Samuel Tadros is an Egyptian-American researcher who has been following the signs in the Islamic world, among those who think for themselves, of a turn toward atheism.
Several years ago, he spoke to an interviewer at Al-Hurra TV, an Arabic-language network which is supported by the U.S. government, and can be seen in the Middle East and North Africa. A summary of his discussion can be found here.
Egyptian-American researcher Samuel Tadros said in a March 13, 2020 show on Al-Hurra TV (U.S.) that there is an increase in atheism in the Middle East because the religious discourse is failing to give people answers that are compatible with science and that are satisfactory for the 21st century, because the conduct of organizations like ISIS and the Muslim Brotherhood has been causing people to doubt religious beliefs, and because the widespread availability of information through mediums such as the Internet is opening people’s eyes to new ideas. Criticizing Middle Eastern regimes that believe that the spread of atheism is the result of a Western conspiracy, Tadros said that it is the problems in Middle Eastern society that are driving people towards atheism. For more about Tadros’ show on Al-Hurra TV, see MEMRI TV Clip No. 7438.
Samuel Tadros: “If someone wants to be an atheist while I choose to be religious, that is a personal choice. Society should accept both of these. But we are talking about an increase… According to some surveys, and some things indicate this, there is an increase in atheism in the Middle East. I believe that this has to do, first and foremost, with the failure of the religious discourse. In other words, the religious establishments can no longer provide adequate answers to the minds of people living in the 21st century. It cannot be that I encounter Darwinian theory and all the evidence that scientific development entails, and then someone just tells me: ‘No, this is all just…’ Either you should try and present a religious discourse that is compatible with scientific evidence, or you will no longer convince me.
Darwin’s explanation of evolution (it should not be described as merely a “theory”) is rejected by most Muslims as being “unproven.” The more traditionalist the Muslim, the more likely he is to reject Darwin. The great majority of mainstream Muslims do not accept evolution, but some Muslim scientists argue that there is no direct contradiction between evolution and Islamic teachings, and therefore they accept it. There are many other developments in modern science that are not treated of in the Qur’an, even though Muslims are taught, and many believe, that all of knowledge is already contained in the Qur’an, to be teased out by Qur’anic scholars.
Islamists played a very important role [in the increase of atheism in the region] because they drove people away from religion. In other words, one cannot see things that were done in the name of Allah and say: ‘Yes, these are good things.’ The conduct of ISIS, and of the Muslim Brotherhood while they were in power… All the people who exploited religion for their political agenda… I believe that all this caused an increase in the number of people who have doubts about religion. In addition to all this, I believe that the Internet, or the availability of knowledge, have played a very important role [in this increase in atheism]. In the past, we were restricted to a certain framework of knowledge. Today, people have knowledge of many things, and this opens their eyes to things that ideas that they had not held before….
Nothing has so damaged Islam in the eyes of some of its Believers (and of Unbelievers too) as such groups as ISIS, Al-Qaeda, Boko Haram, Abu Sayyaf, Al Shebaab, and a dozen other terrorist groups. Many Muslims observed, recorded on the Internet, the horrors of the Islamic State, with its wholesale torture and murders of Christians, Shi’a, and Yazidis. They saw the peculiar pleasure that the homicidal maniacs of ISIS took in their mass decapitations of blindfolded ranks of the condemned, their taunting of their victims, their shameless delight in such practices as sexual slavery. The most barbaric scenes were delightedly videotaped and posted online by the proud ISIS executioners: the Jordanian pilot who was burned alive in a cage, the Yazidi girls who were subject to endless rapes and then often murdered, the ranks of terrified blindfolded hostages videotaped as their throats were cut, and so much more in the vein of Dr. Mengele and Fritz Stangl.

