CBS News Has an Israel Problem: The Case of Marwan Al-Ghoul

CBS News was recently not just reporting the news, but became a news item itself, after it forced one of its best-known and best journalists, Tony Dokoupil, to meet with the “Race and Culture Unit” and to apologize for committing the sin of journalism. Dokoupil’s crime was that while interviewing the egregious Ta-Nehisi Coates on CBS Morning News, Dokoupil questioned some of Coates’ anti-Israel and, many would argue, antisemitic remarks in his latest book, The Message. This was good journalism, but leftwing members of CBS News staff did not want any cross-questioning of Coates; they were fervent supporters of his anti-Israel vaporings in The Message. Dokoupil had his supporters, such as CBS News legal affairs correspondent Jan Crawford, and there has been a backlash both at CBS News and outside, to the outrageous treatment of Dokoupil. He has kept his job, and it remains to be seen how he will do his journalistic work in the future, and how the CBS News brass treat him.

Now another employee of CBS News is in the news. He is the CBS news producer in Gaza, Marwan al-Ghoul, who, it turns out, has quite a record on social media for bloodcurdling antisemitic remarks that call into question his objectivity and his fitness to be a news producer. A Gaza-based producer for CBS News praised by higher-ups for his “resolve” has a history of denigrating Israel on social media, calling into question the publication’s potential bias against the Jewish state amid uproar over recent treatment of Jewish anchor Tony Dokoupil.

According to social media posts unearthed by the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting & Analysis (CAMERA), Marwan Al-Ghoul has “liked” various comments on social media that refer to Jews as “Nazis” and “murderers.” He has also penned lengthy screeds on social media which gush about the potential “demise” of the United States and Europe.

In 2022, Al-Ghoul “liked” a Facebook comment claiming Israeli Jews “are Nazi Zionist murderers whose crimes are silenced, covered for by the US and international complicity. The date of holding them accountable will reach them one day and our children do not forget.”

That same year, the CBS News producer “liked” a Facebook comment about Israeli Jews that read, “By no means do they count as human, these are monsters in a human body.”

Israeli Jews “do not count as human,” but “are monsters in a human body.” What would happen, do you think, if any CBS employee, in or out of the news division, had “liked” a Facebook comment that claimed “Palestinians are not human,” but “are monsters in a human body”? That offender would be fired in a New York minute.

In 2017, as Hamas fired rockets at Israel in response to the US recognizing Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, Al-Ghoul wrote that Gaza’s civilians should join the “permanent resistance” against the Jewish state.

In other words, Mohamed al-Ghoul wanted Gaza’s civilians to join Hamas in what he described as its “permanent resistance” — a “resistance” that consisted at the time of firing rockets into civilian areas of Israel. He was whipping up further violence against the Jewish state in the immediate wake of a barrage of rockets from the terror group Hamas. Wasn’t that enough to have him discharged as the news producer in Gaza for CBS News?

In 2018, he wrote that “there is no doubt that the United States of America is the greatest empire in the world and because Israel is its offspring and industry, it will not be able to breathe even one day if the American empire is gone. And because it is the year of God in his creation, America and Israel are about to go down, but when?”

His comments about America alone should have been enough for him to have been discharged by CBS News.. He calls America “the greatest empire in the world” and he means that not as praise, but as a curse, and he looks forward to a future where “America and Israel…go down.” With such bloodcurdling hostility to the US, his clearly wishing for its destruction, should an American news network be employing him? Won’t he fit in better as an employee of Al-Jazeera, or of Hezbollah’s Al-Manar, or of Iran’s Tehran Times?

In May 2022, Al-Ghoul openly questioned, “Are the Jews human like us?”…

Wasn’t that enough for CBS News to fire him? Again, imagine some newsman posting on social media any variant on that sentence: “Are the (Muslims, blacks, Chinese, Native Americans, Mexicans) human like us”? You know how fast he would be shown the door. But nothing happened to Mohamed al-Ghoul after he posted this antisemitic remark. He’s still the Gaza producer for CBS News.

It’s not only an “anti-Israel bias” that Marwan al-Ghoul has consistently exhibited. Asking aloud “are the Jews human like us?” and “liking” a Facebook post about Jews that read “By no means do they count as human, these are monsters in a human body” is not adequately characterized as an “anti-Israel bias.”

Given these hair-raising examples of his antisemitism, how likely is it that Marwan Al-Ghoul could be fair in reporting on the IDF’s campaign to root out Hamas in Gaza? CBS News has been given this information about his damning social media posts. What’s keeping Wendy McMahon, the chief of CBS News, from firing Marwan Al-Ghoul?

  2. What has the lady who supports Mr. Dokoupil, the head of the company which owns cbs, Ms. Redstone, had to say about the ghoul and his monstrous remarks?

    After seeing how Mr. Dokoupil was treated, it is no wonder that the mozlum ghoul has kept his job.

  3. Why doesn’t Tony Dokoupil quit CBS and either join someone else, or start his own podcast? Others who have gone that route have had varying degrees of success, but it’s not like CBS is doing great at the ratings

      I’m a guy who lived the age of the almost exclusive TV news format, BtI (Before the Internet). Today, I get my news exclusively from the Internet. I know for fact that younger generations get their news from the Internet more exclusively than I. TV news today is a dinosaur and we all know what happened to the dinosaurs.

