Why Tucker’s Historian Hates Churchill

The not-so-hidden subtext.

No one really knows why Tucker Carlson featured historian/fabulist Darryl Cooper on his podcast, but one thing is clear: Cooper wasn’t there to talk history. His historical points were all made in order to support present-day political positions. Even his demonization of Winston Churchill served this purpose: it was meant to change people’s minds not so much about World War II, but about the Israel-Hamas conflict.

This first became obvious in Cooper’s wildly tendentious summation of the early years of World War II. He said: “If you go to 1939, when the Germans and the Soviet Union invade Poland, as soon as that war’s wrapped up on the German side, Hitler starts firing off peace proposals to Britain, France, because they had already declared war. He didn’t expect them to declare war, actually. There’s a famous scene where he throws a fit when he finds out that they did do that. And so he doesn’t want to fight France, he doesn’t want to fight Britain.” The poor misunderstood guy! He threw a fit for peace!

And then, in the Fall of 1940, having conquered most of Europe, “Adolf Hitler is firing off radio broadcasts, giving speeches, literally sending planes over to drop leaflets over London and other British cities, trying to get the message to these people that Germany does not want to fight you.” Yet this was not as magnanimous as Cooper would have us believe.

Tucker’s historian doesn’t explain that Hitler’s peace proposals hinged upon the British accepting German hegemony over Europe. They would not and could not do this, as they had been committed since long before Hitler came to power to preventing a single power from dominating Europe. This was a matter of self-preservation, as they saw that a Germany that stretched from Spain to Moscow could easily cross the English Channel and destroy Britain as a free society. Churchill also knew that Hitler had broken the Munich agreement, his pact with the Soviet Union, and other agreements, and thus could not be trusted to keep to the terms of any peace accord.

Darryl Cooper, however, doesn’t just dislike Churchill because he rejected Hitler’s peace overtures. “The reason I resent Churchill so much for it is that he kept this war going when he had no way. He had no way to go back and fight this war.” Obviously he did have a way, as he ultimately won the war and Hitler lost it. Cooper, however, suggests that Churchill kept going at the behest of those who were lining his pockets. Churchill, in Cooper’s telling, was not just a warmonger; he was some kind of nut: 

I read about Churchill and he strikes me as a psychopath, but he’s also a sort of — I mean, he was a drunk. He was very childish in strange ways. People would talk about how as an adult, as prime minister, they’d find him in his room and he’s playing with action figures like war toys and army men and stuff, would get mad when people would interrupt him when he was doing this. This is a strange fellow. There’s all those things.

Even worse, Cooper’s drunk manchild Churchill is only interested in taking courses of action that line his pockets:

But then you get into, why was Winston Churchill such a dedicated booster of Zionism from early on in his life? And there’s ideological reasons….But then as time goes on, you read stories about, about Churchill going bankrupt and needing money, getting bailed out by people who shared his interests in terms of Zionism, but also his hostility, I think his hostility, to put it this way, I think his hostility to Germany was real. I don’t think that he necessarily had to be bribed to have that feeling. But I think he was, to an extent, put in place by people, the financiers, by a media complex that wanted to make sure that he was the guy who was representing Britain in that conflict for a reason.

There it is. The Jews put Churchill in power! This echoes Hitler’s own rhetoric. Even as Germany lay in ruins and Hitler was preparing to commit suicide on April 29, 1945, he still blamed the Jews: “If the nations of Europe are once more to be treated only as collections of stocks and shares of these international conspirators in money and finance, then those who carry the real guilt for the murderous struggle, this people will also be held responsible: the Jews!”

Why would Cooper think it important at this late date, over eighty years after World War II began, to dredge up old National Socialist rhetoric about how the Jews were responsible for it? Because of the conflict in Gaza. Cooper makes numerous disparaging references to the “Zionists,” and states that the Israelis are committing genocide in Gaza: “I argue with my Zionist interlocutors about this all the time with regard to the current war in Gaza. Look, man, maybe you, as the Germans, you felt like you had to invade to the east….Maybe you thought you had to do that, but at the end of the day, you launched that war with no plan to care for the millions and millions of civilians and prisoners of war that were going to come under your control, and millions of people died because of that.”