It is a ‘theory,” because it has not been proven that life began from nothing and then “evolved.” That is not to say that things don’t ever ‘evolve,’ but to say that everything in science proves that only evolution is responsible is not True. Many “modern” “21st” scientists believe in Creation.
Darwin presented his ideas on life as a theory; and it remains so.
Are these mozlums who are turning to atheism not afraid of being killed? Or, are they just combining the two beliefs…that their false god started things and then evolution took over?
I am glad that I am neither of these things. But each person has the right to choose what or not to believe, although devout mozlums say everyone must do as they do. Or else.

Atheism is not an affirmative belief that there is no god nor does it answer any other question about what a person believes. It is simply a rejection of the assertion that there are gods. No, Atheism is precisely what you say it isn’t: an affirmative belief that there is no god. In this context, it’s a definite belief that allah does not exist, and therefore, nothing in qur’an/sunnah is binding. Some of these ex-muslims have converted to Christianity, some to Buddhism, some to Judaism and some to Hinduism. Others have gone to full blown Atheism, while some are Agnostic but have declared that they’re no longer muslims
A lack of belief in gods falls somewhere on the spectrum of Agnosticism, which can be anything from “even-if-gods-exist-I-don’t-care-one-way-or-another” to “it’s-unknowable-whether-or-not-gods-exist”

2}How life itself evolved isn’t explained.Finding amino acids in the stanley miller experiment {or as Radio Astronomers confirm,in space}doesn’t mean anything

How do you get human consciousness from a primordial soup?

4}Scientific Consensus:not all scientists agree! If you disagree with the “scientific consensus” you could lose your job or tenure these days. Not ALL scientists agree with “climate change”:Geologists will confirm the Earth has survived much greater change in the past.

There are two options in the God discussion, belief in God, no belief in God. The consequences are very different. If you believe in God and it turns out there is no God it wont matter in the afterlife. If you dont believe in God and there is a God that choice will matter in the afterlife.

In proper terms regarding Earth God is and alien entity. In the scale of the Universe controlling only Earth would be akin to being a suburban homeowner in any give neighborhood. I think, that when we discuss God we should take in to consideration that regarding God we only have accounts from other humans. Not exactly the always honest one of all the species. So who knows, I think it is meant to be a puzzle inside of a mystery encompassed by a paradox.
In simple terms, too hard to even begin to explain.

The “big bang” theory is actually in accord with belief in a Creator. Who do you think initiated the bang? He did it all in one moment and then established the earth and all the creatures on it, including man and woman.

Exactly, Nola. An atheist was mocking Christians when he coined that term, “big bang theory.” He meant it in a wrong way, but then other atheists began using it for the way they ‘believe’ life and the universe came to be. Without a Life Source involved, of course.

