‘Palestinian’ Owner Kicks Jewish Customer Out of His Café

In Oakland, California, a Jewish father, accompanied by his five-year-old son, wanted to have a cup of coffee at the Jerusalem Coffee House. He happened to have a Star of David affixed to his baseball cap. That was enough to infuriate the “Palestinian” owner of the café, who then ordered him off the premises. As an antisemitic act, this is most minor, but disturbing nonetheless, as one among many hundreds, or thousands, of similarly trivial acts of antisemitism — along with those that are not so trivial — that are committed every day in this country. A Jewish resident of Oakland, Calif., and his five-year-old son appeared on video being harassed and forcibly removed from a local cafe by its anti-Israel owner over the weekend for wearing a hat that brandished a Star of David, drawing condemnation from local Jewish leaders as well as Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA).

Video of the incident, which began circulating online on Tuesday, shows Abdulrahim Harara, the owner of Jerusalem Coffee House in North Oakland, speaking to Jonathan Hirsch and his son over the former’s hat, which has a Jewish star emblazoned on the front. Harara said that Hirsch’s cap was “a violent hat, and you need to leave,” as Hirsch’s five-year-old son began crying.

Harara, whose family is from Gaza and who has used his establishment’s menu to honor terrorists such as the late Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, said that he wasn’t asking Hirsch to leave because his hat had a Jewish symbol, but then repeatedly asked if he was a Zionist. Another worker at the shop later accused Hirsch of inciting a problem by coming to the cafe as a Jew, something a female co-owner of the business pushed back on in the moment. Hirsch and his son came into the business looking for a bathroom to use, and played chess at one of the tables in the store while waiting for a coffee he ordered.

After Harara repeatedly ordered Hirsch and his son to “get out,” Hirsch responded that Harara was discriminating against a protected class, as part of a religious minority, by refusing him service for being Jewish. The female co-owner of the establishment told Hirsch that he was in a shop “owned and run by Palestinians,” something Hirsch noted did not mean they were entitled to deny him service for being visibly Jewish. The co-owner incorrectly stated that any establishment would have the right to deny service to customers for being gay, which Hirsch also pushed back on.

Harara eventually called the police despite saying that it was “against my ethos” to utilize law enforcement. When police arrived, Hirsch was eventually removed from the store for alleged trespassing, which the officer said she was enforcing to separate him from Harara. He said that once outside, Harara walked out and was shouting at his son that, “Your dad’s a b****.”…

Speaking to Jewish Insider on Wednesday about the encounter, Hirsch alleged that one of the employees made a lewd comment to his son as they were being removed from the premises, at which point he said the individual tried to push him out of the store. He also said that the officer, who was not identified in the video, allowed Harara to film her clipboard as she filled out his information, with his driver’s license listing his home address on top of the forms.

Now Harara, and whomever else he cares to share the information with, have Hirsch’s home address. It’s not difficult to imagine a supporter of Yahya Sinwar — as Harara apparently is, because on October 7, 2023, he posted a new menu that included a juice called “Sweet Sinwar”— choosing to harass Hirsch at his home.

Harara is breaking a federal law. “The Federal Civil Rights Act of 1964 states that no business (public or private) serving the public can discriminate based on a customer’s national origin, sex, religion, color or race.” Will the feds charge Harara with violating that act? Could he be fined? What about the way in which his behavior scared Hirsch’s five-year-old son? And he not only kicked Hirsch and his son out of the café, but followed them out on the street to shout obscenities at them. Hirsch needs to find a lawyer — many will. be eager to take the case pro bono — to sue the pants off Harara for violating his civil rights by refusing to serve him, and for trying to intimidate both him and his son — who was left traumatized and tearful — even after they had left the café.

Imagine the national attention that would be given in the case of a Jewish café owner who refused service to a Muslim customer, forced him to leave the premises, and followed him out on the street to yell obscenities at him. It would make the national news. CAIR would not be alone in calling for the café owner to be punished and his cafe to be shut down. The same demand would come from Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and California’s former Attorney General, Kamala Harris.

  1. Sue that terrorist-loving cafe owner! Get the most vicious attorneys you can (whether Jewish or Gentile) and go after him!

    Also, organise boycotts against the cafe! Anyone who would have a “Sweet Sinwar” cocktail doesn’t deserve any business at all from any decent person!

    By the way, Sinwar is dead and roasting in the lowest rung of Hell! All his stolen billions of dollars cannot buy him a single drop of water.

    • Lawsuits for discrimination by denying service to someone based on religion or perceived religion comes with the discriminating party paying the plaintiff his attorney’s fees if the plaintiff is successful. California probably also has state laws that parallel the federal statutes. This Pali, if sued, better be prepared to pay Hirsch substantial bucks up front to settle the lawsuit, or face a major attorney’s fee bill (both his own and Hirsch’s) if he later loses.

  2. I can bet that there exists Libertarians who’d stand up for Harara’s right to discriminate, and decide who he does business w/, or not. In the same way Microsoft could refuse to work w/ Gab, Amazon w/ Parler and so on. I can also bet that the same people wouldn’t dare concede that if a non-muslim business owner wanted to ban muslims from his business, they wouldn’t be granted the same latitude

  3. First of all, every Jew and every honest person, should avoid any business owned, operated and/or employing mozlums. Deny them earning any money not given them by their kind.