This is false. After studying Israel’s actions in Gaza, British Colonel Richard Kemp has called the IDF “the most moral army in the world.” But in saying this, Cooper makes his point obvious: in his view, the Zionists, just as they did in World War II, are forcing a war upon a reluctant foe and refusing all overtures for peace. Genocide is the result.

Cooper’s lengthy interview with Tucker Carlson is one long advertisement for the ceasefire in Gaza that would be tantamount to Israel surrendering and accepting defeat, and Hamas surviving to murder more Israeli civilians on another day. It’s not Winston Churchill that Cooper really wants you to hate; it’s Benjamin Netanyahu.

  1. This Darryl Cooper cannot be even referred to as an historian. Can he be so stupid to make the outrageous comments on the Holocaust, Churchill, and Hitler? No one is that stupid. He cannot come out and say he is a Nazi and wished the Jews were exterminated so he uses his so called ( fake) historian identity to make the case for Hitler and tries to white wash the Holocaust away.

    Does this totally phony historian even know about the the Wannsee Conference in Jan. 1942 when senior government officials of Nazi Germany and the SS lead by Reinhard Heydrich met and discussed how to accomplish the Final Solution to the “Jewish Question”, whereby most of the Jews of German-occupied Europe would be transferred to Poland and murdered. Heydrich outlined how European Jews would be rounded up and sent to extermination camps in Poland, where they would be killed. Copies of the Minutes of this infamous meeting were prepared and sent to Nazi persons who needed to know the decisions reached at the conference. Most of these copies were destroyed at the end of the war as participants and other officials sought to cover their tracks. It was not until 1947 that the Martin Luther’s copy (the Under Secretary at the Foreign Office) (copy number 16 out of 30 copies prepared) was found by Robert Kempner, a U.S. prosecutor in the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg, in files that had been seized from the German Foreign Office.

    Cooper is not necessarily a stupid man, although he must believe that many of us are to believe his absurd theories. Certainly Tucker Carson has certified his ignorance.Cooper is an evil person who is still committed to the Nazi cause which is now the cause of Hamas and the Palestinian “Resistance” pledged to the destruction of Israel. And Hamas’ cause is now Cooper’s cause.

    Fine article. One point: not sure i’d consider the egregious Darryl Cooper to be a historian, though. “Fabulist” fits him better.

    And he’s not th only one–claims that Winston Churchill–somehow–forced Hitler to invade most of Europe and commit genocide against the Jews are not uncommon online.

    The only question is why the formerly pretty sane Tucker Carlson is falling for this vicious claptrap.

  3. That Trump, Vance, and Kennedy won’t renounce Carlson’s blatant antisemitism harms Jews and Israel. We have to choose between Hamas and nazi lovers.

    • There are Jew-haters on both sides. Trump has a smaller number of them, and at least he doesn’t say they have a point, the way Kamala Hamas and Walz do. Of course, the latter would lose a lot more voters if they didn’t support Jew-haters, but I think they also don’t like Jews that stand up for themselves.
      Trump should reject his Jew-hating supporters, but at least he isn’t supporting their Jew-hatred the way the Democrats are.

    • I don’t think that people who are friends w/ Tucker, be it Trump, Vance, Ramaswamy, Tulsi, Kennedy, et al owe anyone an explanation for what Tucker did. Tucker does! For picking such a moment to feature him, providing ammo to Dems who are otherwise on the defensive for their party’s treatment of Israel and also American Jewish students

      Even if I accept that Tucker is a Nazi lover, I don’t buy that his friends are. Except of course Candace Owens. That said, previously I was hoping for him to get a cabinet role, such as Secretary of State. Not any more

      Neither Israel nor American Jews are harmed by the Trump/Vance ticket. If they get elected, the Abraham Accords would probably add some more Arab countries in Israel’s neighborhood. Also, if pro-Pali students on F visas are deported, it will make schools a lot safer for Jewish students. Neither of these will happen if Kamala wins

        • The idea that all White Anglo-Saxon Protestants are antisemitic is mistaken. That is my background, as well (save for the assumed wealth).