Fred Hoyle: Intelligent Design Advocate
https://evolutionnews.org/2016/11/fred_hoyle_inte/
“I would like to correct a common misconception about the astronomer Sir Fred Hoyle. It is widely known that Hoyle was a proponent of panspermia, the notion of intergalactic “seeding” of planet Earth advocated by a number of atheists such as Francis Crick and Professor Brig Klyce. But it is important to recognize that panspermia need not be tantamount to an end-run around theism to a negation of God.
Hoyle is often regarded as a panspermia atheist, and his book The Intelligent Universe (1983) is cited as evidence for this alleged “fact.” Nevertheless, a careful reading of that fascinating book suggests otherwise. While Hoyle did argue for a version of panspermia, he insisted that “The origin of the Universe…requires an intelligence,” and he devoted an entire chapter to this topic.
He further stated, “Even after widening the stage for the origin of life from our tiny Earth to the Universe at large, we must still return to the same problem that opened this book — the vast unlikelihood that life, even on a cosmic scale, arose from non-living matter.” I would argue that far from being an atheist, Hoyle was in his own way an ID advocate who believed in a form of classical panentheism.”
࿗Infidel࿘ says
Even if Evolution was true, it doesn’t describe the beginning – the creation of amoeba, and how they may have evolved into higher beings. One theory that I’ve heard of, which I tend to believe even more, is that we are not native to Earth: our original ancestors came from somewhere else in Space, and settled here on earth. Of course, that would then beg the question of where they started, which then drives the question of whether a god was created/self-created before any of the other beings (since most faiths seem to assert that their deities have no beginning or end)
somehistory says
Dr. Hugh Ross says eventually earthlings will find evidence of life on other planets, but that it will have originated from Earth.
Some scientists managed to *create* some amino acids in a lab. But those acids didn’t spring up all alone; they had someone….the scientists….facilitating them by using other things already in existence. The most important things, their own brains, hands, etc.
RickJames says
So this isn’t a topic that interests me much, but all these questions have already been answered or the false claims debunked on Evolution and the origin of the the universe.
One simply has to research it and there are plenty of vids on Youtube that explain the answers very well.
So Evolution and the Big Bang are all based on scientific evidence, while ‘Creationism’ is based on pseudo-science and a lot of claims/assertions without any proof.
For example, some Christians believe that the Earth is 6,000 years old…and yet all the scientific proof shows the universe came into existence 14 billion yrs ago and the Earth is 4b yrs old. So ofc this refuses any religious based claims…because if it’s true then the Bible is wrong and must be rejected.
Ofc we also have evidence of fossils and carbon dating and other tools which all provide proof of an old Earth and universe.
I’m glad that people are curious about these topics so I hope they explore the science further and do their research. That’s how I eventually rejected religion in my teen years and never looked back.
RickJames says
One other point-though there’s a lot more I can say on it, I’ll keep it short…if you reject the entire body of work we call Science, contributed to by millions of very smart people, then what are you left with?
Magic…do you all really think that’s how we got here? Magic-some space ghost said “Let there be light” and poof everything appeared…isn’t that childish, delusional thinking or even madness?
Also how does an immaterial entity, which nobody has seen, create a material reality? Thes are all questions that Theists can never answer because it is founded on human imagination and ideas. Also where did this ghost come from? You answered a mystery with a mystery which doesn’t answer/solve anything.
Science tells us before there was the universe there was a vast energy field that formed a singularity spontaneously…that’s how we got the big bang. The creation of life on Earth is based on chemistry and biology.
Given a time frame of billions of years, it is plausible to chemicals could become more complex, form amino acids and eventually life that multiplies. Or the panspermia idea can apply…but it had to form somewhere first.

Not just the conduct of ISIS or MB. People with conscious and common sense should see how devoted muslims behave and should get repulse by that. Without death penalty for apostates, Islam would have died a log time ago.

Atheism has become a sort of religion unto itself. What I dont understand is why would you need to create a pseudo-religion to advance the denial of Gods existence. As with everyone, atheists can do what they want. But, if you dont believe in God why focus on God? Seems like a waste of time to me.
Perhaps an atheist can fill me in on what I am missing.

Precisely, and it has 2 sects. One is Communism, since it was important to remove all deities from the scene to make people worship Marx & Engels initially, and later, other success stories like Lenin, Mao, Che, et al. Other is the Libertarian Ayn Rand brand of Atheism, that doesn’t seek to impose itself on anyone, but is probably closer to PRCS’ definition of a “lack of belief” as opposed to “definite denial of any deity”. The latter, imo, falls somewhere b/w Atheism and Agnosticism (see my response to PRCS above)

