Iran’s Sharia-based penal code stipulates that “the first occasion” of theft is punishable by the amputation of four fingers from the right hand. This is often ignored in practice, however, and finger amputation performed on repeat offenders. The hardened recidivists get the whole hand chopped off.

The two brothers of Kurdish origin each had four fingers on their right hands amputated by a guillotine machine at the prison in the city of Urmia in northwest Iran on Tuesday, according to reports.
They were then transferred to hospital for medical care, the reports added.
The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) said Shahab and Mehrdad Teimouri were initially arrested in 2019 on theft charges and sentenced to imprisonment and finger amputation….

A person steals….because they have no job and need to eat, feed the kids, buy something. A person has no job because….they are disabled, they are *users* and can’t hold a job, there are no jobs available which they can do.
A person steals because….they have a low-paying job and need something more.
Now, these two will have even fewer options. Most people are right-handed (as my left-handed daughter said something about the majority just haven’t overcome the handicap of righthandedness). So their right hand is now incapable of doing many of the jobs that might have been possible before.
If they are allowed out of prison, and can get a job, they’ll have to retrain their brains to be able to use their left hand more efficiently. They may not succeed.

Two moslem thieves get punished for their theft in exactly the way they knew could happen. Barbaric it may be but it is their country and their way and they knew the risks. Boo hoo. Why would anyone be upset ? Thats two moslems who will never build bombs and who now hate the Islamic regime of Iran more than they ever did Israel or the USA. Its a win win for the civilised world.
BTW Can you set a time delay Claymore ouside of a Tehran mosque with one hand. Anyone know their postal address and where we can organise mail delivery of half a dozen Claymores. I already checked Amazon, Ali Express, Temu and Ebay. Maybe I should check CIA toys by mail next.

It’s totally barbaric of course. This is not meant either to justify or defend this barbaric crowd.
But they only seem to be a few hundred years behind western civilization in the area of punishing criminals and in some cases even less. For example, in the mid 19th century England penalized pickpockets by hanging them. Corporal punishment existed in Canada for some offences, most notably rape, until the late 1960s. When did France stop using the guillotine?
If we go back further we find the various Inquisitions (most notably the Spanish one). The Reign of Terror in France in the 1790s was hardly less cruel. Etc., etc., etc.
It’s true that we haven’t used the rack or drawn and quartered anyone in a while since we have become more humane since such punishments were in vogue.
It’s horribly barbaric but we can hardly expect the entire World to keep in lock step with every advance in civilization. After all, such enlightenment didn’t happen here over night either.

Rarely, there was a large movement in Britain to reform the “Bloody Code”. These draconian penalties largely ended in 1823, and completely by 1832. There is no such public movement in Iran to end amputations–this would be deemed un-Islamic.
