton *not* calling for the release of the hostages was the very reason the US vetoed it:
“US vetoes UN resolution on Gaza ceasefire over hostage release condition”
“The resolution that was put to a vote demanded ‘an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire to be respected by all parties’.
The United States has vetoed a UN resolution calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, stating that it did not make the release of hostages a condition…”

U.S. only country to veto UN Israel-Hamas ceasefire resolution
………………………………………………
That every other nation is calling–whether they realize it of not–for breathing space for Hamas to rearm and attack Israel again is appalling, but unsurprising.
At last the US didn’t pile on.