True. Just not believing in gods does not make one a communist.
RickJames says
Every single human being is an Atheist, including yourself…it’s just that Theists haven’t really considered this question or truly understood what it means.
Do you believe in Allah? Thor, Zeus, Vishnu? …No? Then congrats you’re an Atheist also…it’s just that ‘regular’ Atheists simply go one god further and reject all gods.
Once you understand why you don’t believe in Allah and the other 6,000 man-made gods, then you’ll understand why Atheists don’t believe in your god.
Atheism isn’t a religion, it isn’t even a philosophy…it’s simply a rejection of god-belief because of one critical thing-evidence.
We live in a material-physical universe and there is no other world, realm, or dimension that exists outside our universe…if there was, we’d already know about it and science would be the first to tell us…not some old, bearded men running up and down mountains claiming to have divine knowledge.
If any gods actually existed, we’d have no doubts…then it’d no longer be religion or faith, and we wouldn’t be holding onto tenuous ‘beliefs’ that such spooks, ghosts, entities might or might not be real.
It’d be a known scientific fact and we’d all probably be living in constant fear of offending these gods with our behavior for fear of punishment, assuming they were real.
Right now people just believe in man-made myths, stories, fables about such beings without any proof for them. It’s basically the world’s oldest grift that people fell for and keep doing so every day they continue to treat imaginary ideas as real.
Why do Atheists focus on ‘God’…I think you mean religion. Just look at the havoc Islam is wreaking on the world today, you want us to ignore a death cult that has declared war on every man, woman and child on this planet?
Beliefs have consequences…all religions impact the world one way or another. As they are unfounded and outdated beliefs, as Atheist at the very least we’d like to see them all removed from government and prevented from influencing policies that directly affect human lives.
Anti-abortion policies kill girls/women on a daily basis due to medical complications or back-alley abortions. Lack of access to Euthanasia causes enormous pain and suffering for the terminally ill for example…because of the belief that life is precious and humans cannot take away what god has given them.
So ya you better believe Atheists have a serious concern with all religions, esp. when one person’s beliefs directly infringes upon or takes away the rights and freedoms of non-believers. Not to mention all the conflicts and wars that religions create because of their unproven beliefs.
All Christians know how that feels, because that’s what would happen to them if they lived in an Islamic state (or their nation became one). That’s how Atheists feel about Christianity and other religions.
somehistory says
“Every single human being is an Atheist,”
That statement is just as ignorant and wrong as what mozlums claim…that all humans are born mozlum.
And an atheist has nothing to fear from a Christian, but thousands of Christians have been murdered by atheists. For proof, read the book “Dark Agenda” by Mr. Horowitz.
Right now, China …an atheist nation…is persecuting Christians, trying to wipe them out. And the “west” has turned blind eyes and ears to the massacres of Christians going on in Africa.
Furthermore, very few unborn babies are murdered due to the woman having some kind of medical problem. Most are eliminated because the woman doesn’t want to be bothered by having a child.
And “back allery”…..speak to kermit gosnel….a licensed doctor…about his practice.
One last point: This nation was formed to give people Freedom….and most of the Founders were believers in Christ. Some didn’t directly believe, but they were not atheists. So people who believed in God and His Son are directly responsible for the Freedoms everyone is meant to have in the U.S….even atheists.
How many atheists appreciate that fact?
RickJames says
SH, I qualified that statement (we’re all Atheists) with strong reasoning, but sadly you chose to practice selective reading and ignorance by avoiding what I had said right after.
We are all born Atheists, because we have no concepts of any gods until your parents brainwash you with your beliefs.
If you were born in Saudi Arabia, you’d be a Muslim. If you were born in India, you’d be a Hindu, ofc if you’re born in Israel, you’d likely be Jewish, etc.
So in fact Atheism is the default position for everyone…but I was talking about your beliefs in comparison to other religions…and I think you know very well what I meant. You don’t believe in Allah, Muslims would call you an Atheist wrt their beliefs and so on.
True that Muslims foolishly claim we’re born Muslims, it’s just because of their indoctrination…it’s like fish swimming in water, they don’t know they’re floating in a liquid…same with brainwashed people, they are unaware their minds were marinated in a particular ideology.
Atheism is a rejection of all these beliefs because there are not based in reality or truth. Most Theists afaik don’t even know what evidence actually means…but it means verifiable in the real/material world.
