Israel is determined to force Hezbollah to end its rocket barrages on the Galilee. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric is outraged: “Netanyahu firm on new phase of Hezbollah war as UN warns of catastrophe,” by Tovah Lazaroff, Jerusalem Post, September 20, 2024:
“We are very concerned at the heightened escalation across the blue line, including the deadly strike we saw in Beirut today,” Dujarric told reporters.
“We urge all parties to de-escalate immediately. All must exercise maximum restraint. We also urge the parties to immediately return to the cessation of hostilities and to fully implement [UN] Security Council Resolution 1701 the region is on the brink of a catastrophe.
“All efforts should be made to spare in urgently pursuing a diplomatic activity. All efforts should focus on urgently finding a diplomatic activity,” Dujarric stated.
Why should UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, be “very concerned” about a strike that took out an arch-terrorist responsible not just for the deaths of Israelis, but also for the killings of 240 U.S. Marines and 58 French paratroopers in their Beirut barracks in 1983? Shouldn’t his death be cause for celebration? And why did Dujarric refer blandly to a “return to a cessation of hostilities,” when it is Hezbollah that ought to have been singled out? Since October 8, 2023, it has been launching daily barrages of rockets and drones at civilian centers in Israel. Or does he want a “cessation of hostilities” precisely now, after the Mossad and IDF have so successfully been undermining Hezbollah’s ability to communicate with its members, destroyed a large number of rockets being readied for launch against Israel, and killed an arch-terrorist, in order to rescue Hezbollah from any further crushing blows by the IDF?
Diplomatic activity over the war in Gaza has been running on empty since last November, when the first — and last — hostages-for-prisoners swap with Hamas took place. A “cessation of hostilities” between Israel and Hezbollah now would prevent Israel from what it is clearly preparing to do — deliver such a military blow to Hezbollah that it will finally stop lobbing rockets and drones into the Galilee, and allow 60,000 Israelis to return to their homes in the north.
UN political affairs chief Rosemary DiCarlo warned the Security Council that if violence continues between Israel, Palestinian terror group Hamas and Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah, then “we risk seeing a conflagration that could dwarf even the devastation and suffering witnessed so far.”
Or perhaps she has it exactly wrong. Perhaps Hezbollah will be so discombobulated and made fearful by the latest exploits of both Mossad and IDF that it will want to avoid a “conflagration” and will sensibly choose both to withdraw its forces, as Israel demands, north of the Litani River, and to end its barrages of rockets into northern Israel.
What the UN officials, consumed with anti-Israel animus, really fear is not a “conflagration,” but the possibility of an Israeli victory that will end with the dismantling of Hamas in Gaza and the retreat of a weakened and humiliated Hezbollah, no longer daring to launch rockets at Israel.
UN human right chief Volker Turk said it was “difficult to conceive how, in these circumstances, such attacks could possibly conform with the key principles of distinction, proportionality, and precautions in attack, under international humanitarian law.”
Turk called for an independent, thorough and transparent investigation and for those who ordered and carried out the attacks to be held to account….
Volker Turk has never suggested investigating Hezbollah for the nearly 8,000 rockets it has hurled into civilian areas of Israel since October 8. Apparently it is only Israel that needs to be the object of an “independent, thorough, and transparent investigation,” though Israel has shown itself quite willing to meticulously investigate every claim made against the IDF of possible wrongdoing.
Turk fails to acknowledge the tremendous efforts the IDF makes to minimize civilian casualties. It does this through an elaborate system of warning civilians to leave areas and buildings that are about to be targeted. Furthermore, Israeli pilots frequently abort missions if they detect too many civilians near the intended target far below. As for warnings, already by March, the IDF had dropped nine million leaflets, sent fifteen million text messages, and made sixteen million robocalls to warn people in Gaza of impending attacks. No wonder British Colonel Richard Kemp has described the IDF as “the most moral army in the world,” and West Point Professor John Spencer, who has studied the Gaza war up close, concludes that “Israel has implemented more measures to prevent civilian casualties in urban warfare than any other military in the history of war.”
What Antonio Guterres, Volker Turk, Rosemary Di Carlo and other UN apparatchiks fear is not a bigger war, despite all their scare-talk about a “regional conflagration,” but an Israeli victory over its enemies in both Gaza and Lebanon; that would be, for them, another example of Israel’s flouting of the UN’s kangaroo-court proceedings against the embattled Jewish state, and hence intolerable.

If Israel fired 150 rockets toward Lebanon, what would the turk say? Probably be screaming about it not being distinct because they would be trying to miss the Lebanese citizens and target hezbollah and the terror group is who the turk wants to protect.
He might even say it was not proportional because the rockets would be more precise and do a better job.

Hugh Fitzgerald has hit the nail on its head. What the UN is most worried about is an Israeli victory in Lebanon. And it cannot “sell” Israel the deal that the US forced down Israel’s throat in the last war with Hezbollah, the one that stopped an Israeli parachuted force behind the Litani river and put Hezbollah in a situation with an Israeli army in front of them and another behind them. The UN “promised” to install a UN military force “UNIFIL” with the express purpose of disarming all militias including Hezbollah. Instead UNIFIL was chased out of Lebanese towns by armies of women banking pots and pans. A total failure. So Israel is not leaving anything up to the UN this time. My advice to UN is to convince Hezbollah to depart for …..Syria where they will be more or less safe. And carry your missiles with you. Hezbollah is at this moment not in control of itself. The loss of key personnel together with the inability to talk to each other using cell phones, pages, etc., leaves them with a bleak immediate future of fighting Israel on the ground in Lebanon. If there was ever a time to “kill” Hezbollah, this is it. I doubt the Military and political brains in Israel will miss this opportunity.

There are 57 Muslim countries in the UN. Hardly any are democracies, some have radical Islamists running them such as Erdogan in Turkey and there are Imans calling for a world wide Caliphate.
