Quebec was flooded with pro-Palestine protests on Thursday as 85,000 students across 13 university campuses went on strike for two days to demand their universities divest from Israel.
According to one of the organizing groups – Coalition de résistance pour l’unité étudiante syndicale (CRUES) – the strikes were designed to coincide with the opening of the NATO conference in Montreal. CRUES accused Nato of refusing aid to Palestinians, and of approving of “the ongoing genocide.”
The main protest took place in Concordia University in Montreal, but was joined by students from McGill and Dawson college. The latter cancelled all classes on Thursday out of “concerns about the safety of students and employees on the day of the boycott,” Canadian news reported.
Of the 85,000 strikers, 11,000 were Concordia students, who were coordinated by 11 student groups and one faculty group, according to the university’s The Link newspaper.
According to CTV News, a protest leader led a chant saying “Listen to the ICC,” which comes just after the court announced arrest warrants against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
One student told CTV News that the protest took up all 12 floors of the main Concordia building, and that “Free Gaza” was spray painted on lockers.
The protesters also distributed flyers, and overturned garbage cans….
Apparently words were not enough to convey the depth of these students’ feelings. Spray-painting lockers, overturning garbage cans, stomping on Israeli flags, and vandalizing campus buildings were apparently deemed useful means of expressing their anger.
Ahead of the strikes, Concordia sent an email to staff and students calling on them to “denounce violence in all its forms.”
Apparently, that email had little effect on the students who have now descended into hate-maddened calls for the destruction of the Jewish state, and for violence — “intifada now” — against Israeli Jews. And at least one student called for “the final solution,” which as everyone knows has only one meaning: the murder of all Jews, everywhere.
Who is behind such a large-scale protest, that was timed to coincide with a meeting of NATO members in Montreal? Not just the students themselves, one suspects, but as Hillel Montreal says, the protest was “internationally coordinated,” meaning by Hamas operatives abroad sending orders to Hamas operatives living in Montreal. About 12% of the population in Montreal, that is 240,000 people, are Muslims. How many of those “students” were not students at all, but local Muslims, who swelled the ranks of the protesters? One assumes that at the end of this two-day protest, the police will have in custody those who have vandalized university property, and we should derive from their reports some sense as to how many non-student Muslims were involved in these carefully planned “student” protests.

This ‘one’ is not assuming anything of the sort. Going by what has been allowed by the pm and his crew, little law enforcement…if any… should be expected.

The Universities mentioned are English-speaking, and many students there are Jewish; and, as everywhere, increasingly there are Muslim immigrants, as well as students. According to reports we keep hearing, some aren’t there to study.
Many alumni are Jews who give large donations to Concordia for example! Hard to imagine this kind of disgrace will be tolerated, but then again, look at the world we now live in.
I know people in Montreal, and have been there. It has an established Jewish population which is very active in the community, the source of the famous Montreal smoked meat for sandwiches, and the popular St-Viateur Bagel. The garment district was largely Jewish and Italian in bygone days, and contributed a lot to the economy. The Arab population was not that significant, apart from Christian Lebanese who fled their homeland. I haven’t been back there in a long time, but I’m sure the demographics have changed visibly. There must have been mosques? I don’t recall seeing any. But lots of synagogues, and Lebanese restaurants!
It’s like Paris, I am sure I’d no longer recognize it, it’s been a couple of decades. There have always been Arabs, and some places were not safe at night, just because it is a large city with crime, etc. but many days I wandered freely and in security all over the city, by myself. Now I wouldn’t go there if you paid me. Just read Trip Advisor sometime, the recent blurbs from women in particular. No merci!
