Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Saturday that social media companies must moderate content on their platforms or else “we lose total control.”
Clinton told CNN host Michael Smerconish that while there have been some steps taken at the state level to regulate social media, she wants to see more done by the federal government to moderate content….
Clinton said she believes the issue should be “at the top of every legislative political agenda” and called for the repealing of Section 230 of the Communications Act, which protects online platforms from being held liable for third-party content, such as user content on social media. This immunity applies to the content itself and the removal of content in certain circumstances.
“We should be, in my view, repealing something called Section 230, which gave, you know, platforms on the internet immunity because they were thought to be just pass-throughs, that they shouldn’t be judged for the content that is posted,” Clinton said.
“But we now know that that was an overly simple view, that if the platforms, whether it’s Facebook or Twitter/X or Instagram or TikTok, whatever they are, if they don’t moderate and monitor the content, we lose total control,” she continued. “And it’s not just the social and psychological affects, it’s real life.”
Clinton said the social media companies should have their immunity stripped so “guardrails” could be implemented….

I agree with Hillary on this – it is past time for Section 230 to be repealed. All of the big social media companies violate it regularly with impunity, so why should they be protected from lawsuits?

But section 230 is about copyright violations (not free speech). If I post copyrighted material on Jihad Watch, without section 230, Jihad Watch can be sued.
Without section 230, the whole web would have to go dark and be controlled by criminal gangs.

We are definitely at a crossroads today. In the not too distant past conspiracy theories and other outright lies (often of a very dangerous type) would go only as far as the media would take them. They could be met face on by debate, the media, defamation suits and the like.
Today, however. these “ideas” can (and are) easily transmitted anonymously to millions in the blink of an eye with impunity and no accountability. There is very little, if anything, available to rebut such claims. Add to that the fact that most young people, who do not have either the education or experience to see through these claims, get their news and information from the Web and social media are easily misled by he who shouts the loudest.
Something must be done. Hillary may or may not be correct but something must be done or, in a very short time, western society will become unrecognizable.
“Freedom of Speech” implies a dialogue. Until recently that dialogue was possible. It been all but destroyed and must be restored.

I know from personal experience the damage they can do. And those who want to limit what I can write about them, say the strengthening of storms in recent years is all because of their favorite thingy….climate change.