So if I said I could fly, then that’s a testable, provable claim. As it is a false claim, because humans have no such ability, then it is untrue. We have no evidence for any gods, so people claim they choose to believe based on ‘faith’ which means nothing in reality.
If someone claimed fairies exist…it’s up to them to prove it, if they can’t then effectively they don’t exist. We don’t go around claiming to be ‘A-fairyists’….it’s the default position until there is evidence.
Atheist don’t have a religion or a church or a holy book that tells us to kill unbelievers, practically all other religions do preach hatred towards ‘infidels’ and some incite violence/killing and warfare.
Show me where Atheism tells people to kill people. As for China, it is a Communist, fascist country that just happens to be Atheist. You recall Nazi Germany was a Christian country that just happened to be fascist also, so should we say all Christians are Nazis?
This is where the saying ‘a little knowledge is a dangerous thing’ applies. It’s obvious some people who have a superficial understanding of deep, complex subjects tend to jump to the wrong and usually extremist conclusions.
It’s also obvious you’ve never researched the subject of abortion-do you think 68,000 women dying every year from no access to abortion is a small number? What do you care right? As long as it’s other people dying-they deserve it for refusing to be baby factories.
I tried to post a link but was unable to-search for article on google:
Unsafe Abortion: Unnecessary Maternal Mortality
One could say that Christians don’t want to be ‘bothered by raising someone’s else’s child’ but they sure love to tell girls/women to have babies they can’t afford and have to raise for 20 plus gruelling years of their lives, or should never have had because they were ra.ped. The hypocrisy is galling. Ofc rich Conserative pro-life women are the first to jump on a plane and go to a blue state to get an abortion where they are still legal. lol
There is no mention of any gods in the US Constitution, that was deliberate. The founders personal beliefs are debatable, but it’s clear that American freedom was based on godless secularism, so shouldn’t you be crediting Atheism instead?
Let’s also not forget not only were Christians invading, conquering, Christianizing other nations by fire and sword and having religious wars a few centuries ago…but they were also slaughtering one another over differences in beliefs…that’s why there’s 20,000 different denominations.
Like the Muslims, Christians can’t get along with each other or even agree on the fundamentals of the beliefs/truths that you hold. That’s what happens when you base your beliefs on imaginary sky daddies.
However to Christianity’s credit, at least it has evolved into a peaceful religion. Fortunately for Secularism in the West, Christianity is quickly dying off, in one generation or so, your death cult will be a minority and will have insignificant influence…already happening in Europe now, where countries have become Secular/Atheist majority. Why? Because people are waking up (thanks to the internet) and realizing that religions are built on a house of cards (of lies).
Eventually when all the believers of Christianity die off, then it’ll be considered a mythology, like the Greeks/Roman religions.
The real problem we all face is the growing global population of Muslims…and their tendency to violently force their sick, demented ideology on everyone. If they’re not deported, we’ll probably have WW3 to end that death cult.
gravenimage says
Rick, if you believe in any deity you are not an atheist.

Graven, I think you’re trying to lump all Theists together under the same diety and obviously you know that isn’t factual.
Do you accept we’re born Atheists (not believing in any gods) until your parents or society convinces you that a god exists?
If you don’t believe in Allah, (but you’re of another religion), you are an Atheist with respect to Allah, because you don’t believe in it.
So what do you have in common with other religions just because you happen to believe in a different god.
Do you think a Jihadist is going to say “oh you believe in Vishnu” so we’re ideological cousins, therefore I won’t lob off your head as Allah commanded?
Like I said, beliefs have real consequences…so you can tell that man you’re a Theist all day long, but you know what’s going to happen in that case. He still sees you as an unbeliever…because you don’t believe in his specific diety.

Evolution was considered and mostly settled long before Darwin. The ancient Greeks discussed it, and rejected (correctly) the “survival of the fittest” (unless a circular argument is used). Aquinas pretty much proved that most evolution is from intelligent recursion which agrees with science (but not necessarily “scientists”) of today. However, he doesn’t directly use the word “evolution” but explains that Adam would have been derived from other animals.
In the ancient Greek system, everything was made up of parts. Aquinas showed that the parts had to be as smart as the whole. Therefore appetites are passed from one generation to the next. Today, we know that DNA does exactly that.
