KABUL: Former wife of the legendary US boxer Muhammad Ali arrived in Kabul to reportedly open a stadium, a government official of Taliban said on Friday.
The head of the sports directorate of the government, Ahmadullah Wasiq told AFP that Khalilah Camacho-Ali, who was married to the late boxer for a decade from 1967, had arrived in Kabul.
State media cited the directorate as saying she was in the city “to build a sports stadium to be named ‘Pirozi’ (victory in Dari) and a sports association named after Muhammad Ali”.
In Afghanistan, women are barred from playing sports.
Born Belinda Boyd in 1950 in the United States, Camacho-Ali, like her world champion boxer ex-husband, converted to Islam after they married.
Muhammad Ali himself visited Kabul in 2002, a year after the US forces overthrew the first Taliban government, visiting a girls’ school in his role as a United Nations peace ambassador….
During the Taliban’s first rule from 1996 to 2001, public executions in sports stadiums were common.
Public corporal punishment has continued since their return to power and at least two public executions have been held in a sports stadium….

I know that both Muhammad Ali and his wifes were muslims, but I also recall reading some years ago about one of his grandkids being Jewish, & undergoing a Jewish ceremony, which he attended. Anyone have more details about that?
About this story, I think that Khalilah Camacho-Ali knows what islam is, but since she was lucky enough not to have a wife beating hubby, she’s fine w/ it

To be honest I don’t think this woman has the slightest idea what Islam is. Neither did her husband since when they converted there was essentially no English transliterations of the Islamic sources except for the Quran. So dawists could lie their heads off to gain converts. You can watch YouTube videos of Muhammad Ali, when talking about his conversion to Islam back in the 1960s, telling interviewers that his birth name was his “slave name.” Conned like so many black Americans into thinking Islam was about freeing slaves. When in fact he traded the name Cassius Clay, a fearless abolitionist, for the names of Muhammad and his son-in-law Ali. Both of whom bought, sold, captured, traded, and raped slaves.
As an aside, I thought the Taliban hated Western spectator sports as the Islamic State and other Salafis. I was under the impression the Taliban ONLY used stadiums for public executions. After all, when the IS controlled territory in Iraq and Syria the would flog teenagers if they caught them watching soccer on TV. And perpetrators of the November 2015 Paris attacks detonated their suicide vests outside the Stade de France stadium during an international soccer match (they wanted to blow themselves up inside but couldn’t get in). I know you Islamic reasoning why they targeted restaurants and cafes (alcohol) and the Bataclan nightclub (haram musical instruments, singing and dancing girls) but does anyone know the ‘scriptural” justification behind the salafi war on soccer? In my forty years of studying Islam I never found a specific prohibition. Of course soccer didn’t exist during the time of “the prophet” and his sahaba so maybe that’s the reason. It’s simply that since the first generation of Muslims didn’t play that silly infidel sport then they won’t allow it now. Instead they’ll force all Muslims to follow their example and concentrate only on approved Islamic activities. Praying five times a day, fasting during Ramadan, slaughtering and violently subjugating non-Muslims, and of course raping their wives (Surah 2:223) and sex slaves.

The late pop star Prince didn’t like his last name “Nelson” because he believed that it was a slave name meaning “Son of Nell.”
So, for a while he stopped usong the name “Prince” altogether, and used a strange, gender-like symbol.
Nonetheless, he didn’t convert to Islam, adopt an Arabic and/or Muslim name, and pretend that Islam had nothing to due with slavery.

And I never did, in my mind or if someone spoke of him, called him the mozlum name. He remained Clay to me.

Afghanistan used to have a small presence in Cricket, Football (Soccer), and Tae Kwon Do–but all of this seems to have been before the Taliban took over again. Its status now is unclear, and tbe Taliban was banned from attending the Paris Olympics. And yes–last time they were in power, they used sports stadia–including in Kabul–for executing their victims.
And this was not something that just happened over twenty years ago when they were last in power, but just earlier this year:
