Why wouldn’t the Council of Islamic Ideology be outraged at Communist China’s persecution of Uyghur Muslims? Because they see the world in terms of strength and weakness. They see China as strong, and as beneficial for Pakistan economically for the moment, so they don’t dare say anything about the persecution of the Uyghurs. They see the West as weak, and so they constantly nag at it with “Islamophobia” nonsense.

Loyal readers of “Bitter Winter” knows Pakistan’s Council of Islamic Ideology. In July this year, Pakistan’s Supreme Court stated that members of the persecuted Ahmadiyya community are prohibited from professing their faith or preaching in public but can only do it inside their places of worship and private homes. The Council protested vehemently. It considered “scandalous” and “perturbing the whole nation” the fact that Ahmadis are allowed to pray and preach anywhere. “They must not be allowed to profess or preach in any manner even within their houses, community centers or in places of worship,” the Council’s declaration stated, “They must not be permitted to profess or preach openly, inside their houses or otherwise, as their actions directly desecrate the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Islam, the Quran, and the Sunnah. They should be unequivocally declared as apostates.”Unfortunately, the Council of Islamic Ideology is not a private organization, but a constitutional body charged with giving advice to Pakistan’s Parliament and government on Islamic issues. It seems now that among the “Islamic issues” the Council is expressing its opinion about is the Chinese treatment of Muslim Uyghurs in Xinjiang (which its non-Han inhabitants prefer to call East Turkestan). Its opinion happens to coincide with Chinese propaganda.
On September 25, the Council informed the world via Facebook that its members had been dined (although presumably not wined) by the Chinese in East Turkestan. The press release explained that, “An 11-member delegation of scholars led by Dr. Muhammad Ragheb Hussain Naeemi, Chairman of the Council of Islamic Ideology, returned after a successful 10-day visit to China at the invitation of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” which included Beijing and parts of East Turkestan. The delegation “held discussions with representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, mosque committees [part of the government-controlled China Islamic Association] in different cities, and leaders of the Communist Party.” One can imagine what kind of “information” they received.
With some confusions between provinces and “autonomous” regions (Xinjiang is not a province), Chairman Naeemi emphatically declared that “Muslims of Xinjiang, China’s westernmost province, have achieved economic and religious freedom due to the positive policies of the Chinese government.” The Council’s leader also praised China for eradicating extremism and terrorism in Xinjiang….

Uyghurs are Turks: they are every bit as sunni as Turkish Muslims, and even more than their neighbors to their west, who had been secularized by 7 decades of Soviet rule, and not re-islamized as much since. I don’t see how they can be bunched w/ Bahais
I recall one poster here back in the day describing the OIC as a crypto-caliphate. I think that it’s accurate, and it’s the best that muslims can hope for in terms of a caliphate

Not a bunching of belief. Any equivalence of societies with the same “brand” of Islam like Turks and Saudis looks more valid on paper than reality. Turks want to head up a new Caliphate. Do the Uyghurs share that notion?

The Uyghur movement officially calls its wannabe nation the “Republic of East Turkistan”. Turkistan is the collective name of 4 of the 5 -stans east of the Caspian – Kyrgyz, Kazakh, Uzbek and Turkmen. The Uyghurs consider themselves a part of that nation, rather than China
I don’t know where they stand on a caliphate, but I do think that they consider themselves a part of any pan-Turkic ethnic movement. They are more islamic than their neighbors to their West: they have, among other things, attacked Buddhist and Shaman entities in Xinjiang. I would put their religiosity somewhere b/w that of Turkey on one hand, and Kyrgyzstan on the other

I get Robert’s explanation that it is strength, but I think it’s something more than that. Namely, that the Chicoms don’t give a f🤬k about what the muslims worldwide think of them, and just do what they deem necessary. Otherwise, it’s not like Israel or India don’t show strength, but they do give more deference to the “international community”, whereas China gives a 🖕 if done to it. Even in cases where they directly impact the rest of the world, such as w/ the Chinavirus
In fact, one stunning fact about the ummah is that they don’t even care when Beijing has territorial claims on Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, areas that are clearly not even Han Chinese, for Beijing to make such a claim

Next, the Ahmadiyah must have permit to make their homes as their places of worship just like in Indonesia (although not legally). The catch is the permit will never be issued forever. So, it is a system by design to annihilate non muslims and non mainstream muslims like the Ahmadiyah.

I support other groups in China that should not be a part of China, such as Tibet or Southern Mongolia (Inner Mongolia in China) or Hong Kong/Macau/Guangdong or Manchuria. But the Uyghur movement is the one I don’t support
If China does disintegrate, I’d prefer that Xinjiang see that Buddhist & Tengri areas of that province go to Mongolia and Tibet, and that the Muslim areas get merged into Kyrgyzstan, which is right next door
