Steve Scalise is the House Majority Leader, which makes him one of the most powerful men in the American government. And he is not happy with a number of American universities, including Harvard, Columbia, and the University of Pennsylvania, that in his view have failed to address the antisemitism that is now rampant on their campuses. He has now been talking about removing official accreditation from these schools, which would have an impact on their ability to receive federal funds. US House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) cautioned Harvard University and other elite institutions of higher education that their official accreditation could be in jeopardy if they did not do more to combat surging antisemitism on their campuses.
“Your accreditation is on the line,” Scalise said last week in a meeting in Washington, DC with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), an influential pro-Israel lobbying organization, according to recordings acquired by The Guardian and reported on Wednesday. “You’re not playing games any more or else you’re not a school any more.”
Scalise reportedly singled out Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, and Columbia University, all of which have come under scrutiny for not doing more to combat increasing antisemitic incidents and rampant anti-Israel demonstrations since Hamas’s massacre across southern Israel last Oct. 7. The lawmaker’s threat could potentially saddle the embattled Ivy League institutions with another crisis as they grapple with simmering antisemitism controversies….
Harvard isn’t the only university at risk of having its accreditation threatened by Republican lawmakers. Columbia and the University of Pennsylvania are among those that could face funding cuts over their response to anti-Israel campus protests, which have included threats of violence against Jewish students.
Now Harvard and other schools that in the judgement of Congress have not done enough to combat antisemitism on their campuses will discover that their accreditation, and their federal funding, are both imperiled. As House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, as well as Representatives Elise Stefanik and Virginia Foxx, have made clear, these universities that have behaved as if they are answerable to no one, are about to discover a world of woe. I am very pleased to hear that universities—which have received millions of dollars in unreported donations from Qatar, etc.—will be held accountable for the virulent antisemitism on their campuses. This violation of student rights is outrageous and destructive. I believe these universities are creating students who have no appreciation or understanding of history or the legal framework of our society.

Third, this is a very clear reminder that the former President, William Howard Taft, in a speech, rightly and wisely, declared, “Anti-Semitism is a noxious weed that should be cut out. It has no place in America.”

The fees alone should be enough to dissuade any sensible parent from sending their kids to such schools. Instead, go for community colleges, or if the kid has a specific interest, the relevant certification courses. Oh, and cut down on the F1 visas in a big way, so that the universities start shutting down on their own

I would say, if accreditation is lost, refunds should be given to current students.
Shouldn’t affect holders of diplomas that were issued when the school was accredited.

A lot of federal money is given to Universities for the support of science research. This comes from the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, etc. . There is no reason the funding and the laboratories have to be situated in or under the aegis of Universities where racism, racist anti Semitism and bigotry have a hold on the students, administration or both. Maybe it is time to have these monies directed to other institutions which will have the opportunity to build solid science reputations.

They threaten to disinvest disassossociate and bar academic relationships with Israel and supporters of Israel. They’ve created a hostile learning environment for Jewish, Israeli, students and supporters of Israel. The words higher and education are oxymorons at these schools. They don’t believe your threats and if they do they see it as a positive whereby hostile foreign governments and organizations will pick up the shortfall. A must is to deport foreign students supporting terrorist organizations, expel without refund students demonstrating for terrorist gangs and arrest them as foreign agents.