    Second, the police officer needs to be investigated for her conduct. Is she also a mozlum, supportive of mozlums or just stupid? Because she should have informed the cafe slug that he had to *serve* the Jew and his child according to the Law. She should have told the slug that he was violating Federal Law; and if he continued with his discriminating actions, the DOJ would be sending him subpoenas..

    Third, as noted by others, the Jew should hire the best attorney he can find….and there are many who specialize in these days with taking cases such as this…who will take the case all the way to Roberts and the Court of nine if need be.
    Make the palestinean and his co-owner, his employees and any other slugs involved sorry they ever stepped foot in the country.

  4. Oakland is a cesspool. Their Police force is totally DEI. The professional Police have left, or retired if they could. Those that a still there are there because they are in to for and would lose their retirement benefits or could not be hired anyplace else.

    The Father has the Cop on a HIPPA violation and that is federal That is at least a 5 year sentences

    The Palestinians in the middle east and the Arab Muslims leaders are sure that Ismail Haniya, and the other leaders of Hamas have the full responsibilities for all what happened in Gaza.

    Now the western countries become the place that all Muslims terrorists have the freedom and the power to break the law and the constitutions.

  7. They don’t even know how to run a coffee shop so how can it be expected of them to run a small piece of land like Gaza? These Palestinians are an enraged, wrathful people for whom Peace with Jews is a dirty word.

    They foam at the mouth at the sight of a Star of David and demand to live next to if not on top of Jews.

    They are embittered that every war they urged on their Arab “brothers” to attack Israel on their behalf only to lose to Israel and see their armies, tanks and airplanes destroyed and be disgraced by little Israel.

    They are raving mad that their “glorious Oct 7th massacre” of Jews complete with gang rapes, burning alive Jewish infants and beheading them only lasted one day and then saw Israel turn Gaza into a pile of rubble and at least half of their “grand” Hamas army killed.

    They are a people who stab their own friends in the back as they did to Kuwait.

    The Arab world wants nothing to do with them and their only hope is the anti-Semitic people of the West, institutions like the UN, and Westerners too stupid to carry Palestinian flags in their parades while their own people suffer due to their own idiocy and imbecility.

      If the Jewish man in the story had worn a cap or shirt with the image of Einstein on it, would that Sinwar-loving cafe owner have kicked him out because Einstein was Jewish? Probably!

      Same if he had worn a cap or shirt with music bands such as Beastie Boys, (or KISS, or Rush, or Alan Parson’s Project, or Culture Club, et cetera, et cetera…) just because they have (or have had) Jewish members!

      Most Muslim countries have average IQs in the low 80 point range (that is, 80 to 84 points), and some even lower than that.

      I’m not sure, but I think the average IQ in Palestine is, indeed, 80. Then, they have been further stultified by all the anti-Semitic, anti-Israel, anti-kuffar brainwashing they have received from Islamist groups like HamArse!

    I live here, and had not heard of this story (although it turns out that it was covered on KTVU). This cafe is just a couple of miles from my home, although I have never patronized it–and now, of course don’t intend to.

    The most appalling thing is not even that the Muslim thug wanted to oust the Jewish customer–sadly not a great surprise–but that the Oakland police did his dirty work for him, although this *is a public place*. Are Jews now prevented from appearing in public in Oakland?

    Would the same happen if the customer was being removed because he was Black, or Hispanic, or Asian? I doubt it. Also, crime is infamously *rife* in Oakland–it has been difficult to get the police to come out if you are suffering a car jacking or mob theft–but they seem to have manpower to push around non-violent Jews patronizing cafes.

    I have taken to wearing Star of David earrings on Saturdays in solidarity with Jews and with Israel–so I guess the same could have happened to me.

    • Gravenimage: good points. Also, if an Israeli citizen who was non-Jewish (such as an Arab Muslim, or Arab Christian, or a Druze) had gone in that cafe wearing a cap with a Star of David, or an Israel T-shirt, they probably would have gotten similar treatment.

        • Another thing that is richly ironic and hypocritical, is that the cafe owner and staff are accusing the Jewish man of being violent simply for wearing a hat with a Star of David, while their menu includes a cocktail called “Sweet Sinwar” after yellow-bellied Yahya Sinwar! Who’s the violent party here?!

          How do you say “chutzpah” in Arabic??

  11. Ploome: the simple answer is, no, they don’t belong in the U.S. or in any other (mostly) civilised country.

    If they don’t want to respect and obey the U.S. laws and Constitution (like the ranting and raving cafe owner in this story), and treat non-Muslims (including Jews) as equals, then they should get their gluteous maximuses forcibly EXPULSED (even if they were born in the USA)!

    My ex wife lives in Berkeley next door to Oakland and used to have a restaurant at the local Museum in Oakland and my ex wife is a 100% supporter of Biden-Harris-Obama-Clinton Gang and she wants Elizabeth Warren to be POTUS and my ex wife is second generation Russian Jewish… Go figure,
    I wonder if she ever goes into that ”palestinian Coffee joint.

    • Hmm….I wonder how the cafe owner and staff would react if she went in there wearing a shirt reading, “Jews for Palestine?” (Though that’s as silly as Queers for Palestine, or Chickens for KFC, etc.)

  14. Interestingly, Jonathan Hirsch has a video containing irrefutable evidence that he was discriminated against – in a café open to the public – for being a Jew.

    I see a MEGA lawsuit.

  16. I live in Canada and I make an effort not support any business that is run by a Muslim as well as any restaurant that has Halal meats on its menu.