      • Before 2016, I used to get my news almost exclusively from FNC. But after 2016, I saw the scenes shifting at Fox, after the exit of Roger Ailes and a few others. It was becoming more toxic, and on Election Day of 2020, I found an OANN stream and watched it instead

        Ever since Fox’s betrayal of the Right that year, I’ve dumped it, although these days, I do watch The Five. Nowadays, I watch a variety of podcasts – Dave Rubin, Megyn Kelly, The Blaze people (Glenn Beck, Sara Gonzales,…), Daily Wire people (Shapiro, Knowles, Walsh) as well as a few shows from Newsmax like Rob Schmitt and if I can get it, Andrew Wilkow on Sirius News Channel. That pretty much fills up my news consumption

    • I remember back in April 1993 when the Internet went live for the public. I thought at the time that this is the most awesome thing I ever could have asked for. I could see the possibilities. Now today, I am even more grateful for the Internet than I was way back when. There was never a Computer revolution. Computers were a gradual phenomenon. It was the Internet that unleashed the power of the Computer and transformed all of today’s life. I call it the Data revolution and it is just as significant to the World as the Industrial revolution.

      • I came to this country in 1992, and when I discovered NEXT workstations in our campus Computer Lab, it was a great discovery. At that time, the world wide web wasn’t much, but Usenet was the place where people did all their view sharing: it was the 90’s version of the comments sections of various outlets, be it news sites like this one, Facebook, Twitter, et al. On NEXT, there was an application called NewsReader, which was an excellent Usenet browser + posting platform. Unfortunately for me, I got hooked onto it, and only kicked the habit cold turkey, when I graduated

        After 2016, I saw John Nolte on Breitbart advocate cord-cutting, which meant discontinuing all cable and satellite services. It was almost a success, except that where I lived, Comcast was the only broadband internet service provider, so I was stuck w/ them. But aside from that, I just watch the people I listed above who have their own podcasts and so on, so I no longer follow mainstream news

        You do stand out in that you’re one of the people who’s cut the cord. Most boomers I’ve met still get their news from either cable, or even worse, terrestrial networks. I’ve done surveys wherever I could about what is the primary source of news for people, and overwhelmingly, it’s social media

        • Renumber the old days dial up to your Internet provider? Mine was Prodigy.Internet. Sometime I would dial up and get a busy signal. Most;y in the high traffic areas and times of 5 pm to 9 pm, depending. I learned to avoid those times. Yep, back then the phone was a part of it all. Lol..

          I have trained as many as i could and I will continue doing that for free as long as I am here. After that, I will have to leave it up to you my friend, for all of our futures, if you dont mind.

        • Speaking of Dialup, when I lived in the Bay Area, I was longing for broadband Internet. Comcast was just starting delivering that in a few selected areas in the Bay Area, and I lamented that I didn’t fall in their geography. But over time, they grew, and then morphed into NBC, and today, they are a company I can’t stand

          Dialup was okay then for email and some simple web browsing, but would have been totally unequal to the loads of YouTube or even Twitter

          It was great for downloading Wallpapers Screensavers and Icon packages. I used to download music from someones personal website. I would select three songs and start the download at midnight when everyone in my area was asleep. I would wake up in the morning and the download was almost done. Oh boy! It was especially hard to get on the Internet in the evening as that was when everyone who had a connection was on line. I would occasionally get a busy signal when trying to connect and my area was ahead of the game regarding the Internet. Those were the days. /s

        The mainstream media was not nearly as far left in 1993 as it is now. Now, it’s mostly propaganda for the DNC.

        Luckily, due to the Internet, we can now access conservative fact-based websites like Jihad Watch.

        If the Internet did not exist in 2024, there would be almost no access to conservative journalism.

        • I was never a big TV watcher James but I do remember switching channels and the news people would be doing the same story using the same script at about the exact same time. Cable TV had only been around in my area for a few years and when you browsed the channels it was like a black hole. You could almost hear the silence.

  5. What? The Canadian CBC news has a “Race & Culture Unit”! Incredible that a country where its major cities like Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver are flooded with faux “refugees”, “international students” and “foreign workers” (1.3 million migrants this year alone!) who are responsible for the Cities’ unsustainable Housing & Health infrastructures that are crumbling…has such a discriminatory to Canadians unit!

    Their polls clearly show that that the tide is turning and 65% of Canadians now feel that they have “too much immigration”. Took them time to find out that Islamists are getting a foothold in the country.

    The CBC will be justifiably defunded once Poilievre becomes Canada’s PM. Its tolerance and bias have promoted anti-Semitism and Christianophobia – and now Hinduphobia with the outrageous removal of Indian officials to satisfy the terrorist Sikh community that runs the country,

    With the recent shooting of a Jewish Girls’ School in Toronto, what else are the Liberals and NDP “wokes” willing to tolerate by the flag waving terrorist supporters?

    And it looks as if the “wokes” are following Hitler’s example.