        • His descent is Swedish, not Anglo-Saxon. Even if he did belong to the Episcopalian Church, before abandoning it for its endorsement of open borders

    • Trump, Vance and Kennedy, are not responsible for who Carlson interviews .Did anyone in Trumps camp praise or agree with crackpot Cooper has to say? If either Trump ,Vance ,or Kennedy even give attention to Cooper ,even if they condemn what he says the left will spin it remember Charlottesville lie that Trump is fighting against after he condemned white supremist ,he is still fighting that lie to this day .Better to let it die with only Carlson’s poor judgement in doing an interview with someone who who would be conformable with Hitler taking over all Europe .The left is still trying connect Trump to project 25 a study done by the Heritage Foundation that Trump has nothing to do with.. Why get muddled the waters and give air ,coverage ,to this nutter who calls himself a “historian “.The election is too close to bring another idiot and connect him in anyway to Trump in either a negative or positive light .It is not Trump or his close aids or advisors job to chase down and comment on every interview ,opinion ,or rabbling crap that flows over the internet .Only because Carlson has said good or positives things about Trump in the past why give air to this stupid interview he has done in the last 2 weeks with this idiot Cooper.? Nothing positive can come with Trump saying anything about it.

  4. Cooper is an utter fool, demonstrative in microcosm of how a little knowledge is a bad thing.

    But here I will reference A.J.P. Taylor, a life-long liberal and an inveterate opponent of Winston Churchill’s political philosophy. Taylor was the author of the final volume of the 15 volume Oxford History of England. On page 4 of that volume when first mentioning Churchill he had a footnote on that page and I will record it in its entirety (and it is important to read it to the end). Here it is word for word: Winston Spencer Churchill (1874-1965), grandson of Duke of Marlborough and of American tycoon, Jerome: educated Harrow and Sandhurst; first lord of the admiralty, 1912-15; chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, 1915; commanded a battalion in France, 1915-1916; minister of munitions, 1917-1918; secretary for war (and air), 1918-1921; supported Lloyd George on breakup of Coalition and defeated at Dundee, 1922; Conservative M.P. for Woodford, 1924-1964; chancellor of the exchequer 1924-1929; left Conservative shadow cabinet and opposed concessions to India, 1931; supported Edward VIII at time of abdication, 1936; first lord of the admiralty and member of war cabinet 1939-1940; Prime Minister of National government and minister of defence, 1940-1945; leader of Conservative party, 1940-1954; Conservative Prime Minister 1945, 1951-1955; K.G., 1953; the saviour of his country.

    Take that, Cooper, you silly revisionist. QED.

  5. I tend to agree with Patrick J.Buchanan and Neill Ferguson that Britain could have lived with a German victory in World War One, and that Britain should have remained neutral in that war. Kaiser Wilhelm was Queen Victoria’s eldest grandson, and had no desire to invade or conquer Britain.

      • Well, America should have remained neutral too later on, but Britain shouldn’t have entered it in 1914 ostensibly to rescue Belgium.

        It was the entry of Britain and its colonies, plus the resulting entry of the United States, Italy and Japan, which turned it into a World War.

        At first, it was essentially a dispute involving Germany, France and Russia (Austria-Hungary was allied with Germany, and the Serbians were allied with Russia).

    • The Kaiser did indeed develop a personal animus against Great Britain, which showed itself first in his eventual hatred for his English mother, Vicky, the eldest child of Queen Victoria. The Kaiser is repeatedly heard to say he wants to “expunge his English blood”.
      But Wilhelm was a very damaged, mixed up guy as a result of his traumatic birth & the resulting torture inflicted on him to “correct” his withered arm.
      His relatives in the British Royal Family found his tempestuous resentments impossible to handle.
      At Windsor Queen Alexandra reached into her bag for a box of cough drops, offering one to Wilhelm saying, “Try one of these ! They might calm your brain !”
      “Oh ? Do you think my brain needs calming ?” replied Wilhelm.
      “I most certainly do !” said Queen Alexandra.

  7. The twisted and tortured logic some people resort to argue their ridiculous assumptions.
    I think of the babies cooked alive in their parent’s ovens and am quite sure, as the Brits who fought the Nazis, what the Israelis are up against.
